Re: Submitting tax returns for prior years?

Recent article of interest.

The IRS has 940,000 unclaimed tax refunds from 2020 that are about to expire. Is one of them yours?
WASHINGTON (AP) — The IRS is warning taxpayers that they may be leaving more than $1 billion on the table.

The federal tax collector said Monday that roughly 940,000 people in the U.S. have until May 17 to submit tax returns for unclaimed refunds for tax year 2020, which total more than $1 billion nationwide.

The average median refund is $932 for 2020. Texas (93,400), California (88,200), Florida (53,200) and New York (51,400) have the largest amount of people potentially eligible for these refunds.

They said it’s the inflation. I told them I might leave and look elsewhere.

How do you negotiate this?
Others can chime in but I don’t think you can. You could possibly modify your coverages to get a lower rate. Plenty of threads here since inflation kicked up dealing with higher rates.

An 80/20 split with 40% towards international would be something like this:
48% - Total US Stock Market Index
32% - Total Int'l Stock Market
20% - Total US Bond Market
What funds are you using to come up with those percentages? I thought Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (VTSAX) vs.
Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund (VTIAX) were nearly 100% US vs. Int'l, respectively.
They are using the funds you listed if at Vanguard. It provides 80% equities and 20% bonds with the 80% equites being a 60/40 split US vs. Intl. (60% of 80% is 48% and 40% of 80% is 32%). The remaining 20% is US Bonds.

There is no 1099 associated with a contribution. You simply report it on your tax return. Separately you cannot and do not need report the conversion performed in 2024 as that will be reported on next years tax return using a 1099 supplied at that time.

You could simply roll the $14k to an IRA and then convert it to Roth. Tax of course will be due but will be at your marginal rate unless it pushes you into the next bracket. It’s likely small dollars in the scheme of things regardless.

This approach allows you to continue the Backdoor Roth unabated.

Prior to age 60 adjustments to prior earnings are made each year using the NAWI National Average Wage Index (NAWI) rather than the Social Security COLA. Please see this post below that I pulled from a prior thread. Upon reflection, I'd better clarify that what actually counts for calculating your benefits is the NAWI at age 60 (your "indexing year"). Through age 59: Age X indexed value = (age X nominal value) * (age 60 NAWI) / (age X NAWI) Afterwards, earnings are not indexed: Age X indexed value = age X nominal value NAWI values for a given year are published in October (IIRC) of the following year. So you don't know the age 60 NAWI until October of your 61st year. If you want to project your SS benefits before you know the age 6...

There is no requirement to declare any withdrawal as an RMD in advance. It’s the amount withdrawn that matters that is shown on your 1099(s).

If you are willing to take the additional market risk by moving to 100% equities in the Inherited IRA now then you can do so.

There is no possibility of a Wash sale between the IRAs and Roth accounts themselves. Wash sales can only occur in a Taxable Brokerage account which could be impacted by a sale in the IRA or Roth.

Welcome to the forum! Without doing any math the issue appears to be that you aren’t accounting for the principal portion of the payment. The P&I is $1225 a month. You have to invest more at that rate in order to cover the full payment. And of course taxes on the earnings will eat into that.

I suggest you look at an amortization schedule for the mortgage.

I do this every year. I have no taxes taken out of my SS check and then at the end of the year I take a lump sum RMD and have enough tax taken out to equal last year's tax payment. Then I settle up in April if more is owed. This avoids any penalty for underpayment. I think you have to do take a yearly lump sum payment to take advantage of this but I'm not positive about that. There is no requirement about how many, much or often one does this (exception: must pay enough to satisfy safe harbor rules). It all appears on your 1099-R as "withholding". I do the same thing... the only downside is that if you forget or inconveniently die before you pay, it leaves the poor ying who files your last tax return scrambling to pay the bill. I...

Welcome to Bogleheads.

Existing balances in any form of a tax deferred IRA interferes with performing a Backdoor Roth as it brings the pro rata rule into play.

To enable Backdoor Roths you would need to roll them into an employer plan such that you have a zero balance in any an all IRAs (Tradirional, Simple, SEP) on 12/31 of the year in which you perform the Backdoor process.

Please take time to read our wiki on the subject.

You have filed correctly. The check comes the following month and provides her with the full age 70 benefit.
The SSA issues checks a month behind, so your benefits should start arriving the month after the month you turned 70. For example, if you were born July 17, you should ask that your benefits start in July and your first check will come in August.
