Re: Retiring at age 40 with $2.4M

Am I ready to retire at age 40 with $2.4M? My family needs no more than $8000/month. * I am currently renting in a HCOL area and I will keep renting until the kids graduate high school. Then we will move to a LCOL area and possibly buy a low priced home at that time. Tell me I can pull the trigger! Or, if you don't think I can, tell me why! No, you cannot retire safely. Your current cash outlays are too high with a long road ahead. If you could reduce your cash outlays to $4k a month, then maybe. Also, you may want to buy yourself a modest house in a low cost locale and pay it off before you retire. OP are you open to part time work or some sort of gig work? You have a very long horizon with too many unknowns and uncertainties. it doesn’t ...

Free money.. it’s a sweet dream that turns into nightmare by the day break.

I would call/write someone to get this resolved asap. School will eventually find out and claw back the money. You might have paid taxes on it and IRS won’t refund you easily. Do you get the nightmare part.

BTW how are you guys sleeping these days? (Not judging you, just curious if this wakes you up)

Re: I have 500k to invest but keep procrastinating

OP I can understand you. I was having similar issues (but on a much smaller scale) with trusting the stock market. What really helped me was M1 Finance automated investment strategy. You basically make a pie of your favorite stocks/etf and specify a percentage of money to go into each of the slice. You can the setup an automatic periodic investment program.
This helped me start small and develop trust in the market over a period of time.

I’d suggest that you start with a total market or S&P etf. may be some international or bond fund as well.
Some examples

VTI
VXUS
VTV
VGT
VOO

Don’t be discouraged by market downturns instead think of them as buying opportunities.

Kids learn a lot by observing. If parents are responsible with money and don’t maintain credit card balances, save for your future, don’t overspend then your kids are already learning by watching the parents. I occasionally chat with my daughter about my family’s financial conditions when I was growing up, how mortgages and banking systems work, stocks etc. I will be giving her some money to invest on her own, so she can get excited about investing.
I will be watching this thread to get tips from others:)

Re: Should I Replace a Toyota Corolla with a Tesla 3?

I didn’t go through the other comments but as an owner of Model Y, I can tell you that these cars are super comfortable and fun to drive. What is your net cost of Model 3 (after rebates and 12K trade in)? I am thinking it is $16k. $38.5k for the car plus $3,300 for tax and an additional $1200 for destination is $43k in total. Next, subtract $15k in credits and $12k from car sale to arrive at $16k out-of-pocket. Then $1500 in savings per year from gas and maintenance. By that math, 10-11 years to "break even." But that's a misleading calculation, as I noted earlier. After 10-11 years (assuming the Corolla lasts that long), you're at "break even" of the initial net cost of the Model 3, but it's worth a good $15K or so mor...

From the reports I see on Twitter based on their monthly call reports,Schwab's unrealized losses on HTM portfolio exceed equity of it's banking entities which is pretty bad. What is better for them is that they have more equity in the parent level that it can inject into banks. But I can see Schwab's largest depositors getting nervous right now and looking to diversify which can worsen their liquidity problem.

If joint AGI is over the limit, and one's AGI is qualified if filing separately, does it make sense to file separate tax returns just for the purpose of EV credit? You would have to run fed and state taxes both ways and see what works out better (taking the $7500 tax credit into account for the MFS case). I think TT desktop allows you to compare both via worksheet. (ADDED -- I just tried this very roughly, and it still seems to require some tweaking). Re: How do you save tax returns?

I have been filing the paper copies my CPA prints for me. Although they’re piling up so I’ll scan them during these holidays.
Those who are storing the copies on cloud, are you encrypting them?

Re: Buy 2006 BMW 325i for $22,500

A super low mileage can be a red flag. If the car is not driven regularly the engine starts to get “rusty”.
Take it to a BMW dealership and ask them to give you a price. You can probably get it valued at carvana too. This should get you a true market value.
I do agree with others that german cars are money pit after the initial 5 years of ownership.

Re: Andrews FCU 7 month CD 5% APY

Good luck moving money into AFCU. Their daily limit is 5k and my bank has a low limit as well. Ended up buying a 9 month brokered CD at 4.75%. Not too shabby.

Or gift to your kids if you have any.

Seems like if their published rates jump then you can call them to reset your rate. 3.55% seems like a good rate for me anyway. I’ll use the opportunity.
