Re: Retirement Checkup - Physician nearing end of Training

A word of caution : agree not to count chickens before they hatch First job after fellowship frequently ends in disaster . Mine did . It sounds like salesmen are getting to you . You didn't need to spend 40 k to get your spouse "reliable" transportation After years of delayed gratification ... stay ...

However , is that trademarked so I can't ? 2) 60/40 3) stay the course 4) dollar cost average What do...

Re: Discussing investing with spouse

Some people just want to be told what to do and don't care to learn about investments. They're just not interested, and you can't make them change. So simplify your accounts as best you can now and leave your wife a letter containing detailed, step-by-step instructions on what to do after your death...

on your raft trip to the coast, absolutely avoid the front left seat. You have to hold on for dear life. It's the worst seat in the house, even the captain agreed with me

Re: Private school? Any regrets?

After my wife and I have both attended public schools , state universities and gone on to become physician specialists , we are quite comfortable with our 3 kids all attending public schools. Along the way , I have met people who attended public school in Detroit and went on to the Ivy League and ca...

Re: be my mother in law's financial advisor...or not?

THANKS for all of the posts. I really appreciate them, especially the one about "guilt" , that I shouldn't feel guilty. This was my first post, and the insightful responses have enlightened me. My mother in law did NOT re-approach me. She likes the prompt reply her current advisor gives he...

be my mother in law's financial advisor...or not?

I'm a mid forties, a patented boglehead....... perfectly fine with three fund portfolio and indexing, vanguard principles. My mother in law is late 60's, not healthy ( diabetic, morbidly obese) and knows next to nothing about investing and , I can say quite confidently, never will. She came to me 8 ...

Re: Physician Specialists Looking for career advice

plus 1 to what lowER posted earlier. NEVER take on debt to "buy in" to a group. If the hospital up the road opens a new center to compete with you, you're done! completely agree don't buy a house (rent), don't buy the sports car, etc until you're comfortable you will be there long term. I ...

Re: Have any of you overextended on housing? What were your experiences?

overextending on housing was probably the worst financial decision of my life. First "real" doctor job in 2006. Buy a house, sign a contract with a hospital. Shortly thereafter, hospital merges with another hospital and closes the cancer center. Take a huge hit after finally giving up on t...

boy, I'm in my mid forties after finishing fellowship in 2006. I've always been an employed physician, sorry I don't know how to answer your questions which are great questions. I just don't have the experience of running a practice! Do your homework. Plus, boards are coming up? ( maybe two sets for...

Re: Medical School preparation Pointers for a Sophomore Student

I finished undergrad in 1992, so as a 45 year old perhaps I'm outdated for some advice for a sophomore undergrad, but perhaps not! In my day , it was beneficial to take the MCAT in the spring . If you take it in the fall, the med school class is 75 percent full or so. The MCAT is the ONLY Test I hav...

It sounds like your kid's educations are completely paid for if you have 150 grand already for 3 kids aged 6,4,1, isn't it?
If others agree, I wouldn't contribute another cent to the kids 529 plans and would go on some nice vacations!
great job! :sharebeer

Re: Physician buying an 850k vs 1.25m house

the general theme of many replies in one of caution. I would strongly agree. My first physician "dream job" ended up being at a center which ceased to exist after not even two years on the job. Am I safe in assuming your contract has a 90 day exit clause for your employer? Agree with renti...
