We live in another HCOL area. Our mortgage and day care costs are just a tad less than the DC numbers you cite. The only other significant kid expense I can think of aside from the crazy cost of day care is airfare to take the kids to see family on the other side of the country.

I'm planning on buying. Already maxing my I Bonds, so kind of a barbell approach between that and the long TIPS. I was originally looking at buying LTPZ instead but was scared off by the thin trading volume and the expense ratio.

I have never found a way to watch the local baseball team without cable, so dropping it is a non-starter for my spouse. I can watch my favorite team through mlb.tv (they have blackout restrictions that prevent watching the local team).

When I want to log in to TD, I edit the page's HTML to remove the readonly="readonly" attribute from the password input box and then copy/paste from my password manager software. It takes me only a bit longer than logging into any other site.

Earlier this year I mailed in some paper I bonds. It took eight days for them to be converted from the time that the USPS tracking showing they had arrived in TD's hands.

BECU also has easy early withdrawal of CD funds. You can withdraw all of a portion of a CD any time via their website with a penalty of 90 days' interest (I think 30 days on shorter term CDs). I use a 1.2% CD there for a second-tier emergency fund.

I have $250k in a 1.2% CD at my local credit union (minimal early withdrawal penalty). It's earmarked for a down payment on a house in 6-18 months. There is no way I'd risk investing it with that time horizon.

Taking standardized tests is absolutely a skill that requires practice. I got a lot of 800's on various SAT/GRE thingies but that was after extensive test preparation. When you're under the time pressure of a test, you can't afford to just rely on your smarts to help you figure things out as you go....
