Regular guy daily rower here.
Had something come up where I couldn't row for a month.
First day back, rowing was not recommended, so I took it real easy.
I told myself - just go through the motions, slow as molasses and with the best form you can muster.
Straight back, shoulders down, use legs primarily and focus on efficient energy transfer - solid shoulders, hand grip, finish leg extension.
I was stunned to see a huge jump in the 2000m time over my usual without breaking a sweat.
Not really qualified to speak, but for me, attention to form made me wonder what kind of sloppy rowing I'd been doing for a few years!

I'm barely a photographer and you've probably done this, but I'd make sure your white balance is not set on some wacky custom setting and your exposure compensation isn't set for slight overexposure (+1/3 or +2/3).
Sometimes if I'm trying to juice up a photo, I'll change the white balance to cloudy, which brings out the reds, and slightly underexpose (-1/3).
I also try to set a custom white balance using my palm to better represent the color, although I'm sure the pro's are aghast.
Otherwise, modern cellphones often incorporate HDR or High Dynamic Range which can really enhance an image.
Lastly, tons of magazine images out there are simply too good to be true due to post processing.

If you take the 84 to 81 route, there's a Lindt Factory Outlet in Carlisle, PA just past Harrisburg.
It's not a scratch and dent, expired gift boxes kinda place and there isn't a factory there.
What they do have is flavors on top of flavors which you can choose from and pay by the pound.
Freezing air conditioning, clean bathrooms, large parking lot, minimal people.
Handy place for a break from the road and acute chocolate deficiency treatment.

Re: Jumper cables
Just tried out the supercapacitor referenced by telemark which I REALLY wanted to work but it didn't. The problem was the power draw by the onboard electronics which hobbled the supercapacitor's ability to generate enough juice to crank the engine effectively. The particulars were a 9 year old original battery in a friend's Chrysler which had it's wipers on and fans on full blast. On the first start attempt, the dash lights flickered, the wipers crawled, and the receiver for the keyfob signal struggled mightily. The fans and interior lights coming on were the coup de grace. The starting voltage on the battery was ~4v, and had no problem getting the supercapacitor to 15.8v prior to the first attempt. I then recharged the supercapacitor to 15...

Re: replacing tires on AWD cars do you have to do all 4
Our 2005 Forester had 10k on a set of 4 when one of our tires developed a split in the sidewall when traveling (we had 190k on the vehicle). Under warranty, the tire was replaced with the same brand and model. On returning home, we asked our independent Subie mechanic whether we should have changed all four - he answered "No way!". So we kept on going for another 30k until the tires showed some dry rot and we put on a new set. So for what it's worth, in our particular instance, it worked out ok.

Re: This man can predict when bubbles burst: time to time the market?
I too was impressed by his academic credentials and his attempt to quantify crowd behavior. His analyses search for patterns of impending failure such as rocket motor vibrations and earthquakes. The formula he put forth struck me as curve fitting through the rectospectoscope, but it sure was pretty. In the end, human herd behavior is much less consistent than say frequencies of vibrating metal about to shatter given a certain temperature and so on. It would be great to have such a holy grail indicator, but so much depends on the experiential history of people with enough oomph to move the market and the degree to which contagion has become part of the zeitgeist. It's probably more of a Keynesian beauty contest than science.

Re: People with older car, share your unusual repairs
Compared to you guys above, these are piddly repairs (05 Subie Forester), but might keep bogleheads from being taken advantage of:
Engine overheating due to 200k of bugs smashed into condenser/radiator - cured by foam and pressure washing - could've been a new radiator
AC prematurely shutting off - compressor clutch disengaging - cured by removing one washer - could've been a new compressor etc.
Experienced indie mechanics are worth their weight in gold.

Re: electric pencil sharpener
OK, I love old school pencil sharpeners and a well sharpened pencil. Many of the newer ones just suck. The Boston small bread loaf sharpeners have this plastic gear that degrades and snaps in half over time. A replacement 3d printed gear can be found on Amazon for about 10 bucks. They are also on ebay. If you are ambitious, folks have posted their 3d design file and you can print your own.
I've rescued five of these from the Goodwill for a few bucks - 4 are model 18, 1 is model 19. The gear and innards are basically the same. They run like a champ afterwards - a little lube on the sharpening mechanism helps and sometimes crayon residue needs to be scraped off the sharpening blades.

Re: Microcap Stock Screener
The AAII Stock Investor Pro software might suit you. You can screen the US universe by your criteria and rank quantitatively offline. The Shadow Stock Portfolio (SSP) is the screen discussed above; mkt cap 30-400 million. The farther away from large caps, the wackier the numbers, the more prayer involved, bigger spreads etc. So screening on fundamentals and executing on technicals is what I've been kicking around. The program has simple charts with monthly bars. The other odd twist is that there is a noticeable bump in the selected stocks after portfolio additions are announced quarterly. So some are using this program to make good guesses on which stocks might be chosen prior to the announcement and sell on the bump up. I think Jason Zweig...

Re: Did everyone in the early 80s have their money in CDs?
My high school buddy and I found a computer programming gig which paid us 200 bucks each. While we were imagining all the things we could blow our new found cash on, his dad pounced on his money and locked it up in a five year CD paying a rate in the teens. 200 bucks was a boatload of money and five years seemed like forever. We were sure that his old man had robbed him of the best senior year ever!

Re: Running Linux vs Other OS?
If you'd like to test drive linux, you can put the live CD versions on a USB drive via YUMI. Booting to the USB drive will run YUMI and you can test drive whatever versions of linux you've put on the drive. I like Ubuntu Mate and Mint, but lately I've found elementary OS (Mac like) and Zorin OS (Windows 7 like) to be very elegant. I also put the Windows 10 install files on the drive via YUMI since the thrift store computers I pick up often don't have running CD/DVD ROMs and the files sometimes don't fit on a single DVD. 32 bit versions of linux are also useful for older CPUs - I have lubuntu running on an ancient Xeon and xubuntu running on an Opteron 146 (I also keep Puppy linux on an old Celeron laptop because it barks on startup). 32-bit...

Re: How do I put on these trades?
The only problem with these OSO/OCO orders is that you can lose track of them over time especially if you have a many of them cooking. Say your buy stop hits @ 12, then wanders between 12 and 14 for months or years. One day, you say "I don't want to hang on to this stock anymore, time to sell", so you sell it @ 14 (or 9). But your conditional sell order is still on, so when it gets to 15, it executes and now you're riding a short position you don't know about until you get a margin call when the price plummets.
Hopefully, your round trip commission will be less than your profit.
Bonne chance!

Our temp would run a bit high and spike in traffic - turned out it was 200k of bugs smashed into the condenser and radiator fins. I did hose it off from time to time, but never really looked closely. The mechanic used the foam and pressure washed it (inside to out) and it was amazing to practically see through it afterwards. Hope this helps.

Just in case it hasn't been mentioned, National Park Pass (all you can visit for a year) is $80. Free pass if military. $10 for a lifetime pass if over 62, and a free pass if disabled. https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm And just to toss in my 0.02c worth, what you love is often a work in progress. I loved the Grand Canyon, then I loved hiking Bright Angel to Phantom ranch (I think 1-2% of visitors get to Phantom Ranch), then I loved hiking the South Kaibab down to Phantom Ranch and then rafting the Colorado. Now I can barely stand Grand Canyon Village. FWIW, Crater Lake was gorgeous, Chaco Culture (Canyon) was holy (and there's a special crowd that goes 17 miles off road to get there to camp), Petrified Forest is amazing (and amaz...

Did this 20 years ago. FWIW it was no big deal. I was in my Hemingway Dangerous Summer/Death in the Afternoon phase at the time and everybody in Costa Rica told us that there were no bullfights. Whenever I asked about a corrida de toros, people would put two fingers over their head and ask los Toros de Chicago? (Michael Jordan was big at the time) Then we pull up to the Plaza de Toros in Guanacaste. I get all excited until an old man tells me the season ended the day before!

Dear BostonDan: Congratulations on your new baby. Sorry to hear about your parents. As medical people well versed with the fragility of life, I must admit that when misfortune darkens our family doors, it is no less a visceral punch in the gut. Many who have been touched in this way have been working in the same groove for decades, and can't see any other path. In this vein, I offer you two ideas which might help. I've run into a few colleagues who do serial fellowships. Often they are military, and get fellowships at great places since they bring their own salary. You might get your choice of fellowships this way, and could even structure fellowships the way you like, pure EP here, pure U/S there, medical informatics, specialized training ...

Re: How do you handle auto care? (for a non-DIY'er)
It can be tough to sort out the best way to go. I've had good and bad service from dealers, and generally good service from indies. If the indy shop is getting real popular, there can be a tendency for them to coast instead of hustling to earn your business. The other thing to factor in is short vs long term. If you have a beater and you just want to keep it running for a few months, then going cheap with parts might be the way to go. OTOH, if you want to keep your car long term and are looking at price primarily, then you could get some shoddy parts which will need replacing sooner and you'll end up getting dinged with more labor cost. There's also stuff which can be done super easy while the mechanic is in there prophylactically for no ad...
