Re: Have you ever replaced a perfectly fine car just because?
What is your savings rate %? I assume it's high based on your purchase anxiety. If so, you can obviously afford it. If you think it will bring you joy, I would do it.
Even though I consider myself a car guy, I'm chugging along in a 10 yr old Hyundai. It's definitely one of the lesser cars in our neighborhood. Spouse is encouraging me to get a new car, but I mostly telecommute so I think it would be a waste for me.

Re: How did you decide your comfortable annual expense?
Earlier in our careers when we weren't making that much, we aimed to live a simpler lifestyle. We didn't have a specific savings rate % in mind though.
When I look back at old spreadsheets, I'm amazed how little we spent early in our marriage.
Now that we're making much more, we've drastically increased vacation spending. Our present savings goals are 1/3 of gross. We are happy with our balance of enjoying life now and saving for the future.

We've had Ring for over 3 years and have been happy with it. It works well with our Ring outdoor security cameras.
The only thing my spouse doesn't like is that the alarm isn't as loud as our previous traditional system.

I've signed up for both Monarch Money and Quicken Simplifi. Both seem to work well so far, but I don't like Simplifi's interface at all. So I am likely choosing Monarch going forward. FYI Monarch is doing 50% off as their Black Friday promotion.
I like Monarch's interface, and the overall functionality reminds me of Mint. The one Mint feature I do miss is seeing your upcoming credit card bill payments.

Is someone else on your team doing your work for you while you are gone? Or does your work pile up and wait for you?
I'm at a megacorp with a pretty generous PTO policy, and we never have issues taking time off. And it's frowned upon to make people work while on vaca. But typically nobody else on the team is able to do your work, so you still end up doing the vast majority of it when you are back in office.
I think there would be more issues if your peers had to pick up your slack for you.

Hello fellow Wolverine,
Our financial stats are similar. As long as you aren't targeting early retirement, I would go ahead and do it.
We spent just under $100k doing our backyard living space this year. We did a screened porch with vinyl windows and a mini-split unit, with an uncovered space also (for a future grill). We love it so far, and have no regrets spending that much. Our downstairs area isn't huge, so my wife enjoys having this additional space when entertaining.

We had Google Nest at our last home, and Ring at our current home. I prefer Google Nest, as it records 24/7. However, you need outlets to get the 24/7. Ring is more flexible as you can do batteries or solar. However, I find the motion notifications aren't as good as I would like.

The new Bose Ultra in-ear buds came out this week, and the reviews have been really good. The consensus is that it's the best noise cancelling earbud, and the new spatial audio features are getting great reviews as well. The main negatives seem to be no multi-point bluetooth, and no wireless charging case included (you can pay extra to get one). I plan to pick up a pair of these soon.

I've bought a huge amount of athleisure/WFH clothes over the past 2-3 years. My main criteria is clothing that is very soft. There are some companies that are making super soft fabrics these days. My favorites right now:
Vuori
Myles Apparel
Mack Weldon
Tasc performance
Sticker prices are high, but you can get deals via sign-up coupons or sale sections.

Re: Kid friendly, all inclusive resort in Mexico/Caribbean? Feb 2024
We've done a lot of all-inclusives over the years, and Riviera Maya/Cancun area definitely provides the best value for your money. There are a ton of resorts, so plenty of pricing competition. Caribbean islands have fewer options so they can charge whatever (e.g. Beaches Turks). Also, depending on where you live, Cancun flights tend to have more availability and lower prices than flights to Caribbean islands.
My main negative is that the beaches there are mediocre at best. If you place a high priority on clear water and big beaches, you will want to look elsewhere.

Since you plan on working another 20 yrs, I think you are perfectly fine with your spending level. Your savings level is still quite solid. Financial Samurai says the top 1% has a 38% savings rate, so you aren't too far off.
Do you find yourself regretting the purchases you make? If not, then I wouldn't worry too much about it.
We have a similar HHI and NW as you. Though our spending isn't as high as yours, we do still spend a lot. I don't feel guilty about it, since we are hitting our savings goals.

I know this is just one data point but wanted to add in. My spouse did psychology undergrad, and worked briefly at a bank in a lower-end job after graduation. With the proliferation of internet radio apps, Podcasts, and even service like Amazon Prime that let you download entire albums for free, why people pay for radio service is beyond me. X2 and there are allot more now 6+ years after your post. Streaming is acceptable if you listen to the same station, album, or podcast during your entire drive. But if you like to cycle through music genres, nothing beats sat radio. Touching your phone while driving is illegal in my state, so being able to use your steering wheel buttons is vital. Free streaming apps let you set genres and cycle through all hands free. as well as thousands of podcasts. SO has SiriusXM and I see no benefit. How does this hands-free cycling occur? Via voice control? I doubt it...

The screen is to protect vs bugs, and the windows are for protection vs pollen and heavy rain. We are really looking forward to it as extra entertaining space as well, as our main floor isn't that large.

Re: Shouldn't lifestyle creep be accepted?
We've definitely engaged in lifestyle inflation as our income has risen. I've also found that I spend less time looking for the absolute best deal (I used to live on Slickdeals.net). Like others have stated, if you can save around 1/3rd of gross, you are doing quite well (assuming you aren't aiming to retire very young).
Honestly, my biggest concern with lifestyle inflation is that we are spoiling our kids. We don't spoil them with material items, but we do go on a lot of nice vacations. And we aren't going to stay at a budget motel just because we want to give them a life lesson.
