Re: Data leak at Ally, with disturbing details

No one should be typing their online passwords in this day and age - that's what password managers are for. And they will only enter it if the web site is real. This is a very good point and one that is often overlooked...in addition to all of the other benefits of using a password manager, if you use a password manager to enter your username and password when you log in to a site you are effectively safe from being phished by a fake site. Is there a BH preferred password manager? I would not trust the chrome password manager with my financial institution logins. There are some great password managers out there. 1Password, Lastpass, Bitwarden, Keepass. 1Password seems to get the most praise for its user friendly interface. Some require a p...

Re: Any Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders planning on cancelling?

I wish the CSR would keep the 5% on Groceries forever. That would change my mind. I agree. The CSR only had the 5% on groceries for May and June. The CSR's 5% categories for the third quarter are not useful to me. More groceries would have been better. We won't know the fourth quarter until late September, so I'm closing the CSR when my fee comes due on September 1. Where can one learn of the bonus 5% categories for CSR? I can't locate them on chase.com. IMHO, Amex Gold has the best grocery rebate currently. (4% up to 25k a year in spend, assume 1.25 to 1.5 uplift when transferring points making it a 5 to 6% earn on groceries). Amex blue cash preferred is 6% on supermarkets but only up to $6K That's why Amex Gold is better (4% up to the $2...

Digging up an old thread I found in the search… For Fastmail users, do you find it worth $50 a year? Anyone use Posteo for about $15 a year? I’m trying to get away from Google entirely. I don’t like google tracking me across the web every time I sign in to check my Gmail. They may not be reading emails anymore, but just being logged in implicates major privacy concerns. That and someone sold my email so I’m getting tons of spam. I find Fastmail worth it. One of the benefits for me is to able to create multiple email alias when I sign up for a new service. I can create an email "bogleheads123@fastmail.com" to have it forward to my actual email account. It help prevents marketing companies buying databases and tracking people via e...

The only issue with Macs is that the keys don't work when you try to log in with Safari, I use Google Chrome and it works well. That's no longer true. macOS Catalina and macOS Big Sur both fully support using Yubikey in Safari. Were you able to login to Vanguard that way? I have a MacBook Air running a fully updated version of MacOS Catalina (Safari 14.1.1). I was just at the Vanguard website and when I attempted to register my Yubikey 5C, it stated that my browser does not support the use of a Yubikey and that I needed to use Chrome or Firefox as my browser. It seems that Safari doesn't support the use of the Yubikey as a FIDO U2F device, but only as a OTP key. Yubikey as a FIDO U2F device is supported (maybe Vanguard doesn't approve of i...

I use it to secure my most sensitive accounts. I have 3 (1 offsite, 1 always with me, 1 inside the home in a secure location). Any one of the 3 will work as the 2nd factor when I established it at various sites. (Of course, during setup, I needed to have all 3 with me).

Citi DoubleCash is not a gimmick. If you pay your bill every month, you basically get the 2% within a statement cycle.

Citi has 4 options to get the $$$ earned. Statement Credit, Direct Deposit (to a Citi account, or if you AutoPay from another account, you can use that), or two that I don't like..... (check by mail, or convert to points)

Of course, the Fidelity card is a good option too!

Re: Setting up Your Retirement Paycheck?

Setting up a "Paycheck" has been very helpful to me. I'm not yet getting Social Security, so I wanted a way to replicate what my allowed amount should be each month. I have a high-yield savings holding account (not linked to my checking account) that I put 6 months of cash into. This account automatically transfers a set amount on the 1st and 15th every month to my checking account. My checking account autopays all my utilities, credit cards, HOA fees, etc. Over the course of 6 months, I may receive dividends or other items. I may choose to reinvest them, or transfer them to the savings holding account. Every 6 months I evaluate what I need to sell to refill (if dividends have not done enough). This is basically a rebalancing exer...

I'm enrolled in a High Deductible Health Plan (that is HSA eligible). I've got my HSA at Fidelity.

Given that this is for my wife and I and we are over 55, the maximum allowable contribution for a "family" is 2021 is $8200. (It is normally $7200 a year)

If I contribute the full amount this tax year, does this get deducted from my gross income in addition to my standard deduction?

IUSB ETF as TLH partner for Total Bond?

I'm looking to do some Tax Loss Harvesting of a Total Bond Fund (e.g. AGG, BND, SCHZ) in a taxable account.

Normally, I would have to wait over 30 days to buy back in again to avoid the wash sale.

Would IUSB be an ETF that I could buy immediately and still avoid a wash sale? They track different indexes, and IUSB is a bit more risky (has 6-8% in Junk Bonds).

Re: Smarter approach to "emergency funds"?

Any gotchas I should be aware of where people would recommend against swapping this 200K of EALDX for AOK outright? Has the recent bond market conditions caused people to reconsider this allocation as beneficial? Alternatively, given the longer timeframe of this EF, might AOM or another ETF make more sense than AOK? It's an interesting debate to consider AOK for the Emergency Fund. Yielding about 2%. Of course, chasing yield always leads to scary outcomes. AOM might be too aggressive. It all comes down to math, AOK is a 31% Equity fund. If stocks decline by 50% what does that do to your emergency fund? Full disclosure, I own some AOK and yet never considered it as an emergency fund. Might have to do some research on this.... I just completed a direct rollover from my MegaCorp Fidelity 401k to a Fidelity Rollover IRA and Roth IRA. Flawless process, all electronic, no paper checks. It took a few days. The Traditional 401k balance was rolled into the Rollover IRA and the Roth 401k was rolled into the Roth IRA. Most of my assets are elsewhere and I'm looking to consolidate things. My plan in the future is to do an ACAT transfer (Requested from the other custodian) to pull the Rollover IRA and Roth IRA from Fidelity into the same IRA type accounts at the other custodian. My only question: Do I have to wait 12 months to perform the ACAT transfer? In theory, I don't think I have to wait because it is just changing custodians (it isn't a 2nd rollover or distribution).

Obviously many Bogleheads principles are perfect: Low Fees, 3 or 4 Index Funds, Live below your means, start early, time in market, etc.

I have two that have helped me a lot:
  • Diversify out of company stock grants. I did this in the late 90s (just before the tech bubble burst) and diversified. Yes, I paid some huge capital gains, but it set me up well (and before the company's stock went flat for over a decade)
  • Swallow my pride. Resolve a bad decision quickly. Yes, I bought some bad stocks, bought the wrong house. The key was to recognize it quickly and don't hold onto a mistake. Learn from it, sell the lousy investment and don't make the mistake again.

Schwab as a one stop shop is a great choice. Low fees, great customer service, fantastic checking account.

The Amex Platinum perk is great too once your assets grow. Getting $100 to $200 off a year makes this card very affordable with a lot of perks for traveling.

The only thing Schwab doesn't have is their own HSA. Other than that, they have a great platform. If we weren't in a weird low-yield environment, their savings account and purchased money market funds would easily match a high-yield savings account.

Every “perk” for Chase Sapphire Banking seems to be included in Schwab Bank Checking:
  • No foreign transaction fee on ATM card
  • All ATM fees reimbursed
  • No fees for wires, bank checks, etc
I was hoping that Sapphire Banking would add certain perks to their credit cards (e.g. make a Sapphire card earn 1 point more in every category).

Am I missing something?

I think Bank of America Preferred Rewards is a better perk (bumping up your credit card earning percentage anywhere from 25% to 75% depending upon size of assets).

Even Schwab will give you a $100 to $200 discount a year on an AMEX platinum (and a 1.25 conversion rate on points to cash).

What other great benefits (other than a one time $1000) are you seeing with Sapphire banking?

Do I have to let 1Password know about those passwords or does it generate a new password for each of the sites when visited? When you start using 1Password, the first time you login into an existing site of yours, 1Password will offer to save your existing credentials. 1Password will also warn you if they consider it to be a "weak" password, OR, if that password has been found on any databases of stolen passwords. 1Password also saves the URL of the website for that password, so if you ever get sent to a phishing request, 1Password would NOT try to fill in the userid/p...

No, that is not a possibility. 1Password simply does not have the keys to your password vault . Would it be more accurate to say that 1Password is not supposed to have the keys to your password vault? What happens if the owner of the password vault made their master key "1234" or "password"? I'm guessing there is a reasonable expectation that some keys could be guessed by just running typical hacking software with a database of common words. Yes, a weak “Master Password” is a bad strategy. Hopefully if someone is using a password manager, they will choose a phrase (multiple words strung together) as their master password. Your email getting hacked is more problematic. There is probably a lot more personal data than you realize in your email. There is also the risk that with many of these mail providers that once you are locked out by a hacker, there is virtually no customer support available to help you get control back. Losing access to your main email account would be a major hassle for most people these days. Many websites allow password resets using your email address. 1Password is much safer than trying to manage encryption yourself. End users are notorious for screwing that up. You are far more likely to mess up the encryption of your USB drive—or use a drive with flawed encryption to begin with—than 1Password is to be compromised. Rolling your own DIY security schemes is, in every case, a terrible idea. 1Password is simply incapable of leaking your passwords given their architecture. https://blog.1password.com/what-if-1password-gets-hacked/ +1 1Password has “2 factors” for every account (a master code which is greater than 30 characters, and your master password). If you forget this information, you can’t decrypt the password vault. 1Password (the company) can’t decrypt it either. This is what is refe...

Re: Improving Wi-Fi coverage: Use existing Cat5e and MoCA?

Eero mesh lets you commingle wired and wireless backhaul. I have one room that has no Ethernet pull, and putting it in would be a PITA; wireless unit there works fine. Eero doesn’t have a built-in switch as such, but there are two Ethernet jacks; one for the backhaul and one for other devices (in some locations, I use that to connect a proper switch). Another vote for Eero . Fantastic easy to use system. I live in a 2 story home, with concrete floors separating the 1st and 2nd floor (not good for wireless signals). I have an ethernet "back haul" that connects the two eero devices. One eero is on the first floor connecting to my ISP, and then the 2nd ethernet port connects to the cable that goes upstairs to connect to the 2nd eero...

Sorry if this is confusing. It seemed to all start with this game.
It sounds like you have some sort of malware on your Mac. Download malwarebytes and run a scan.

Re: Help me Buy iMac for $1,000 range?

I always buy Apple Certified Refurbished. Apple hides it a bit on their store (you have to scroll to the very bottom of every page). You can buy an iMac for just over $1k there....

I didn't realize News+ includes the WaPo and WSJ, that greatly increases the appeal to me.
I was incorrect. Here’s what is included in Apple News+ : “ Along with more than 300 magazines, Apple News+ includes paywalled subscription content from the following newspapers: The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, and Toronto Star.”

Re: Coping with Megacorp rat race

It's hard to understand what you have until you sample something else. I've worked at MegaCorps, a federal contractor, startups, and (now) for myself. Each have their advantages and disadvantages: I didn't understand the value of working for and with people I like until I worked for and with people I didn't like. I didn't understand why people would take less money to work fewer hours until I worked at 60-80 hour weeks at a soul-sucking MegaCorp. I didn't understand why people would trade salary for stock option lottery tickets at a startup until I had to make that choice. I didn't understand why people go nuts for WeWork and other neat office perks until I worked for a company that had them. I didn't understand why people wouldn't want to...
