Re: When do electric cars stop making sense?

We (ok, me) really wanted to buy an electric car. I've had two cars in the last 26 years - a 1997 Corolla and a 2009 Corolla. We looked at a lot of electric car models and didn't really get lit on fire by any of them to be honest. My biggest disappointment was the spartan and cheap feeling Tesla model 3 interior... sigh. In the end, I went with a 2024 Corolla XLE hybrid. 53 MPG around town and 50 MPG combined. I'm patiently waiting for the car to get through the allocation process to me, but I don't regret not getting the electric car. I thought I would as I really had my mind set on one for our next car.

Re: LMP/TIPS Ladder Pros & Cons Master Thread

What's the advantage of ibonds for delivering periodically known amounts of CPI adjusted cash flow starting now, in other words compared to a TIP ladder? Yields are lower than TIPS. You either pay lots of taxes at maturity or you can elect currently. If you're creating a ladder, taxes and cash flow will be similar to TIPS, just lower (both before and after taxes). Is your use case delaying taxes until maturity when you expect to be in a lower tax bracket? It's not either or in our case. We're using both TIPS in tax deferred, TIPS in taxable and I Bonds (at the current rate in particular). TIPS rates move - last fall they were higher than now, in December / January lower than now. The bulk of our I Bonds purchases at 1.3% fixed were made at...

Re: LMP/TIPS Ladder Pros & Cons Master Thread

A question is what to hold if you want the government guaranteed, CPI adjusted cash flow of a TIPS ladder and have already filled your TIRA with TIPS. The answer seems to be TIPS in taxable, realizing there's no tax bunny (so maintain a cushion) and that you may need a source to pay the tax on the inflation adjustment. I bonds come to mind. Issues include purchase limits and the much higher real yield on TIPS and there doesn't seem much of an advantage if you're looking for a known CPI adjusted annual cash flow starting now. Yes there are purchase limits, but they are easily overcome. We have purchased $145,000 of them in the last 4 months, for example. The question raised was about options for taxable and I bonds are an option. Perhaps th...

I wore them to work 4 days a week until COVID and sparingly since then, but the uppers look practically brand new (save for a new pair of shoelaces). Every component used to make the shoe was sourced in the USA.

Yes, we often do this for gas purchases and typically save 10 to 14 cents a gallon in our area. A number of one-off restaurants charge 3% for credit cards (or have minimum purchases). My car dealership charges 3% for service paid with credit card.

We are using I bonds as part of our liability matching portfolio between early retirement and Social Security. We opened revocable living trusts in December, 2023 (using Willmaker software + $5 notary fee each) to purchase $20,000 additional and $20,000 more this year. Regarding the gift box, we have purchased 4 additional years each in the gift box and are debating a 5th. Five years out is as far as we feel comfortable going to take advantage of the 1.3% rate. YMMV.

Re: I-Bonds as Part of Bridge--Gift Box Now or Continue with Annual Purchases?

We are utilizing the gift box to take advantage of current rates, however, we have decided to limit future purchases to 5 years. We also opened revocable living trusts in December, 2023 to purchase an additional $20,000. We will purchase another $20,000 later this month in our trusts. In our case, now that TIPS rates have dropped a bit, this allows us to replace a few TIPS ladder rungs in taxable that required future reinvestment to cover gap years. This simplifies things for those rungs - no reinvestment required - with an added benefit that we can reduce our taxable TIPS holdings and shift a few of those rungs into tax deferred I bonds (not to try and convince you about a ladder). We decided a lot can happen in 8 years, for example, so 5 ...

Re: 2023 Prius Prime - $4,500 Lease Cash Offer - how does this compare to paying cash?

I hope to add more to this thread on Tuesday evening. If the car arrives at the dealership on time, I'll be driving 2 hours to the next state (a zero emissions state - they seem to get more allotments from Toyota) to purchase a 2024 Prius Prime SE with no market price adjustment and $4,500 lease cash. I plan to buy out the lease, but even with the additional lease fees, I'll be ahead by doing the lease vs outright buy. It took a ton of searching, dealing with nonsense like "we have gotten one all year and we will only sell it to buyers within 20 miles of the dealership", $5k markups over Toyota suggested price and cars loaded with $3k of stuff worth $200 by the dealership, etc.

Fingers crossed for no last minute bait and switch!

Re: Exact value of Series I US Savings Bond special features?

Yes, we place a positive value on a number of the I Bond special features. For example, with the drop in TIPS rates, we made the decision to sell two rungs of our taxable TIPS LMP ladder, realize the capital gain (which we have carry forward loses to offset) and move that money into I Bonds. Between expanding tax advantaged space, deflation protection, ability to redeem the bond at current value regardless of what interest rates do and the reduction in tax drag now while in a high tax bracket, we place a value of a 0.25-0.50% on those features (an amount that we read here in a few threads like this one that feels about right to us). That means when rates are within 0.25-0.50% of say the 5 year TIPS vs. I Bond, we're OK with buying the I Bon...

Re: I Bonds Mega Thread (I Bond Heads Rejoice!)

Potentially an obvious question, but why one would even care about I-bonds if one can buy TIPs instead that do not have a $10k limit? I feel that for some $10k is not money "to care for" ie the amount is too small (again, for some people). In part because you can easily make that $10k into $25k ($10k individual account, $10k trust, $5k tax return) for an individual or $45k per year for a couple ($20k individual accounts, $20k individual trusts, $5k tax return). You can go even higher than that leveraging the gift box., but the $25k individual / $45k couple per year is something that can be done year after year. Not unlimited, but a good bit more than $10k. Many people don't have a brokerage option to buy TIPS in a 401k, for examp...

We gave a down payment gift for my niece when she bought her first home. We also worked around the gifting limits. Her real estate attorney had us sign a document indicating that the gift was just that - a gift and not a loan and that no repayment would be required now or in the future, etc. We gave the gift funds well in advance of closing so that they could be available at closing. It did require a few phone calls for her to coordinate with the attorney / lender, but for us, it was just writing a check, reviewing the one page legal document and signing it.

Look up your maturity date, scroll all the way to the right for the OID of a single bond (e.g. $1,000 face value). You'll just have to multiply that value by the number of bonds you own for each TIPS. Since you owned the bonds for the entire year, it should be all you need.

This is model specific. How much of a subsidy are you expecting in $ / year? Also, if you have enough IRA space, couldn't you keep the TIPS in IRA, let them mature, sell stocks in taxable, and re-buy stocks in IRA? That way you don't have to withdraw anything and you're not paying a yearly tax drag on the TIPS You'll still have income, but at least the taxes would be LTCG, the savings of which might compare more favorably to the ACA subsidy We are expecting a subsidy of approximately $12,000 per year. We don't have enough room for the TIPS in traditional IRAs. Our traditional IRAs are already 100% individual TIPS. Neither of our 401k's offers a brokerage option and one of the 401k's doesn't even offer a TIPS fund. We've reduced the tax drag on the taxable TIPS by...

Yes. Inflation would need to be 9% or above annually before the taxes due would consume the planned subsidy value. While that may happen for a year, happening for the full 11 year period is unlikely (at least that's what we have bet on). We will know for sure at the end of the period...
