Re: Defined Benefit Pension Question

How is it possible for the factor for 100% Joint & Survivor to be reduced from what it was in 2014 (0.814), when my wife will be 5 years older? As people age, the chances decrease that they will live any given number of years. Because of the way probabilities work, [*] the ratio between the probabi...

Re: Defined Benefit Pension Question

How is it possible for the factor for 100% Joint & Survivor to be reduced from what it was in 2014 (0.814), when my wife will be 5 years older? That's a great question. There's got to be an actuary around here somewhere to provide a good answer. Ask and you shall receive. However, Istone19 has alre...

Re: Defined Benefit Pension Question

You have to consider the two factors together. Let's say you basic amount (amount at full retirement age with a single life annuity) is $1,000. Had you retired in 2014, applying that 0.57519 would have meant the single life annuity at that point was $575.19. To then elect the 100$ J&S annuity would...

Re: Defined Benefit Pension Question

It makes sense to me. You haven't said how old you and your wife are but since you're now five years older, your life expectancy (in years remaining) is now lower. So the chance that the pension will continue beyond your death is higher. If your wife is younger, you are more likely to pre-decease h...

Re: Defined Benefit Pension Question

I retired from a MegaCorp that had a reduction if the married retiree delayed the defined benefit (corporate pension). This seemed counter intuitive to me (I thought it would increase), but MegaCorp explained if I passed before making a benefit election then my spouse would get the full pension, no...

Re: Defined Benefit Pension Question

I'm not an expert and I'm not sure exactly what your issue is but if the plan administrator uses a different (or revised) mortality table that can impact the benefit payable. There may be a number of different ways that certain plan provisions may be interpeted. If there has been a change in plan a...

Defined Benefit Pension Question

I have been having difficulty in getting my old employer to provide the correct information to Fidelity for my vested pension, as Fidelity is now the retirement plan administrator. After several months, the correct years of service and the correct unreduced retirement date have been acknowleged by m...
