Re: Bonds - Throw it all on the table!!!

In the past I have struggled with this question. How much in bonds? Which bond funds? As well as how soon do I need the money? Today we use a "simple" Wellington/ Wellesley mix. A good % of this is in tax deferred accounts. ( Also a very small % in company stock.) 60/38 with a small 2% in cash. (To...

Re: The Three-Fund Portfolio

Something not mentioned often is the dividend benefit of the 3-fund portfolio. Being semi-retired, I've changed from re-investing to having them sent to my checking account. Getting a nice sum every month and really nice sum every quarter.

Re: Does anyone hold cash?

3-months from retirement. None here. Have an equity line of credit on the house if we need money ASAP. I'll use a distribution to pay off the line of credit. Holding cash is a very old-school principle. Yea, I've read about it on bogleheads but still can't see valid reasons to hold cash instead of h...

Re: Fund Allocation & Re-Balancing and the 3-Fund Plan

Hate when this happens. I usually end up on the loosing end of the deal when I follow someone else's system. Allocation seems to be a huge gray area. 100 minus you age for stock allocation, age in bonds etc. It seems that stock/bond allocation is almost as bad as timing the market. Everyone has thei...

Fund Allocation & Re-Balancing and the 3-Fund Plan

62 here, wife is 64, 6-months from retirement. We're in the simple 3 and allocate according to our age. Started using 60-to keep the math simple but have to recalculate since we got older :happy . With VTIAX & VTSAX over 16% annual return and VBTLX at a miserable -0.92%, I'm questioning why I should...

Collecting Unemployment and making withdraws from 401K & IRA

Good Morning,
At age 61 can I collect unemployment benefits and begin withdraws from my qualified plans at the same time?? I've read that there are no restrictions because it's like withdrawing from a savings account.

Re: Why isn't the 3-fund portfolio a 4-fund portfolio?

Thanks, I can't say I've ever seen such a high turnover, but I'm not in the business. In a nut shell, what would cause a fund manager to completely re-vamp a fund like this, especially bonds? Are a bunch of bonds maturing? Is it reason for concern as a short term, 3-5yrs, or long term investor?

Re: Why isn't the 3-fund portfolio a 4-fund portfolio?

Thanks, An interesting observation is the turnover rate for the Total Bond Fund (VTABX) is 84%. The Int'l Bond Fund ( VTABX) is 13%. Heck of a difference. The stock index funds, VTSAX & VTIAX, both have 3% turnover. Is that 84% turnover reason for concern? I believe the commissions from portfolio tu...

Why isn't the 3-fund portfolio a 4-fund portfolio?

Domestic and Intentional stock indexes are covered (VTSAX & VTIAX) but only the International Bond index (VTABX) is covered. How come the domestic bond index (VTIAX) isn't included? Just curious, thanks.

12(B)1 fees and the discount broker

Dear fellow heads,
Moved everything over to Vanguard and have a fund that has high expenses and loads but is doing pretty well. What happens to the 12(b)1 fees when using a discount broker? Are they still sent to Vanguard or are they credited back to me (yea, right) Thanks folks!

Re: Tranfer IRA, liguidate assets or move in whole

Assuming Flagship is the size of the account. Looks like I may qualify. I read off about 6 MFS and Franklin funds and she said no transaction fees. You can bet your azz EJ is going to whack me for the transfer. Everything the do costs money... whichever one costs less. Vanguard charges $35/trade for...

Tranfer IRA, liguidate assets or move in whole

I'm moving my Edward Jones IRA to Vanguard. One of the questions on the Vanguard application is do I want EJ to liquidate the funds or do I want the entire account moved as is to Vanguard. I would then sell/liquidate the entire portfolio. What is the better option? Thanks folks!

Re: Edward Jones out of the 401K business leaving us hanging...

I'm getting sleep deprived reading everything. Lots to learn but I'm noticing that I'm not the only one that's lost. This industry is shrouded in a type of secrecy that is kept from being understood by normal mortals by the use of technical jargon, hidden agendas, and disclosure language that is wri...

Re: Edward Jones out of the 401K business leaving us hanging...

Thank you. Haven't quite finished the entire thread but it looks like this strategy is more conducive to folks on the "path" to retirement. We are about there. Wife goes Jan and I go in 1-1/2 years. (at 62). My long term plan is much shorter than someone in there 40's. That said, what variation of t...

Thanks Gents, That 3-fund portfolio looks interesting. How many bogleheads are following that strategy? The funds recommended are: Vanguard Prime Money Market Fund VMMXX Vanguard Total Bond Market Index (Admiral Shares) VBTL Vanguard 500 Index (Admiral Shares) VFIAX Vanguard Extended Market Index (A...

Re: Edward Jones out of the 401K business leaving us hanging...

Forgot to mention. Since the wife and I are over 59-1/2, we are rolling over $425K from our 401K to existing IRA's. Hoping this will reduce costs and see no reason to keep it in the 401K Plan. Is this our best option? Thanks Folks!!

Edward Jones out of the 401K business leaving us hanging...

End of March our adviser drops this news that we need to transfer our assets out of 401K plan by July 1. Really can't get a straight answer from him about what's going on and the TPA, Benetech, isn't offering much info either. Advisor wants us to convert to John Hancock with EJ as an adviser. Been r...

Re: Vanguard VS E. Jones

New member here. I own a family run business, 3-people - Me, wife, and Son. We have a 401K Safe Harbor plan, about $700K in assets, with EJ and we've been notified they're getting out of the 401K business and we need to transfer our assets. For the past 30-days I've been reviewing our portfolio and ...
