Re: wide lace up work boots

My fat feet are quite comfortable in Redwing boots. Check out a local dealer. Worth the money.

Re: Attn: Social Security Experts **question**

I will turn 70 in May. I had planned to visit the local SSA office in April to apply, with the first payment hitting my account in July. I am currently on an overseas business trip and due to the Covid-19 situation all airline flights into/out of the region are cancelled. Not worried about my health...

Re: Best way to regularly (auto) e-Transfer funds to someone else’s bank account?

My credit union’s “transfer money “ page allows me to set up a recurring payment to an account at another financial institution via a no cost ACH transfer. I have used it continuously for over four years without a problem. Money is sucked out of my checking account on the 25th and three days later i...

Re: MetLife Group Variable Universal Life Insurance (GVUL)

Be careful about the “portability” claim. I have a met life vgul policy that is portable at rates that are double the employee rates. Many of my coworkers were unpleasantly shocked to find this out when they were laid off. My recommendation is take what your employer offers as it is still a bargain ...

Re: Snow Plowing

I have a 32 inch 12 hp two stage John Deere walk behind snowblower. I do my 300 foot driveway myself.
In late fall I ask my neighbors if they mind if I clear their driveways. Happy to say they have all given me permission to clear their drives!! At age 68 I suspect it is too late to outgrow this.

Probably odd for a fairly conservative Republican, but my favorite novel is The Jungle by Upton Sinclair.

Re: Availability of parking at Shade Grove Metro Station (D.C) around 9am tomorrow?

Drive to Frederick. There is a MARC train/Express bus station behind the Target store. Plenty of parking (870 spaces). You can take a MARC train to Union Station in DC but it took 90 minutes last time I checked. You can take express bus to Shady Grove Metro station. Rush hour services only but it su...

Re: How much to tip movers?

Recently moved from Maryland to Florida. About 12,000 pounds. Went with a big name national moving company. The packing/loading crew in Maryland were full time, year round employees of the local agent. They did a super job and we tipped each of them $40. They were extremely grateful and mentioned th...

Re: Recommendations - Swimming Pool - Solar Cover

Central Maryland near PA border. 24,000 gallon 16x32 irregular shaped pool. For 20 years have used blue tinted bubble wrap solar covers. 1) Solar cover extends the swimming season by 3 to 4 weeks in spring and fall 2) Solar cover reduces evaporation (and the need for make-up water) and chemical use ...

Re: Using 25-30 year old EE bonds to fund 529

I am not sure of the 529 implications, but have you checked to make sure the bonds are still earning interest? The 1986 bonds may be up against their final maturity dates.

Re: Grass trimmer

I second bds3's opinion. I have a mix of Stihl and Echo equipment for my yard work - hedge trimmer, chain saws, string trimmer, leaf blower. Not a problem with any of them in over 10 years of heavy use. My string trimming needs are pretty demanding - 150' of driveway, 300' of street frontage, multip...

Re: Off to Australia - need advice

I made over 20 trips to Oz in a little more than 3 years. I much prefer Brisbane to Sydney - Sydney is a great, world class city but it is first and foremost a big city. Brisbane is much smaller and livable. There are free public swimming lagoons on the South Bank. A short walk to Kangaroo Point the...

Re: Riding Lawn Mower

I mow 2.5 acres weekly April-September using a 16hp Kubota with 48 inch deck. Zero turns were just catching on when I bought it. I have borrowed neighbors' zero turns a few times and must say they are vastly superior. They have 54 inch decks and do a better looking job in a fraction of the time. Go ...

Re: Where to retire in Florida?

I grew up in the suburbs of Washington DC and spent most of my life there. I have also lived in southern Mississippi and the Tampa area. Frankly, the conditions during the dog days of summer are pretty much the same in all three places - 95 degrees and 80% humidity. The big difference in my opinion ...
