Re: Anyone have Treasury Direct [mess up] your account? Lose $1000!
I've had multiple bad incidents with TD, the most recent being that they locked my account and it could only be unlocked by my wife calling and waiting on hold an hour during the times when she was working. We are done; we cashed our I-bonds and if we need TIPS or Treasuries, we will just do it through Vanguard.

Re: What's The Latest On Tap, Swipe, Or Insert?
Who cares about credit card security anymore? Every couple years I get a text about my card being used in some other country, I call the number on the card, and in ten minutes there is a new card being fedexed to my house, while all my subscriptions update automatically. I have never once given any thought to whether one way to use the card is more secure than another. +1 Way too many people take it as it's their responsibility to monitor their card use second by second. Not me. I'm not doing their work for them. I haven't discovered a not-me charge in years. I've seen where card's computer finds the fraud, but none recently. I never use my ATM card for a purchase, but DW occasionally does at the supermarket when she needs some cash back. ...

Re: Frankfurt: 18+ hr overnight layover
Lufthansa's delays caused me to miss a connection in FRA and they gave me a voucher to spend the night at a hotel (Moxy) in Gateway Gardens. Apparently their only clientele at the time was missed connections. I had one of the worst meals I'd ever had at that hotel and by time I got home I had developed Covid. I can't blame that on Lufthansa/Frankfurt/Crappy Hotel, but I'm going to. 0/10 would not Frankfurt again. Essen/Dusseldorf was still great that year though. In 2015, the wife and I did a Germany tour starting in Frankfurt that was delightful, although it didn't spend much time in Frankfurt. One of the best parts was that the downtown hotel we were in started to close off traffic in front of the building for construction when we were ch...

I've had an EV for six years, wouldn't go back. My wife still has an ICE car, which we've used the three times over those six years where we've needed to go further than our range. When I changed over, my insurance costs went down (probably because I wasn't switching to a Tesla), so your mileage (heh) may vary. I'm happy with the very low maintenance because I'm not a car guy and don't need that uncertainty in my life. There seems to be a lot of electric vehicle misinformation spread online.

The problem nowadays is you can have degrees in English and Philosophy, and still not be able to read or write properly. I'm recalling someone I worked with not long ago specifically with those degrees. Lecturer friends tell me kids are turning up with much lower standard of numeracy and literacy than 10 years ago. And because something like 70% of colleges are in financial distress, they need the students, they let almost anyone in on clearing, and they have to lower standards to meet the students. Employers agree it would make infinitely more sense to nudge kids into apprenticeships, and leave academia for the 10-20% who are suited to it. I transitioned back to industry a couple years ago after 10 years in academia. The fall off in quali...

Not video, but I subscribe to 1440 news (join1440.com). They send an email newsletter every day with the daily headlines. There's usually a couple interesting links in there that I end up following. I assumed there would be some video or audio source that would allow me to know the top N things that happen in a day. The aim was to not fall behind. The problem i am trying to solve is that i find myself parsing through cnn, bbc, nytimes etc. and feel it takes a lot of time to truly parse real news and consume it.

When I was his age, I also considered buying a house. Got pretty serious about it, but got cold feet. I ended up losing my job less than a year later. I moved out-of-state after that during a housing recession. If I had that house, it would have been a stressful and hefty albatross. I had my relationships and career to worry about. Renting may be "throwing money away", but it is buying flexibility at the time of your life that is most likely to need it.

Re: Carnegie Mellon or Stanford for computer science/robotics?
I want to point out two things. First, as others have already mentioned, since the RA position is tied to room and board, it is likely a Resident Assistant for the dorms, not a Research Assistant. Personally, I think supervising a bunch of dorm residents is a horrible use of a graduate student's time. It would also likely mean he couldn't pursue other on-campus employment like a research position, as most dorm RAs are assigned to half-time work and most American universities limit on-campus student employment to half-time equivalent during the academic year (something my grad school called "safe harbor" rules, but I can't recall the specifics). Second, this is not the OP's son, so we're hearing things third-hand (parents->OP->for...

I went to Carnegie Mellon, so I can't comment on Stanford. I never applied there. But I'd absolutely make the choice to go there again. CMU was foundational for me and even in the early 2000s was doing wild stuff with robotics.
However, that was for undergrad. Given the choice of a cherry internship/job offer, I'd probably take that.

Re: Is there a threshold to ditch the three-fund portfolio and put everything into Treasuries?
For how long? In which time period would T-bills beat a, say, 30/70 market portfolio? What if t-bills are 7% but inflation is 7%? If you have the capital and spending requirements such that you don't need to take the risk, and want to bet that inflation's effect on t-bill rates will be negligible, then sure, you can coast on it. Don't assume that longer duration will get you more yield. You can't exactly lock in the 5.25% on 12-month right now any longer on the curve.
To me, this is starting to ring the "Why not 100% XYZ?" indicator we get any time something is doing better than a balanced portfolio. "Why not 100 stocks?" in the boom times, "Why not 100% real estate" in 2007, etc.

I was younger then, though, so YMMV. I also stayed at a place where there were a lot of less than ethical practices. They would also not pay unemployment when firing people because they could bully people with lawyers and no one was ever rich/brave enough to fight back. The one I know who did fight back on a wrongful termination spent years in court and ended up losing (despite overwhelming evidence). I feel with that one would need to have ironclad smoking gun proof before bringing it to anyone and even then, I just don't know. Just ...

The world is absolutely full of jobs at that level right now. I wouldn't worry about the what-ifs if you switch and it doesn't work out, especially if you don't think you will be fulfilled with the current position.
The bigger question is what your plan is from getting where you are to where you want to be in the long term. You don't need to know exactly what that is because life is random and weird, but you should have some direction to help guide your choices.

I've been looking at funds like STIP for a while and find myself very confused by them. I see a 2.17% listed real yield at the link, but I also see a negative listed SEC yield. Distributions over the last several months have not seemingly had any relationship to the inflation rate + the real yield quoted at the time above inflation. Nor has there been capital appreciation (i.e. adding that yield to principal as an individual TIPS would). Presumably there has been price movement due to the rising short term interest rates as one would expect for any bond, but one should also see the specified yield coming into play there and I haven't seen it in the last several months. I think I understand how an individual TIPS works but I've tried to und...

Re: What Happens When EV Runs Out On The Road?
Most EVs have a "turtle mode" when the battery gets really low. Combined with a portable 110/220 adapter, that's supposed to allow an EV to limp to an outlet, then charge up enough to limp again to a fast charger. That's probably a sound strategy when you're a few miles short of a fast charger, not so much if you're 50-100 miles away. I've driven an EV for 6 years now and only had this happen once. I could have sucked it up and found a charger and waited but I was soooo close to home and was being somewhat unreasonable. Eventually, the car starts shutting down non-essential systems and limiting its acceleration/top-speed. I did make it home okay. AAA will do a jump charge in some areas, but I haven't ever had to use the service. ...

Re: U.S. stocks in free fall
I've had some taxable dollars that I have been buying VTI with at the top and then down every $10/share or so. Last was $205. I don't know if I'll bite at $195. The powder is running a bit low.
