Re: Fun paid jobs after FIRE

My DW and I were able to quit both of our jobs last year after years of saving and investing. We had adopted many of the boglehead tenets without knowing of this site. After finding this amazing group of folks, we proceeded by posting our situation, educating ourselves and firing our advisor and ta...

Re: DELL Certified Refurbished woes

I've used the Dell refurbished service for years with no issues. Often, the unit will be brand new that experienced issues right out of the box. Dell typically replaces the original unit in these cases and "refurbishes" the faulty one, meaning a technician pores over it and ensures the glitch is cor...

Re: Netflix, Your Current Favorite Show

Top Gear (UK)

Only the last 5 seasons are on Netflix. If you want the rest, you can stream them on Hulu. Very entertaining TV.

Re: Serta iComfort / Tempurpedic - Buying a Mattress

We purchased a latex mattress several years ago. I built a platform base for it and we've been very satisfied so far. We opted for pure latex and there was some minor off gassing the first night. Our particular mattress allows you to select the relative firmness for each side of the bed by swapping ...

We did the "computer hooked to the tv" route for years. Recently upgraded to a Samsung smart tv. Very easy to set up and use.

Re: Should I tell my advisor to take a hike?

Thanks for all the input. I still haven't decided which way I'll go, but I thought I'd share a back of the envelope chart I put together at the end of last year to see how my portfolio was doing relative to my options in the TSP. Compound annual return 2007 to 2014: Before Fees are taken out: 66.01%...

Re: Should I tell my advisor to take a hike?

0.5% for DFA funds sounds awfully good. That, in addition to the fact that s/he's putting you in some Vanguard funds, suggests that this is one of the most upstanding advisors I've heard of. That's not to say that an upstanding advisor is better than no advisor; that's debatable and depends on the ...

Re: Should I tell my advisor to take a hike?

0.5% is a great price. Who in Alaska is offering that and using DFA funds? I'd like someone to refer readers to. I mean, if you don't need the advice, then yes, 0.5% is too much. But you're hardly being ripped off. Your proposed portfolio is fine, but keep in mind you'll be losing a lot of the bene...

Re: Should I tell my advisor to take a hike?

Very seldom would bogleheads say to stay with an advisor. Your plan looks fine, but why did you pick the S&P 500 instead of total stock market? S&P is fine, but bogleheads generally like total stock better. You might consider going with total stock market, and maybe adding the extended market index...

Should I tell my advisor to take a hike?

I’m a first time poster, but a long time lurker seeking advice on a possible change to our portfolio. My spouse and I currently have our accounts under the management of a fee-only advisor (approximately .5% AUM) and, while we are not unhappy with the service we have received from this advisor, we a...
