Re: How to Plan for Medicare Costs 13 Years from Now?

Here's my short experience with Medicare Part B premiums (basic rates)

Year Part B premium
2018 $134
2019 $135.5
2020 $144.6
2021 $148.5

So from 2018 to 2021 annualized increase = (148.5/134)^(1/3)= 1.018^.333 or 1.0347 (3.48%) average annual increase

Re: Pension v. lump sum

Hi Ranger- I took the lump sum for my pension. I'm by no means an expert or authority on such matters, but thought I'd share my decision. I'm married with two young children (10 years old). We own our home, have $5.5 million in retirement investments (401k and after-tax), 2 year emergency fund, and...

Re: ER and 12B-1 fees

The 12b-1 fees are part of the expense ratio. It is one of several fees that all get added together to equal the expense ratio. Sometimes they are listed separately and it is not very obvious that they are added together. https://www.morningstar.com/InvGlossary/expense_ratio.aspx Thanks for that bi...

It's always been my experience when there is a 12B-1 fee it's listed as a separate fee and typically 0.25% which is in addition to the ER.

I've rented from Payless about 10 times over an 8 year period when in Vegas. You will need to shuttle over to car rental centralized facility. The first several times I was hit with all the up-sell pressure tactics. Stood firm and resisted their attempts to sell me the extras. After those first seve...

We have 2 children, both daughters. Both got married... the oldest in 2003 at the age of 25 and the youngest in 2006 at the age of 26. Both wanted a wedding reception, etc. Each received $10,000 from us for the wedding and each planned their own wedding. We also paid for their wedding dresses. Our d...

Personally I would never consider going without Homeowners Insurance. I consider it one of the better values out there.... at least in my case. I'm insuring a 2000 sq ft house in Southeast Michigan for 16.6 cents per $100 house value (example: $500 premium for $300,000 house). That also includes $50...

I've had good luck signing on with this website. Once you add your LAN line number, if you get a robocall or a spooling call, the call will be intercepted after 1 ring. It works and its free.

Using 3% inflation factor will require $170,000 per year 18 years from now to be the equivalent of $100,000 expense level in todays dollars. Using a SWR of 3% you will need about $5,670,000 (18 years down the road) to be able to generate the required $170,000 per year. Using an 8% nominal return wo...

What to do, what to do? In my pre-boglehead years I purchased a variable annuity with a guaranteed lifetime income rider. I did this when I retired at 57 and purchased the annuity with part of my traditional 401K IRA. The annuity is now free of any surrender charges. It has an "income base' ann...
