Little-used second home: sell at a loss or rent?

Six years ago my wife and I bought a vacation home located about 200 miles from our primary residence in the Midwest. The attraction of the vacation home was proximity to our several siblings and the option of moving there in retirement. For a variety of reasons, including changing family dynamics, ...

I read and found it superb -- thought provoking and well written. Great novel.

Re: mortgage pre payment, why?

Paying off the mortgage is only about half the cost of owning a home. Property taxes, insurance, and maintenance often exceed the mortgage payment. I lived mortgage-free for 15 years and never felt any richer for it. In fact, writing big checks once a year for taxes and interest made me feel poor on...

Re: Question for the Bogleheads Millionaires

Be willing to relocate for a better job. Twenty-five years ago, my wife and I, newly married, were getting ready to move into a custom-built house in our hometown. She got a terrific job opportunity located about a thousand miles away and asked me if she should accept it. I said, "when do we leave?"...

Roku 3 is terrific. Hulu/Amazon Prime/Netflix makes for a great bundle on it too.

Re: Self Directed IRA question

I wouldn't have expected that you could manage the property owned by your IRA. Isn't that a prohibited transaction, as providing services relating to the IRA's property? You are allowed to be the "decision maker": https://www.biggerpockets.com/blogs/5105/37558-can-i-be-the-property-manager-for-my-i...

Re: U.S. stocks in freefall

If one has years to work before retirement, then I completely agree with most here that contributing as much as one can each month with the use of index funds and "ignoring the noise" is the way to go. What is not so easy if one, like me, has just retired and is sitting on (for me) sizable investmen...

Re: Self Directed IRA question

Many people like to think they are smarter than the market and can get rich quick. The market and the IRS are both unforgiving. Like most things sold to investors, these self-directed accounts are for the benefit of the seller and not the buyer. A truly smart person stays away from any products sol...

Re: Self Directed IRA question

I opened a self-directed IRA with Equity Trust, moving about 20 percent of my retirement assets into the account in 2008 during the housing downturn. I bought 3 rental properties and have netted about $2.5k a month in rental income. I budget one-third of the monthly $4k income for property taxes, in...

Re: Renting forever: financial suicide?

Housing is never really paid for, even if there is no mortgage. I couldn't agree more. I had a 30-year mortgage and paid it off in 10 about 6 years ago. Yet taxes and insurance were so high that I never really felt I had paid it off. Very much a disappointment. I have owned a half dozen homes and c...

Re: profitable hobby?

It seems that everybody who plays poker for a hobby is "profitable", which is, um, interesting. My hobby is betting on thoroughbred horse races, and it is definitely NOT a profitable hobby. :(
