Re: On the video games path - how to set it up with younger kids

If you want to get more family friendly stuff, go with Nintendo. As another mentioned, a big issue can be voice chat on multiplayer games, though I would bet there are parental controls where you could disable that. With Nintendo, their online is so bad they do not even have a voice chat option. Also, the games are more family friendly in general. Also, I would probably let the kid figure out what games they want. If you don't know much about gaming, your likely to make some really bad choices. Interesting to see how anti-gaming this forum is though. In my opinion, as long as you exercise good balance, they are fine. I think people look back and see how much time they wasted on video games and IF they would have done something else it would...

Re: International Equity: Are managed funds better than Index funds?

I've been using mutual fund screeners on Morningstar and reading about ETFS there as well. I haven't been impressed with Vanguard's basic International index funds (VEA, VEU) and neither has Morningstar. Sure they're cheap. But, the performance and quality of management of some mutual funds seem very attractive. I especially like the sound of something like FMIJX which is currency hedged. I wrote a couple of them down: FMIJX (currency hedged) http://www.morningstar.com/funds/xnas/fmijx/quote.html TROSX http://www.morningstar.com/funds/xnas/trosx/quote.html OAKIX http://www.morningstar.com/funds/xnas/oakix/quote.html What do you think? There seems to be more off topic posts than years past. Things like "What books/TV shows/movies/foods do you like?" and "Recommendations needed for garbage bags". Which would be fine, if there was an off-topic board so I could filter them out.

Many other questions that are somewhat on topic get posted which could literally be answered by the first google search result. http://www.lmgtfy.com

And then there are the humblebrag posts such as "I'm 28 and I make $300k/year and I have $2.5M at Vanguard, am I behind???"

So it does seem the signal-to-noise ratio is decreasing.

I have the Acer chromebook 11, got it for 90 bucks via Slickdeals. I have actually put Ubuntu on it, but it wasn't really useful. Only 2gb RAM and 16 gb ssd. Chrome browser can almost use 2 GB RAM itself.

A higher tier chrebook would be great, but when you start getting to 8 GB RAM and >64 gb storage I'm not sure the price is there yet.

Hi all, I am in the market for a laptop, the one I have is pretty beaten up at this point and a bit bulkier than I would like. I am looking for some suggestions on a laptop to buy. I have a chromebook, and really like it for what it is, but I also want a laptop with a bit more power. I don't need much space, I would be happy with a total of 128GB SSD. I would like to have at least 8 gigs of RAM. I will also want to have a full OS on it (ubuntu). I want a laptop that is kind of like a hybrid between a chromebook and a decently powered laptop. I'd prefer a small laptop, 11-13in screen would be ideal, 14" maximum. The thinner/lighter the bette, but I wouldn't mind it being thicker for a better battery life. Re: John Bogle Has Been Right About Investing In International Stocks

What I mean by confusing strategy with outcome is that Bogle's recommendation for no international stocks is not proved to be a good strategy (even in 1993 without the benefit of knowing how it would turn out) simply because it worked well for the specific years 1993-2017 for a US-based investor. The fact it is not a good strategy is proved by the case of the Japanese investor. Which again, no one in this thread has attempted to tackle. It makes me go "hmmmm". If the strategy says that holding the ex-US index produces good results in the long run, then we have proof here that refutes that. 24 years is long term for all practical purposes, and the strategy didn't work. It's not any more complicated than that. With the US index, on...

Re: John Bogle Has Been Right About Investing In International Stocks

I am astonished that people are arguing Jack Bogle was right and that Taylor was correct to post this. Obviously, "right" is referring to making the right decision. If someone goes to vegas and puts their house on red and wins, would you say they made the right decision? Of course not, that was a terrible decision.

This was such a superficial and baseless argument I expect Taylor to come on and say his account was hacked by Jim Cramer. It could be very damaging for someone of Taylor's renown to make a post like this.

No. He hasn't. At least, not by the evidence offered in your post, which is not logic that should be promoted by a member of this forum that a good number of readers look to for advice. By your logic, the "right" investment is simply the one that offers the best return. So everyone in 1993 should have just bought stock in Apple. That's essentially what you're telling people.

+1. This is a serious case of confusing outcome with strategy. I am actually in shock at the OP of this thread . Now we are in even a worse situation. We have the one at the top advocating something illogical, and another one near the top justifying it based on past returns.

Re: Can anyone convince me I need international stock in my portfolio?

My mixed portfolio is insurance to buffer the risk of a big, long domestic crash, at a cost that is acceptable to me. The problem is that it doesn't work this way - the US market and economy have a huge impact on others... When the US catches a cold, ex-US catches a flu or even pneumonia. It's very hard to justify putting money in the ex-US index - it has performed poorly for decades now, shown little earnings growth, it's volatile, subject to mercurial currency fluctuations, and it doesn't shield you from domestic crashes. I've stayed away from it in the 20+ years that I've been investing, and it's one of the few investment decisions that I never regretted even with the benefit of hindsight. It would have been a drag both financially and ...

Why do so many people think we need it, and what is the reason, other than just speculation? The onus is not on those who believe in holding a market-cap weighted portfolio of stocks to prove you need international, but rather on those who believe you should deviate from market weight. The demand should not be, "convince me I need international stocks" anymore than one would ask others to convince them only to invest in company's companies beginning with letters A through M. The question should be, "Is there a reason not to include international stocks in proportion to their market weight?" IMO, Bogle's suggestions on percentages to hold are worthless. Personally, if he has made that money himself and he has contributed to your household as he has been required, I would be hard pressed to find a good excuse to stop him. Re: Active Manager Uses Lessons From Vanguard to Resist Passive

One could argue that Total World provides greater diversification since it owns almost 8,000 stocks compared to about 1,300 owned by Global Equity. Global Equity's expense ratio is 0.30% higher than Total World's. With that many holdings it's probably just a closet index fund. If you want broad diversification, invest in an index fund or a factor/smart beta fund unless you have a liking for passive funds with active fees. Keep fees low (ER of 0.30) and turnover low and you've got a fighting chance. I would argue that active share is more important than ER. The more different/concentrated an active fund is, the more odds of outperformance. You will not outperform if you look like the market. However, keeping costs low is still a good rule o...

Re: Pet insurance for new puppy

Long time pet owner here and we love our dog. He truly is a member of the family. Pet health care is pretty simple really and there is no need for insurance. We pay everything out of pocket. If we got to the point where our vet bill was being measured in thousands of dollars, euthanasia would become a serious part of our discussion. If you are financially in a situation where routine vet bills is a financial drain, you cannot afford the pet. Above the routine pet care, you should have some sense for how much you are willing to spend to save your pet. Up your emergency fund by that amount. It's not a question of patriotism as much as how one interprets the data. One can say that the U.S.'s superior long-term performance is already 'acknowledged in market prices', but this does not explain why the U.S. premium has persisted for so long. My biggest beef with those saying U.S. equities should not perform any better than the rest of the world i...

Re: Tesla Solar Roof

I really want one, but just doesn't seem financially worth it yet. May just opt to buy a solar panel at some point.
