Re: Asking for a raise/promotion with another offer in hand

I would hope then that you aren’t part of the majority of employers that discriminate against candidates who aren’t currently employed when they seek a position on your team. Do you own a business? Sure do. So how do you feel about an employee who is looking for another job on your dime? How do you...

Re: Another bay area housing thread..

I'm sorry, but to many of us in the non-RSU world of just a salary, it is hard to relate. House prices in the Bay area are in part due to the distortion of the tech world. Having said that, I had a family member who, before the tech bubble burst, was pretty hard to listen to as he bragged about his...

Re: Life at crossroads. What would you do ?

What exactly is old tech? In the Bay Area, that means almost anything that people were doing in tech 10+ years ago. :( I guess I'm mummy dust! :P The 3 hour commute in the bay area is no exaggeration. With 2 million dollars, I'd find something for less money, that's less stressful and closer to hom...

Re: [Amazon Prime Day]

So... my Echo Dot shipped and I'm already having buyers remorse that big brother is going to be listening in on me and whether this was a good idea. I'm not talking about the government. I'm talking about a billion dollar company that wants to make money off of me. Any gadget that needs an internet...

Re: Seeking advice on 1.2m (now 900K) house purchase

I was born and raised in San Francisco. We've owned property from San Jose to outer SF. You couldn't pay me to enter this overpriced, ridiculous market again. I look at MLS and Trulia now if I'm having a bad day and need a good laugh. Junker homes in the outer mission of SF (where I grew up) going f...

Re: Seeking advice on 1.2m house purchase

Exactly 40. Fortunately, for the work that I do, I get paid more in a downturn (coz I specialize in business turnaround). The average age for sr. management in my company seems higher than other Bay Area companies, and we've never had a major layoff (again, I work for one of the FANG companies). Th...

Re: Seeking advice on 1.2m house purchase

How old are you? If you're greater than 40 years old, your chances of being laid off from a Silicon Valley technology company is not out of the realm of possibilities. Also, the chances of being hired at the same compensation package or greater is reduced. In fact, the job competition is brutally fi...

Re: Interview follow-up

I guess I'm the poster with the odd comments regarding references. :confused In my past professional experience, I've never had potential employers reach out to my references until I had a conditional offer in hand (I'm in California, if that matters). I've worked for a major bank, retailer and a te...

Re: Interview follow-up

I'm confused, they asked for and checked for references and haven't provided a conditional job offer yet? I ask because I encountered the same situation last year. I don't know if this is a new "thing" with employers, but it's pretty rude to bug someone's references when there's nothing concrete yet...

Re: Starting new job mid-career - What advice to learn from my past?

I will preface my reply to you with this: I generally dislike the majority of the human race. I would've preferred that my career was working in a lab looking under a microscope all day and writing research papers. But alas, I got tempted by money in the technical field. As I grew in my career to mi...

Re: Federal pension beats high salary and savings rate? (fed vs contractor for employment)

I'm a later in life new federal employee. I transitioned after 35+ years in the private sector riding high with a nice compensation package. My pay now is significantly lower, but my medical plan blows away anything I had in the private sector. Also, they contribute 1% automatically into my TSP, plu...

Re: How do you cope with regret over selling too soon?

Don't look back. Most of us have made investment decisions where we'd like to kick ourselves in the butt. We sold our house in the Silicon Valley back in 2003 for 450k. That house will sell for over a 1 million today. I bought Apple stock in 1995 (Scully was CEO?) for $9 a share and dumped it a coup...

Re: Just laid off - what to do

Here's my story - I hope you can glean some nuggets from my experience: I'm in my mid 50's and was laid off for the first time ever in my career last summer. I was a mid-level manager for a technology company who decided to close their Silicon Valley office. Guess what? Most of the 100 or so people ...

Re: Getting Rid of Google Search Result??

It's difficult to remove a home address, especially when you own real estate. A P.O. box is the way to go. You have to let that P.O. address "age" for a while out there to catch up. Also, cease and desist on receiving Victoria's Secret catalogs, Nordstrom, or any other retail catalog at your home ad...

Re: Getting Rid of Google Search Result??

Sadly, removing personal information from a google search is whack a mole situation. Since I have a very unusual name, I have to stay on top of keeping my name and address off the web. Here's my experience with scrubbing your information: 1) You must be patient and diligent. 2) Remove yourself or lo...

Income Drop / Social Security Benefits

I have a 38 year work  record with Social Security. The last 8-10 years of my career were my highest income years. I'm about to start a job making about 2/3 less than my highest income years. Will my estimated social security benefit amounts going forward take a big hit because I will be earn...

Re: Wireless Surveillance Camera System Recommendation

Personally, I would never run my surveillance cameras or any other security system using my home wi-fi. There's too much instability with wifi for my tolerance level. Streaming Netflix is one thing, security systems are an entirely different game. My cameras are hard wired with a POE and with my vid...

Re: job loss, portfolio and retirement advise

Here's what I'd do: 1. Sell the house. This will help cut & stress down significantly. 2. Rent a cheap condo while looking for next job. 3. Don't move your portfolio money around until 2017 to avoid tax impact. You have a severance, so you need to minimize / avoid AMT. 4. Cut cost, cut cost, cut co...

I'm just curious - do any of you who posted to this thread actually work (or live) in the Silicon Valley? Ageism is RAMPANT in the Silicon Valley. Just pull up a career site (or sites, if you are so inclined...) of any tech company located here and check out the smiling young people. And while you'r...

It's quite possible. He doesn't recall anything or anybody unusual while he was withdrawing cash the other day.

I'm stressed and worried sick that getting our money back from Citibank is going to be a PIA. :(

Citibank/Cardtronics ATM Fraud / Personal Bank Acct

Hello BHs, This morning, I found that my checking account had three fradulent withdrawals from a Cardtronics (7-11??) ATM against my checking account (totaling 1k). Citibank opened an investigation and will refund this money when they concluded with their findings. I haven't used my ATM/debit card i...
