Re: Converting after tax contributions to a roth 401k

Do folks agree that a backdoor Roth IRA should be prioritized before after tax 401k contributions? Of course we don’t know the fund offerings within the OPs 401k plan, which may factor into this recommendation. IMHO the after-tax 401k should be the priority. OP may not have that job later in the ye...

Re: For Those Who Purchased Ally No Penalty CD's in Dec/Jan

I have gone to Tresury Direct. Looked up auctions. I see upcoming auctions 13 and 26 week. I did read Treasury Bill go up to 52 weeks and bid every 4 weeks. I don't see what the rate will be. I can only see past rates when I open. Where do I see the interest rates on upcoming auctions. "The price o...

I have a Chase bank account for this reason. Just keep the min $1,500 for no fees. Also good to have for notary.
You only need $300 in a Chase savings account with no fees.

NJ has income exclusions if you are 62 and if your income is less than $100K (MFJ). After 2020, the exclusion is $100K. Of course, this could very well change in the next 30 years.

Re: Should I choose Roth 401K because of SS tax?

It seems that SS is taxed up to 85% based on combined income. Is it a good idea to choose Roth 401K over Pretax 401K so that combined income will be lower at retirement to reduce social security tax? I understand the current tax rate vs retirement tax rate is a major consideration, but is this also...

I used HRBlock Deluxe software (on CD). Paid $13.99 in December from Amazon.com. Used IRS Direct Pay for 4868 automatic extension on 3/19, with extra paid to induce a refund for savings bonds. E-filed through HRBlock software on 3/20. Return processed ~3/24. Refund (direct deposit) received 3/28. Pa...

Re: Buying CDs each month for decades

Yes, you can do it, if that's what you need to do to motivate investment participation. Brokered CDs don't necessarily always give you the best interest rates, but it's convenient to not have to transfer the money across banks. They also pay interest dispersed instead of compounded, so that makes it...

State Farm's website needed me to enter the account number of the CD for it to show up in my account. Had to make sure I wrote it down when I went through the process of opening the CD. Customer support phone was very courteous and helpful, but basically said to wait. For about a week, I felt like I...

Re: I-Bonds for a 30s couple?

I think a more accurate description of I bonds is that it is a 6-month CD that auto-renews with a new rate, inaccessible for the first year, with no withdrawal penalty after 5 years, and that it lets you defer paying taxes on the accumulated interest for 30 years. The comparison to a 30 year CD is n...

Re: Help me understand: Why 3 fund over FFNOX?

This isn't exactly what you asked, but I'm in the situation where you would be in the future if you had invested into FFNOX after a long time instead of just a 3 or 4 fund portfolio. The reason to use FFNOX is that [1] you want its composition and [2] have less than $20842 to invest. These are separ...

I may make some people angry by saying this, but the people who suggest "all in" have vested interests in you doing just that because it creates demand for the same holdings. I did not see it stated here where anyone (the Vanguard advisor or forum participants) who said to go "all in" _actually_ ask...

Open 5 CDs of $6000 each in durations of 1 year, 2 year, 3 year, 4 year, and 5 year. As each CD matures, use it to fund your annual Roth IRA contribution. It doesn't return much, but it's safe, and adds dollar-cost averaging over an extended time. If it turns out you won't need the money from a CD t...

I'd be thrilled with 3% real returns for the next 10 years. what investment(s) do you think have the best chance of returning 3% real with the least amount of risk? EE bonds held for 20 years are guaranteed to reach full face value (you purchase at half face value). Therefore, the interest rate is ...
