Social Security: Collecting at 70

I have been among the few able to file and suspend Social Security until age 70, while my wife collects. Now I am approaching 70 and as I understand it at age 70 there is no further increase in benefit due to delayed credits, so it is time to begin collecting. How do I go about this? Do I need to co...

Need Advice on a Stair Lift

My wife and I are turning 70 and beginning to have problems getting up and down the stairs at our 3 story lake house. Although we don't quite need it yet we are considering installing a stairlift so we can continue to enjoy the place for years to come. Would appreciate any advice concerning good or ...

Re: Credit Collection help needed

As far as dealing with the collection agency, your credit is already impaired and it will not improve when you pay this so I would either just forget about it or offer them 10% of what you owe.

Re: Apply for Medicare B in person or mail in forms?

I guess it may depend on the specific local office involved but it took my wife and I multiple in person appointments to finally get on Part B. Even with an in person visit where a staff member assured us we were enrolled, we were not; a later visit to another staff member revealed that the first pe...

Bonds at an historic high; time to get out?

I am 68, semi-retired, and have 60% of my savings in bonds and bond funds. Since safety of principal is of primary importance I am staying away from all but short to intermediate term treasuries and high investment grade US corporates. However, as interest rates continue to fall and bond prices cont...

Re: Early retirees, at what age did you "retire"? Is it working out?

I retired at age 67 in January 2015 and it hasn't worked at all the way I hoped. After a year I found my IRA had gone steadily down in value, and we had neither the money or energy to do a lot of things we thought we might do. I was bored, but was lucky to find a part time job. Getting back back in ...

Re: Does everyone really need to save $1 million for retirement?

For a good 1/3 or so of people the only need is to have enough money to get to the 80's because at that point the dementia has taken a toll and they are quite content sitting in a chair and living off social security and Medicaid. All the money in the world wouldn't change their lifestyle.

Soc. Security File and Suspend Question

I am 68 and at my full retirement age (FRA) of 66 I went on "file and suspend" status in order to let my spouse collect on my record (which she did at her FRA of 66). Couple of related questions: 1. As I understand it my potential benefits will continue to increase by 8% plus any inflation...
