alternative i didn't see mentioned: Costco refills ink cartridges (both color and B&W) for very cheap. My HP inkjet cartridges run $20-30 new. the refill is ~$7-8. just drop it off at the photo center, and go shopping. then come back 15-20 mins later and they are all filled up and ready to go.

don't know what the "right" answer is (or if there is one) but we also use the newer (safer) car when we are traveling as a family (with kids) for any trip >15-20 minutes mostly because it is bigger and safer. both are used as commuter cars on typical working days.
