Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]

Netflix- Limited Series "Exposed: The Ghost Train Fire". A true story from 1979 based on a fatal fire in the amusement park below the Sydney Harbor bridge. Horrific tragedy whose investigation is fast tracked and an national inquiry convened where none of the actual witnesses are called to testify. For fans of Ozzie crime series like Underbelly, it is no coincidence that the storyline goes through many of the same locations.

I liked the HBO limited series of David Beckhem. Pretty amazing talent on the pitch and pretty impressive in the business world as well, particularly for a guy without a "Posh" English secondary education. As for his wife, Posh...well she was more likable than I figured she would be and they appear to have a pretty solid relationship, which is not the norm in many celebrity marriages. Thumbs up for this well done series.

Another Oz production, Secret City on Netflix. Five Eyes, international intrigue, Bad good guys, Good bad guys. One storyline, 2 seasons of 6 episodes each. One of my genres. If you watched other Oz series (Rake) you may recognize some of the actors.
Recommend CC just to help with the Oz lingo but not hard to follow without.

Never liked "Dream Weaver" by the recently passed Gary Wright, but I thought this song from 9 1/2 Weeks was a much better song. This clip shows the (then) handsome Mickey Rouke and the fetching Kim Bassinger in a movie considered risqué by 1981 standards but really pretty tame in todays Fifty Shades world.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?

If war movies are in your genre, I caught a pretty good one on Prime called "Danger Close". Vietnam forward base manned by Aussies and New Zealanders is coming under attack. 170 fighting soldiers go out beyond the wire to disrupt the nightly attacks but unknown to them and the whole chain of command, 2 battalions of Chinese fighters numbering about 2000 men are closing in from 2 different directions to overrun the base.
Based on a true story the movie does a good job of showing the importance of communication in battle and some top down command structure sometimes flawed decision making.
Unless you are proficient in Aussie speak, this was a movie where subtitles come in handy. Fairly gory so not a date night movie!

Re: Expense "trackers"- How would you classify?

I've been tracking our income and expenses for years. I only count an expense when I spend money on something. If I'm transferring funds from a savings to a checking, or from an investment account to checking, that's not an expense. It's only an expense when the money is no longer in my asset column, because I have purchased something with it, or given it as a gift. Thanks all! I’ve landed on the majority opinion upthread. It’s not an expense until it is spent. I’ll keep tracking our contributions toward self funding DW SS but keep this data on my distributions spreadsheet instead of expenses. I’m just looking out for any blind spots now that actually funding a hopefully long retirement is happening. Ducumulation anxiety will be cured with...

Re: Retirement / COBRA / Medicare

Why complicate your life? Is your work that terrible to not last another 2 months? Retire in February and enjoy the transition to Medicare on March 1, 2024. It will save you time and effort to changing to COBRA or ACA and then to Medicare - less chances of medical billing issues & prescription delays. Your doctors will appreciate it too. FYI- DW turns 65 next month. Her last day was May 30. Medicare always starts on the first day on month you turn 65. No medical claims or prescriptions since retiring. It took 3 weeks for COBRA paperwork to arrive and then she has 45 days to sign. She has not yet signed so risk tolerance in play and Medicare starts August 1. We did use a Medicare insurance agent to enroll in Medicare so we know she is a...

Re: Expense "trackers"- How would you classify?

simply moving money from one account to another is a transfer, not an expense. I agree…however, as we have ended “earned income” on June 1 and are self funding the gap between inflow and outgoing, sort of feels like an expense. The psychological transition after 40 years of accumulation to decumulation is likely in play here. Can you walk through an example of the accounting? Ah…… If you sell $1000 in your IRA and put that in your checking account, that is a transfer. Like moving money from your left pocket to your right pocket. When you the go to target and write a check for beef jerky, that’s an expense. (I categorize that under groceries). I get it, I was hoping the OP could go through the exercise. Thank you for the discussion. I guess ...

Expense "trackers"- How would you classify?

We have done expense tracking for the last 3 years on an excel spreadsheet and while we don't itemize all expenses, we think we have good estimates for groceries etc. This is the year of transition for us as DW went part time in January and retired June 1. Her SSA estimates are higher than mine so we have done the calcs on taking hers at 65 next month, waiting until her FRA (66/8 mo) or waiting until 70. So we have decided to wait and essentially "self fund" a monthly "Income" stream similar to what her SS would be by tapping our retirement funds. My question is should this monthly draw down from assets, that will go toward regular monthly expenses be considered a recurring expense?- one that will go away at some point o...

"The Days," on Netflix. Based upon the historical recounting of the March 2011 meltdown of Japan's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Dubbed in English. Eight episodes. We were in Japan when this disaster happened and needed to do our own disaster response, so we found the series fascinating. Not sure whether one who did not have that experience or interest in disaster response would feel the same way. Just finished and agree the series fascinating. However, I have enjoyed visiting Japan a few times and was working in the Business Continuity space when this event occurred. I even had a 45 minute PowerPoint slide deck we delivered to other critical business response types. The title was along the lines of "... What if the...

Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]

Just finished "Dave" and I am certainly not in the demographic. Lot's of talent passes through this show, on both sides of the camera. I have not come across a series like this that I both liked and disliked. The writing I found very witty and many of the characters likeable...I'm no prude but some of the scripting was down right "vulger" to use a phrase my grandmother would have used. I kind of kept a mental checklist of the things I liked and another column of things I didn't. In the end, I liked more things than I didn't...but I wouldn't watch it with my wife! I did like the fact that it looks like they rotated Directors nearly every episode. Keeping that storyline together and coherent must have been a big challenge....

"Working Man" on Prime is a sad little movie about the closing of the last factory in a Rust Belt town that once had 5 major employers, but I am glad I watched it. It devolves into a metal health crisis and it's hard not to have empathy for the characters. It ended up in a place I hadn't considered about halfway through it. Not a date night movie but it is worth watching.

"War Sailor" on Netflix, a limited series, subtitled from Norwegian. Stories that take place during war time is one of my favorite genre's and I liked this a lot, but it can be a bit of a rough ride for some- there were some intense scenes that I just wanted to be over.
It would actually pair pretty well with "The Bombardment" in both tone and seriousness.

"Floridaman" on Netflix is a short limited series. Decent portrayal of the son of a Philly mobster who "inherits" his fathers crime operations as opposed to earning them. Sends one of his gambling deadbeats down to Florida to find his GF who ran off and disappeared. I grew up near Philly and can attest I've met tough girls like her before. Lots of family drama and odd characters.

OK, now for something fun about sending your child off to be a Freshman. As parents you may be invited to a "parent orientation" a few weeks before dropping off. My wife and I went around the campus on this visit and took "happy" pictures of us at various campus landmarks. This was pre-selfie so we would mail her an encouraging "Proud of you" "Knock their socks off"... "Don't forget to be Awesome" letter with a random campus photo of us they had never seen before. DD said she loved finding an actual physical letter and on campus picture of us, even though she was in constant email contact.

Oh, and your son will NEVER come home to visit on holidays without bringing every piece of clothing you sent with them, dirty. Get them a good laundry bag or two for that to occur without the use of garbage bags!
My oldest DD called Mom in November of her freshman year and said "...I guess I'm officially in college now. I had to wear my swimsuit bottoms for underwear to class today."
It will be one of my life great pleasures watching her send her now teen daughter off to college.

When my girls were in college I was in an industry that involved "preparedness". I gave each of my kids $200 in singles, $5's and $10's that I vacuum sealed with explicit instructions that this was an emergency fund to only be used for a serious emergency like ATM's were down. I didn't find out until daughter 2 graduated college that DD 2 called DD 1 to ask "What's up with this cash Dad gave me for an emergency fund?". DD1 advised her "... Oh just spend it...my emergency was needing to pay for a pizza delivery at 2AM one night." They kept it a secret from me until I caught them "having a laugh" at my expense!

Re: Best Funeral you ever attended?

The best funeral i ever attended was my grandfather's. He left detailed instructions including what music was to be played... Chopin did the same. His funeral in 1849 was quite the extravaganza. Chopin had asked that Mozart's Requiem be performed, and that Pauline Viardot be a soloist. This required a special exception from the Archbishop of Paris because women were not allowed to sing in Catholic churches at the time. The event was attended by over 3000 people, and was paid for by Chopin's patron and piano student, Scotswoman Jane Stirling, at a cost of £5000 (£509,000 in today's currency per the Bank of England inflation calculator). I think a funeral should not create a burden for those who survive the deceased. (To be clear, I'm not su...

Bookmarked “The Broker Upperers” on Netflix and saved it for when I wanted some comedy. From the trailer, it’s easy to identify this movie as quirky and it does deliver on that point! Is is a bit vulgar and maybe sophomoric but DW had some laugh out loud moments and you have to be more than vulgar to get a laugh out of her. New Zealand humor is even different from Aussie humor. I will suggest it but it’s not everyone’s humor.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?

"The Bang Bang Club" on Prime Video. Based on a true story, it follows the violent years in South Africa from 1990 to 1994 when apartheid was ending.
Storyline develops around a group of both paid and free agent war photographers who take the photos that often go world wide that accompany the hard to comprehend stories being written by the newspaper reporters who write from the relative safety of a newspaper building.
This is not a feel good, rom com, date night movie. It is violent but the violence is a big part of the plot. It appealed to me as I have been to SA and also like photography... plenty of camera gear talk. It would also appeal to anyone who enjoys Newsroom story lines.

"Fugitive Pieces" on Prime Video. An emotional movie that follows a young orphaned Polish Jew through his survival during WWII through to his adulthood where becomes a writer yet still struggles with his social skills and complicated concept of self worth.
Based on a novel. I enjoyed it.

Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]

Down to the last few episodes of The Sinner . I like it, my wife only watched the first season. RM Finished season four last weekend and enjoyed all four. Sorry to see it end. Not your typical police “who done it”. The psychological elements make it really intriguing. Highly recommended. This is definitely next for us. The first three seasons were really good. Good to hear a confirm on the later seasons of "The Sinner". I had heard negative things about season 3. Anyway, it's next on the docket. We've now watched the first 2 episodes. I'm intrigued. I have a few guesses about what happened; we'll see if I am right. Can anyone tell me which streaming service this is on? I'm only finding it on a "pay more" app.

Not sure what is meant by "...gets out of hand," as this limited series was released as a "Netflix Original" in Germany in July and mentions him in the "purely fictional" plotline a number of times and I think includes a bit role for his mother. I'm not in the Twitter demographic, but the creators chose to use a screengrab of a tweet using his name and image that is the only mention of the title of the series. What am I missing?

Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]

"King of Stonks" on Netflix. I am solo binging this one as I'm pretty certain DW wouldn't like the vulgarity and "guy" humor. It's got a pretty fast moving storyline that somewhat resembles an actual scandal that took place in Germany. Some pretty wild character development and tech startup humor that is too spot on to NOT be based on someone's reality. Surprisingly good dubbing to English... I usually prefer to listen to original language and read subtitles, but in this case I went with the dubbing.
No Idea what "Stonks" means- lost in translation for me.
