Re: CVT -- I have 4 different transmisssions.

I guess I have one of each: a 2011 Corvette Grand Sport with a 6-speed manual on the floor; another 2011 Corvette with a 6-speed automatic with optional paddle shifters on the steering wheel; a GMC Sierra Extended Cab pickup truck with a 4-speed automatic; and a 2013 Nissan Sentra with a CVT.

The two Corvettes are our weekend, good weather fun cars. The truck is my daily driver and the Nissan is my wife's daily driver. The Corvettes aside, I much prefer her Nissan with CVT to the chugging gear changes in my GMC.

I suggest you test drive the new Subaru and the new Nissan. I will bet you will like the CVT.

Re: [Enlisted in Military, How to Start?] 18 years old.

coldav wrote:$1,600 a month, wow! In '68 I went in making about $90 a month and came out a few years later, an E-5, earning $256.

I looked up your MOS, Intelligence, and it seems like a good choice.
I also started at $90 monthly. After about 4 months, it was bumped up to $110. That extra $20 meant a lot to me during that time. :happy

Re: New Nissan Altima 2013 with 300 miles on it...

I bought a GMC truck with 400 miles on it and the warranty was good until 36,400 miles. As it turned out, I hit 36 months with only 22,000 on the odometer, so it didn't matter.

I purchased two new Corvettes last year (my wife's and my "retirement fun" cars) and both were trucked to my residence with 2 miles on the odometers. I know these purchases are not very Boglehead-like, but it was the first time we have ever splurged on anything after getting the fifth and last kid out of the house.

SMU

If he has the option, I would suggest SMU, clearly. I am a Texas Longhorn fan, and am familiar with people who have graduated from both schools.

Based on my observation, I would pick SMU. In saying so, I do not suggest that TCU is less than a fine institution, only that I would choose SMU.

Best wishes to him.

<"My guess is that guns and ammo have also gone up in price.">

I reload my own shotgun shells, and I can tell you from first-hand observation that the price of ammunition has skyrocketed. Twenty-five pounds of lead shot are now going for almost $50.00 per bag.

The last time I bought a partial pallet of 40 bags (1000 pounds), they cost me $13.75 per bag. I'm almost afraid to use up my last dozen bags because I know the cost of replacement lead.

Nevertheless, I just loaded 150 shells into the back of my Suburban to shoot at my gun club tomorrow.

Bread Baking - Dough is Rising Right Now

Your post is very timely. It's 6:00 a.m. in Austin and my dough has been rising since half-time of the #1 Texas Longhorns football game last night.

I used a combination of 3 1/2 cups of King Arthur bread flour and 1 1/2 cups of King Arthur traditional whole wheat flour. I also added 4 ounces of chopped toasted pecans and 2 ounces of finely chopped sun-dried tomatoes. I'll work the dough back down in a couple of hours when I add it to the enamel cast iron dutch oven. Then I'll let it rise for a couple of more hours before baking it in a 450* oven. And then, it's outside to the Big Green Eggs for the main courses.

What a perfect day here today. How about those Texas Longhorns!!

Exceptional Wives

<<You've got a very special gal there -- not many women would love a gun as a present.>> My wife has received and appreciated a Beretta product for a birthday present and a Benelli product for a Mother's Day present. Although she sold the Benelli Montifeltro a few years later and bought a diamond necklace with the proceeds, she enjoyed using it while she had it. With regard to earlier conversations about Ruger vs. S&W vs. Taurus, I would just say the Taurus would rank third on my list. I have both Ruger and S&W products and like them both. I do use Uncle Mike's combat grips on a Ruger .357 magnum revolver to lessen felt recoil. On the other hand, a small S&W .38 special Airweight loaded with snakeshot once saved my Vizsla (pictu...

What I'm Reading Today

I'm reading Against the Gods. It is an analysis of the study of risk and the management of risk in all facets of life. The author is Peter L. Bernstein. Its scope ranges from gaming theory in the first few centuries A.D. to investment theory in the present day.

I have been, and remain, out of the new vehicle market for so long that I don't know what a RAV4 or a WRX is. I bought a new 1996 GMC Suburban. It hauls me, my family, my dog, and my shotguns everywhere we need to go. I hope to replace it in 2015 when it reaches its 20th birthday and has 300,000 miles on it. I don't have a picture of me, my wife, or the Suburban, but you can see my beautiful Vizsla in my avatar.

Welcome to Austin and UT, Coach Gail Goestenkohrs! Duke's loss is definitely our gain.

Thanks to Moderators and Administrators

I would like to express my thanks to the volunteer, unpaid moderators and administrators. I have belonged to the classic diehards group for several years. I seldom post, but I read daily. I own and have read almost every book by all the authors who post here and, of course, by Jack Bogle.

I have learned a lot - thanks to the collective efforts and thoughts of those who populate this and the other board.
