Re: Investment condo in Florida

If you don’t mind, let me pose a question that may help you answer this question. How much do you feel you need each year to embrace the headache involved in being a landlord/investor?

I’ve been through the same exercise you are going through countless times and always come back to... rent.

Re: New York City Local Chapter established

Hi all, There is a NYC Bogleheads Google group here: https://groups.google.com/d/forum/boglehead-nyc It had regular meetings until the end of last year when the previous organizer stepped down. It'd be great if we could get them going again. I just sent around a Doodle poll for a weekend meeting in...

Re: New York City Local Chapter established

I know a great space for future meetings - 480 West 42nd Street, 2nd floor Signature Theatre Venue, which has a suitable area for us. It's spacious with bathrooms and an adjoining cafe (where you're not obliged to purchase anything ) Hey WhizKid, Have you ever used this location for anything before...

Re: New York City Local Chapter established

Hi Everyone,

I missed Mel's message, but have finally reached out to him.

My hope is to get something setup and have a gathering in the next 4-6 weeks. I wanted to gage interest and everyone's approx location. Venue suggestions can also be made.

Re: New York City Local Chapter established

I think it's important to keep the NYC chapter active.

I would be willing to take over if necessary. All I need is someone to reach out to me and give me a run down or let me know who to contact.

Re: What growth rate would you use?

Some of you guys really go out of your way to make everyone depressed about the future. If you're using 0% as the projected gain on your portfolio why wouldn't you just put all your money in TIPS and save yourself some heartache and stress for a decade :confused Also, saying it's impossible to pred...

Re: Cash Balance vs. Taxable

Would taxable investing (even at 45% fed/state) still make more sense? I would say it's all about risk tolerance... If you are comfortable with market risk, yes. Remember, you are never forced to sell while you are in the higher tax bracket. If you are looking for that elusive "risk free retur...

Re: Cash Balance vs. Taxable

However, investment fees (as well as fund eep ratios of approx 20 bps) are paid out of the plan according to this scale: Assets Under Management Annual Management Fee Up to $500,000 0.85% On the next $250,000 0.80% On the next $4,250.000 0.50% On the next $5,000,000 0.35% Over $10,000.000 0.25% Ok,...

Re: Am I crazy for seriously considering using FutureAdvisors?

I was in a similar boat (ahoy!). I opted not to use the FutureAdvisor service, for two reasons. 1. My time wasn't worth as much/or more then I was going to pay them. Unfortunately my time isn't worth 4K per hour. 2. Once you get things setup you only need a few hours throughout the year to maintain ...

Re: Feedback on Asset Allocation

I'll let others comments on your allocation. But here is something to consider. Due to its size (7% LT Growth), you may want to consider conducting your rebalance as you are adding to your portfolio to reach your target allocation. As opposed to "selling/harvesting", it might not be worth ...

Re: Cash Balance vs. Taxable

Question: Does it make sense to go ahead and invest in the cash balance plan at the assumed 3% interest rate? Do the numbers still make sense vs taxable investing at a predicted 5,6, or 7% real return? If you can remove market risk and actually achieve 3%, it sounds pretty good to me.... What is th...

Re: Annualized return of passive vs. active investments - 10 years

Quick question... Is the 5.52% before or after capital gains taxes? I ask because I think it matters. I did not take into account unrealized LT capital gains, but it does include realized capital gains on the relatively few sales. I thought this was reasonable when comparing to my passive investmen...

Re: Short-Term Fund, Thoughts Wanted

Any insight as to the pros (if any) and cons to using a fund to replace a savings account would be great. First of all, the historical return means absolutely nothing for a bond fund. Your expected return is the current SEC yield. Second, This fund will fluctuate in value, so it is not a great subs...

Short-Term Fund, Thoughts Wanted

I saw this somewhere else and after my initial thoughts, I haven't been able to wrap my head around weather it's a good idea or not. Short-Term funds, like the Vanguard Short-Term Bond Index vs. a savings account (i.e. Ally). The SEC yield is 1.33% https://personal.vanguard.com/us/funds/snapshot?Fun...
