Enthusiast here. I have owned the following cars for less than $15k and even made money off some:
1995 BMW M3
2004 BMW M3
2002 Honda S2000
2015 Volkswagen GTI
2006 Porsche Cayman S

Next on the list is either a Cayman GT4 or Lotus Evora 400.

Did I do okay through my first bear?

At the age of 31 I had a portfolio balance of around 900k (85/15) at the start of the pandemic. After trying to calm down family members who later sold around all time highs, I wondered if I made the right decision to follow the boglehead philosophy and hold. Spraying brake parts cleaner on it will take it right out. Give it a try. I would recommend getting the non-chlorinated type, less noxious to the lungs.

Not sure if this has been suggested yet but you could find a clean example 996 Turbo for 50k. Extremely reliable with the Metzger engine and should appreciate in the future. Although I much prefer the 997 headlights, the 996 is starting to grow on me.

Massive realized capital losses for many people have happened before, notably in 2000 and 2008-2009. It turns out that they can get used up for tax purposes rather quickly because they offset realized capital gains. The deduction of up to $3,000 a year of realized losses against ordinary income is ...
