Not young and didn't read all the responses. We are replacing some appliances and the local store said if we pay with a check vs CC it saves us $. I assume this is the 3% charge, but I wasn't at the shop with my DW spoke with them.
Guess we'll miss out on some airline miles?

Re: Should I be happy paying msrp for a subaru 2024?
Nearby and am familiar with the NorCal market. I hate paying MSRP, but did so on the last new car purchase I made on a 2023 model. The car I want has a $20K premium on top of MSRP and needless to say I haven't paid it.
Not familiar with 2024 Subarus specifically, but MSRP seems to be the norm lately for car dealers around this area. I'm sure you could save some money by shopping around and playing dealers off each other. Not sure how much you would save.
TLDR: Happy? No. Might have to pay MSRP? Yes.

Been a while since I've been on this site.

Found a pair of my old favorites that I thought were discontinued...
$400. Never go cheap on work shoes...buy Italian...I spend too much time in them to be uncomfortable.

Regular west maui visitors...
Some of our favorites I didn't see mentioned:
Kimos--our favorite place in Lahaina.
Sansei--great sushi (though I agree with above getting poke at the store is much cheaper and what we do more of).
Gazebo--located at Napili shores. Long line for breakfast, but you can order take out after the first hour they are open. The fried rice is the best.
Mirriman's--great fancy dinner/location, if you can get a reservation.
Maui Tacos--multiple locations
Honolua store--walk up/take out. Great spot if you are up at Napili or Kapalua area.

Having flown to Hawaii, Europe, Africa, and across the US multiple times in the last 5 years, I'm not flying anywhere over a 6 hour or so flight unless it is business class+ with lay flat seats. The lounges alone are almost worth the cost. If it is personal I would rather stay home than suffer in coach. If it is for business the client can pay for it.

From her Iphone, she made one transfer(6K) from Vanguard brokerage to ROTH then another one from bank(6K) to Roth, now showing 12K in Roth money market account and both settled in on 1/4/2021. I see how this could happen on Vanguards website when we did our 2021 contributions. Moving $6K into an IRA from a brokerage account was completely different from making our 2021 IRA contribution...though the look very similar. The only difference was the source of funds step. I've been making this contributions for years, and this was the first time I've seen this "glitch" so I wouldn't be too hard on her. I assume like other posters have said, she'll just have to get Vangaurd to reverse the $6K from the brokerage account, but I would have...

My first thought would be valve stems. I'd start there with a reputable tire shop. If you really want to "diagnose the problem" yourself you could get out the soapy water and look for the leaks.

Re: How to teach your kids about money/wealth
Start now...
3 piggy banks: "spending" "saving" and "giving"
Our kids learned very early on that a large portion if not most of the money they get (spare change, gifts in cards, etc.) should go into the savings bank.
Both our kids are great savers. We laugh that they both have more money than we did when we were first married.
Edit: we also, instead of buying them things (e.g. "can I have this?" at the store), we gave them an allowance and made them pay for those types of things themselves. They learned quickly when it is "their" money, they no longer wanted things as bad.

They make $100K+ annually.
You identified maybe $54K in annual expenses.
They have a son who is willing to help out with expenses.
Questions
1. Am I overreacting? How bad is the situation?
2. If you were in my situation, what would you do?
1. Probably. Not as bad as a lot of others.
2. Stop worrying so much. Decide if you really want to bail them out if something bad happens.

That said, I doubt I would take back a $100 item like a blow dryer. I guess my expectations of "cheap" electronics like that are not the same.

We have a Subi outback and the snow tires are awesome. We have dedicated wheels/tires for the winter. I was blown away how much of a difference it makes. We just bought another full size SUV and plan to buy new wheels and snow tires for it as well. Simply not worth not having when hauling the family around. I have an extremely clean high mileage ten year old Lexus with a clean CarFax that would likely go to auction. I've only bought one car through CarMax and I was not able to negotiate a better price. I think generally their prices are a little higher (for buying) and lower (for selling) than one can do through private party. That said, it was a pretty painless process and for people who want to save time/effort it is a decent place to buy a vehicle. On a related topic, if you do decide to sell private, how do ...

I tried the inexpensive/practical/economy car thing for a while. Meh, I'll drive what I want and work a few extra months at the end if I have to. Just got back into a full size luxury SUV and love it.

Re: Will you pay for your kids' college/graduate education?
Wow! So many diverse viewpoints. Need to find time to go back and review them all. But to answer the question... Put us in the "most likely" category: I always assumed no. I received an athletic scholarship for undergrad and paid my way through graduate school and law school. Wife always assumed yes. Her parents paid for her schooling for both undergrad and graduate school. At some point in the last few years we just decided to pre-pay tuition for instate school expenses. So the basics are already covered. We sort of view that as a supplemental insurance plan if something should happen to us. We plan to reach the FI state of FIRE by the time the first kid goes to college, so presumably we will pay for any shortcomings with cashflo...

Re: I dont know how to spend money
Maybe start with not washing your clothes in a sink in order to save $5-$10?
Is that per load or per month?
There is a difference between being frugal and being cheap.

Re: Frequency of Mega Backdoor IRA Transfers
Once a year. Vanguard requires it to be done manually via snail mail (or at least they do with my plan). I'm too lazy to do it any more than that.

Re: What is/ was your career and would you recommend it now?
Attorney here, I cannot recommend it to anyone unless they can graduate with less than, say, $50k in debt. I was a "winner" - top 3 law school, biglaw job, and paid off my 200k in student loans in 3.5 years. Now I have a job that I really love working in the public sector for a solid middle class income. You do not know pressure until you have to come up with that NONDISCHARGEABLE student debt nut every month during the great recession. Law is not for everyone - even most - in that it adversarial, high pressure, and mostly terrible hours. Look at the rates of alcoholism and divorce among most attorneys. It does allow poly sci idiots (like myself) a chance to hit it big in plaintiffs work - but that's a lot of hustle. If you have ...

Re: Large Personal Injury Settlement
You joined yesterday and posted today. That $3M, that sounds like you haven't even received, is not going anywhere fast. Unless of course you connect with an unscrupulous advisor or blow it on unscrupulous behavior. I suggest you take a deep breath and spend some time reviewing some of the links posted above and take the next 6 months to a year to figure out if/how you want to spend/invest it. You have a long runway, don't rush the takeoff.

Re: 2018 401k limit is $55K - do you max it out? Why/why not?
Do you? Yes. $18.5K pre tax + company match + whatever is left over to the cap into post tax...post tax portion, and any gain, is rolled over into a roth IRA once a year.
Why? All tax advantaged accounts are maxed. This allows us to maximize the annual contributions to a roth IRA beyond the $11K. If we need money for kids' college expenses we can use the money, if not we'll enjoy it in retirement.

Sounds like a good excuse to head to Florida and take your neighbors a bottle of wine to share at their BBQ celebrating their rebuilt home?

Hmmmm? This seems odd.
Surprise it wasn't mentioned yet...make sure you're turning it the right way.

Re: Picking up New Subaru-Worth buying extended warranty?
If you do, do not buy through your dealer. There is a dealer in the midwest that sells extended warranties for subaru at a steep discount. If you intend to buy one, send me a PM and I'll go dig out the name for you. Plus you do not have to buy it right now, you can always add it later.
I generally do not buy extended warranties, but we bought it for our subaru, that we bought used. It was relatively inexpensive through this dealer and provides plenty of piece of mind through ~100K miles.

Re: Daughter and Girlfriend, age 19, taking cross country road trip. Advice?
Lots of advice above. One thing I did not see mentioned is a device like SPOT.
I come across a lot of people (at the risk of offending some...particularly those from the east coast) who do not realize how remote the west can be. I've gone days without cell coverage...then again, when we go out we try to get away from people. Maybe, they'll stick to the more populated areas, maybe not?

Re: Renting out home with Swimming pool
Unless you do not want the pool when you return, I'm not sure I would go through the trouble of filling it in. Don't rely on google for a legal analysis. Lawyer up on the rental agreement, waiver, etc. Additional insurance is probably a good idea. I might be more concerned about leaving the house sitting empty with a pool that is not empty, then I would be renting it.
