Re: Hawaii Trip: advice

With 10 days, you could split it evenly between two islands but I would suggest sticking with one so you're not rushed and you can fully explore one instead of half exploring both. I haven't been to Maui yet but I have been to Big Island. There is a lot to do and you'll need a rental car. You can: -snorkel at two step beach (absolutely amazing and it's a 5 minute walk from where you park). It's right next to the Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park which is a cool experience too -see green sand beaches at Papakōlea (requires a 4x4 to get there or a guided tour. There are people with 4x4s who can take you back and forth after the road turns to dirt) -see a black sand beach at Punalu'u and Pohoiki -hike down and explore at Pololū val...

Re: Has surviving stock market crash made you more resilient

I feel like it has. When we purchase equities, we assume we can hold them for at least 5, preferably 10 years or more. Such conclusions usually occur during calm periods, where we have time to rationalize. When markets crash, however, sometimes our brain wants us to react in ways we didn't expect.

During market crashes, I personally like to look my balances. Seeing the drop in real time and still reminding myself of the long term appreciation of equities but at the same time, the short term volatility, helps me to stick with my asset allocation.

As someone else mentioned, if you don't know how much data you personally use, you should find out. That way you have a better grasp about possible costs if you aren't looking at unlimited data plans.

I use Google Fi and normally use about 2GBs of data and I pay around $45 per month. An added perk, however, is that when I travel internationally, they automatically set me up and I still pay the same amount in data as if I were back in the states. So if you travel internationally at a decent clip, it's something worth looking into.

I use Fidelity for 99% of my banking needs, such as direct deposit, check writing and deposit, and bill pay. I particularly love their money market fund options and how they can be automatically liquidated for withdrawal needs.

I also have TD Bank because I can have $100 in their basic account and not incur any fees, so I have it open in case I need anything that requires me to be in person for. I've been thinking about switching to a Capital One 360 account instead though since there aren't any minimums, they have physical locations, and I can deposit cash in any CVS location.

Re: "The Case For International Diversification"

I like international for diversity and potential rate of return differences. I started getting serious about investing in 2016 when I was 29 and at the time, international was fairly depressed so it made perfect sense to construct my portfolio which is similar to the Trev H 4 fund from back in the day on this forum; a 50:50 USA/INTL split, with half my international in developed, and the other half in VSS (mid/small cap). I particularly enjoy the 50/50 split as I can't be more wrong than the times I'm right. Mr. Larimore is a proponent of the three fund portfolio. However, he himself has since exited international and settled on a simple two fund portfolio of Total Us and Total US Bond. I assume he came to the same conclusion as Mr. Bogle -...

Re: Tax equivalent yield math check

First, some notes on tax rates. FTEXX (Fidelity Municipal Money Market) is not exempt from VA state tax; only the small fraction of the fund held in VA tax-exempt bonds is exempt. And the Treasury portion of taxable funds is exempt from VA state tax, although that is only 1% for SPRXX (Fidelity Money Market). But the more important issue is that muni money-market yields fluctuate; today's yield is not a good estimate of the returns over the next few months, as it would be for a conventional fund. There have been several threads on this forum which show a graph of historical muni and Treasury money-market yields. Therefore, it makes more sense to choose based on long-term relationships between rates, which suggests using the muni fund only ...

Tax equivalent yield math check

Hello all, I was doing some research on tax-equivalent yields and it seems like a treasury option might be best with my tax rates but I wanted to make sure my math is correct. I live in VA and in the 5.75% bracket and on the cusp of the 22%/24% federal bracket after deductions. I use Fidelity and two of my choices for a money market fund is either SPRXX, which is taxable for federal and state with a 7-day yield of 4.35%, or FTEXX, which is tax-exempt from federal and state with a 7-day yield of 3.43%. My math is the following: TEY = (tax exempt yield) / (1-marginal tax rate) Which for 22% federal + 5.75% is: (0.0343) / (1-.2775) = 0.0475 Which for 24% federal + 5.75% is: (0.0343) / (1-.2975) = 0.0489 SPRXX would have to have an SEC yield of...

My pleasure! I'm not sure if you have an account at Fidelity already but once you set it up, it's very easy to maintain. Their app is great too. There have been times when I needed to withdraw x dollars from an ATM and when I checked my balance via the app, I saw that I needed more, so I initiated a transfer and it was available when I went to the ATM a minute or so later.

Re: How do I: TSP & VG Roth?

80% C and 20% S is a good approximation for a Total Stock fund.

I believe for emerging markets with respect to the I fund, you would also need approximately 20% in emerging markets to make the I fund more of a total international one. It may not be worth the hassle of adding it depending on your allocation to international stocks.

A good approximation for the I fund is the VEA ETF, which is Vanguard's Developed Market fund. You can click on the exposures tab to see the differences between that fund and a total international fund like VXUS:

There are a lot of good tinting films out there. I would make sure it's ceramic and have a transferrable lifetime warranty so even if you move, you still have coverage at other shops in case it starts to bubble. I don't recommend doing it yourself. Take it to a professional. Tinting is definitely worth it. Keeps the cabin cooler, less glare from the sun, and it will help protect your interior pieces from fading. People are commenting on tint levels and it's true, the lower the percent, the darker it is. I recommend 20-35% being the lowest one should go, provided it's legal in your state (check your state's tint laws). 20% can seem darker in dimly lit environments so you could opt for at least 35% to play it safe. This is me, but I think mis...

Depending on when the money clears, if your son is not maxing out his tax-deferred accounts this year (such as the 401k if he's W-2) I would suggest he makes the maximum contributions he can before the end of the year and use the 140K to make up for the income shortage. Then, in January, max out the IRA and set up the payday 401k contributions so he will max it out in 2022 by his last paycheck. The rest can be used to pay off the car loan if it's at a high interest rate, or simply be invested.

What should one take from this? That small cap value might be better in taxable than VTI/ITOT if it's part of your AA already? Or should be VTI/ITOT still be preferred?

FZROX is a fine fund in tax-advantaged accounts, but I would be wary to own it in a taxable one for reasons that have been mentioned. Your (a) point is an immaterial one. Dividends are not free money so that money is still being utilized by the company that would have been paid out to you. You should favor lower dividends in taxable funds anyway.

Psychologically, people who have a windfall feel compelled to spend it. Resist that temptation. If nothing else, this windfall may allow you to retire early or it might tide you over during a difficult time. I wouldn't be taking extra out to spend it, just to shift to taxable. Currently, I am making roughly 70K pre-tax and maxing out my Roth IRA, HSA and TSP (401k equivalent) which made my tax bracket go down to 12%, after the standard deduction. I then took out more from more inherited IRA up to the 22% bracket. This year, I will be transferring to another agency for a promotion making close to 90K in the DC area, where I plan to live in VA.
