Re: Everyone see NVidia this morning?...good for IRA account?
This is very anti-boglehead, but I do have a few hundred shares of NVDA, been watching it for years. I think AI will be big, almost big as internet, so I have the conviction that NVDA will continue the upward for years to come. That said, it makes up around 3% of my invested assets, with rest being in indexes.

I dipped my toes into Fundrise, investing 5 figures. I also have 6 figure investment with DLP Capital. After using both for 9 months, I am withdrawing from Fundrise and moving the rest of the funds into DLP.
Reasons:
Reasons:
- DLP is more tax efficient (benefit of depreciation vs regular 1099 from Fundrise)
- More transparency from DLP, including audited financials, quarterly financial statements, regular Q&A from CEO himself
- More investment offerings from DLP, giving me flexibility and options down the road

Our income also has negligible effect on our investments, but we keep a monthly tracker. It is fun to see the balances grow. We also set annual goals and try to beat those as well.

Update: I was looking at my old messages and saw this post that is a few years old. Wanted to provide an update. I ended up leaving the job. Went to a startup with almost 2 hour commute each way. However, it ended up going IPO about 2 years after I joined. Learned a lot and grew tremendously as a person. Financially, life changing due to the IPO and we are FI now but haven't RE yet, although I took a good 5-6 months off. I just started at another promising startup a couple of months ago. Going to assess every year to see whether to pull the plug or not. Personally, it paid off to take the risk. Now, IPO is never a sure thing, but I think the hot market definitely helped as we saw a record number of IPOs, although not all of them were succes...

We are FI but we continue to invest. Our interest rate is very low, and the thing about making extra payments to mortgage is that benefit is not realized until the FULL balance is paid off; in other words, the mortgage payment amount continues to be static whether you still own 80% or 20% of the mortgage. Yes you save on interest but you would be earning more if invested theoretically.

As others have mentioned beware of AMT. We are in a similar situation and liquidating our exercised shares this year, but we are planning to keep a couple thousand shares since we already paid AMT on them last year before the company went IPO and the valuation at the time was much lower than currently traded prices. Anything recently exercised are going to be sold despite us having to pay ordinary tax rate on them which will be almost 50%

Re: Honda CRV EX-L hybrid 2021 model
Now is the worst time to buy a car due to all the shortages. Accordingly, dealerships are adding "dealer add-on" to ALL cars in tune of 10% - 20%, not just the ones in high demand. I would imagine hybrid CRV would be in high demand due to high gas prices. Those fees look ridiculous though. As a Tesla Model 3 owner, it's a game changer. We have taken it for 300+ mile trips multiple times and there are sufficient chargers (Tesla super chargers) for your needs. They are much cheaper than gas too and in 15 minutes, you will gain 200+ miles in range. I would imagine NJ has sufficient Superchager network for your needs if you need to travel long distance. As for a home charger, we didn't get a Tesla brand. We got one that plugs into a r...

You should do a search, there has been countless discussions on this topic.
Personally, I would do lump sum. In fact, I just invested mid 6 figures lump sum 2 weeks ago. I would have done the same if it was 7 figures. I don't want to waste energy hesitating and second guessing when it has been proven that time in the market > timing the market.

I worked at a startup and didn't participate in any of the tenders. Really didn't move the needle for us so I approached it as all or nothing. It did pay off for us, as when the company IPO'ed, the price went up significantly, to a point where we became FI. But each company is different, and the risk of whether IPO will actually happen or not is always there.

I think there are two ways to look at this. Either 1) you feel like the gain is sufficient and you want to lower the risk or 2) you ride the fund for further gains. I don't really think you can lose with either option currently.
I personally believe that we are in a very equity friendly environment and will attempt to fully take advantage to the extent I feel comfortable. This means even though majority of my holdings are in index ETFs/funds, I have allocated a portion that I feel comfortable with into more aggressive investments. Will they play out? Nothing is guaranteed, but I am willing to roll the dice.

Tesla's going to have increasing competition in the electric car market: Hyundai, Aspark (Japan), Audi, Jaguar, Lexus, Chevrolet, Mazda, Mercedes, BMW, Cadillac, Ford, GMC, Lotus, Nissan, and others. https://tinyurl.com/yyro98he It's going to be an increasingly crowded (and competitive) space. Consumers will have choices, and at multiple price points. Competition is good. But the rest of the companies are ~10 years behind from battery and electric motor efficiency perspective (not to mention Autopilot). You have to remember, Tesla has been focusing on EV tech all this time, while the companies you mentioned have to transition R&D to EV (with exception of Nissan and some of others but they are still way behind). Thank you everyone for your thoughtful responses. I have read every single response and they are somewhat representable of all the echoes and thoughts rushing through my head. For some clarity, we haven't put anything into 529 yet as we wanted to make sure we get our retirement taken care of first. We definitely plan to help our children in their pursuit of education if they chose to. For the tax situation on the IPO, it will be around 45% for combined federal and state. To be conservative, I am going to use 50% tax rate on the IPO earnings. As of today's closing price, our NW excluding house equity would be just under $2.9M if we account for expected tax (we plan to hold just above 10% of total shares for LT). We expect the company to do w...

Hello Bogleheads, We are very fortunate in that we became FI due to some significant events (IPO, hot stock market) in 2020. I have been an avid reader and thought I would be ready to navigate through all the options at disposal, but find that I don't have a concrete plan. All numbers below represent index funds with exception of taxable as noted and cash. My diamond hands gave away this morning. Held all week through all the up and downs (especially yesterday's huge drop) and sold most of my positions at the peak today.
I learned even more about the market and the hedge funds through this experience; it somewhat made me lose faith in the market. Most of my holdings are in index funds, and gains from this experience will add more than just additional VTI.
EDIT: Still holding some shares.

We are approximately 1.5% cash and rest in equity. Thinking of converting about $200k into bonds from equity and then keep contributing to equity. Or just stay the course and keep accumulating to equity.
We have approximately $598k remaining in our mortgage, but thinking about just investing more rather than paying it down since the rate is so low.

Question for folks who applied to LenderFi - how far in the process do you have to go before you are presented with their "lower" rates compared to their website? I just started the application process and gave them by personal info, but haven't submitted or signed any papers (disclosures etc) and their rates don't look that great. For example, I am looking at 3% 30 year for $600k loan and it requires $3.1k in points still. Would appreciate any advice.
UPDATE: I called the loan officer assigned to me, and basically stated that I am ready to refinance within next couple of days and shopping around. The offer received is 30 year 2.875% with no closing cost. Have 30 year 3.5% loan now so super happy about this.

It was a great opportunity as I learned a ton but it was stressful and long hours. Looking back, glad got that out of the way before our first kid was born. I think some of the biggest opportunities come when you move to another company. I would learn as much as you can in your current position. Always keep your options open when you see positions you may be interested in. For all aspiring accountants, I think the best path is to join a Big 4, whether that means starting from regional first and transferring. Of course there will be exceptions...

I have a slightly different view. I don't see VTI or VTSAX (or any other index funds) as a haystack. Rather, I see it as a stack of different materials. Some are more flammable than others in this environment, and if you pick something that is more flammable, then it might not end well, so WHY NOT own a pile of different materials rather than hoping some materials (single stocks) you pick will not "burn"?

Re: Coronavirus and the market
Through this week's downturn, I learned that my tolerance level is very high so I learned something new. Went through 2008 downturn too but my asset wasn't that big. I really appreciate this opportunity to pick up shares around December levels.

Re: 38 yr old having 2nd thoughts...
I just turned 40 and I have very minimal bond holdings. All the recent sell off hasn't rattled me at all. If anything, I welcome the market cooling down a little. It was just too crazy past few months.

Re: Where to invest emergency fund?
We have to pay taxes on savings account anyways, so don't see paying taxes on STAR fund to be a big deal. We bought STAR a while back. Besides, it's not a significant holding.anon_investor wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2020 12:06 pmInteresting mix of a tax inefficient mutual fund and a muni bond ETF. Any particular reason for that that?

I am not sure about using 8%, that does seem very optimistic. It may end up being higher or lower, but personally, I would use a rate that is lower and work backwards to see how much you need for taxable account. But yes, I think the order would be max ROTH, 401k up to match or at a rate you are able to (after determining how much you need to contribute to taxable), and then dump leftover to taxable.

We have our EF split between STAR fund, VTEB, and savings account. We also have mutual funds and ETFs in taxable if necessary.

Re: You Cant Time The Market
I just tell myself that I don't know anything, and the only thing I can control is how I invest. Therefore, I just keep buying regardless what the market says. Coronavirus? Buy. Bernie leading the caucus? Buy. Companies blowing away earnings? Buy. Trump news? Buy. All the events are just noise, I don't know how the market will react.

Re: Why is my Vanguard account balances always delayed?
I think OP is talking about balances reflecting new trades, not update to valuation for existing investments.
I think this comes with the territory if investing with Vanguard and the company not having the greatest IT infrastructure. They probably do a "batch" type of update later in the day, versus more up-to-date updates done that Schwab and Fidelity with more modern IT set up. Doesn't bother me much, but I can see how it can be a nuisance.
