Re: Angies List v. Homeadvisor v. ???

I've had good luck with checkbook.org . It's only available in certain areas, though.

Re: Buy a car or repair the old one

Are you sure it's a head gasket? Depending on the shape of the rest of the car, I might think about diagnosing the leak. I assume you have checked for coolant leaks under the car? A pressure test may show where coolant is leaking. Maybe you've done that, and see no external leaks? Do you see evidenc...

Re: Flaunt Your High-Mileage Car

1996 Subaru Outback, just turned 300k. I bought it in 1999 with 100k on it. At 192k it blew a head gasket and I ended up replacing both heads. Timing belt every 60k, I think, which is expensive. If I still have it at 310k, I may do the timing belt myself this time. I'll be happy if it gets me throug...

Re: Inherited variable annuity - change custodian?

Thanks, everyone. It looks like I'll keep it where it is. That seems to be the best of the available options.

The 5-year decision has already been made, so I'll just be happy it won't last any longer than that.

Regards,
JBB

Re: Inherited variable annuity - change custodian?

Thanks for the replies. I'll read up some more on variable annuities (and "in-force illustrations"). Regarding the 5-year deferral: My mother set up a trust but never funded it (she got lousy advice from a shady lawyer); the trust was the beneficiary of her annuity (and other accounts). In order to ...

Inherited variable annuity - change custodian?

My brother and I inherited a Roth IRA and a variable annuity when my mother died last year. The custodian (management company) charges 1.5%/year, so I'm thinking about moving the funds to another management company. I've spoken to Vanguard about this: I can move the Roth IRA to Vanguard, but the onl...

Re: Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2016!

Sign me up. My date is 1 April 2016 barring a huge drop in the stock market. I'm 54. My wife retires at the end of this year (she's 63). I decided to go another quarter - we thought this would be less scary than both of us jumping at the same time... Hi Joe, Welcome to the Forum ! Congratulations w...

Re: Taxes for estate, trust

To be honest, I don't know how complex it is. My plan is to use the accountant for 2015 and try to do 2016 taxes myself. I *think* that 2016 taxes will consist of: 1041 for my mother's trust (which should go away this year as it will be distributed to the 2 sub-trusts) 1041 for my trust 1041 for my ...

Taxes for estate, trust

I have some questions about taxes for my mother's estate. Wondering if anyone has experience and can advise. Background: My mother died last February, and created a trust. Upon her death, the trust is to be divided into 2 sub-trusts, one for me, and one for my brother. The estate is to be split 50/5...
