You are correct. If you make more money or have a bonus you will need a way to defer tax to get back down into the 15% bracket. Also, remember taxes are calculated marginally.

You are definitely overthinking this. I think you should stick with your rule of thumb no matter what the retail price is. If you have budgeted $25 for non-close friends then spend up to that amount. Good luck!

Exodus, I assume you are living with your parents. If your income is $60K, do you know how it is spent? Do you keep a budget? (Just the act of keeping a budget makes you more aware of what you spend!) If you aren't paying your parents any rent, you should easily be able to save half of your income....

With your current income you can definitely afford it. Especially if you went the used car route. Although with luxury vehicles comes very high maintenance cost and even extra concerns, but if you are willing to pay that price then I would say this is a lifestyle choice.

If you are worried about paying tax on that $80-100K you will just have to report it, but you won't pay taxes on it. The lifetime gift tax exemption is 5M.
