Re: Have you walked away from Amazon?

Yes I've walked away. The more I learn about the way Amazon treats its employees, the happier I am to be out of it. I don't care that much about missing out on saving money - I can view that as one of my charitable donations.
I also don't like the fact that, because of Amazon, other businesses have not survived.

Your post isnt super clear. What bonds are in what types of accounts right now? What are you trying to get it to? You can sell within tax advantaged accounts without tax consequences. So if you are trying to switch from tax exempt bonds to total bond market within a roth or trad ira/401k you can do that now. Hello BBob, Thank you for your good comments. Those figures are correct. I don't know what accounts for that. I'll ask my CPA.

Re: Huge tax-exempt holding in wrong place

In the 12% tax bracket, it makes sense to get rid of muni bonds now and replace them with taxable bonds; use whichever fund is consistent with your risk level. If you do have a capital gain on your muni fund, it will be small, and you will pay only CA tax, as the federal tax is zero in your bracket. It is also probably better for you to hold stocks in a taxable account, since you pay no federal tax on qualified dividends or long-term gains. This does not mean that you should change your asset allocation, but you could sell stocks in your IRA to buy bonds, and sell bonds in your taxable account to buy an equal amount of a stock index funds. I will go ahead and exchange the Ltd Term Tax Ex for Total Bond and Short Term Bond. Do those choices...

Huge tax-exempt holding in wrong place

Dear Boglehead Friends,
I don't post very often, but I read here and I appreciate very much the helpfulness of you all.

Right now I have a question which has been plaguing me for many years.
I have set my portfolio at around 30:70. My problem is that the 70% bonds are almost all tax exempt - Limited Term Tax Exempt. They should be in taxable: My Federal Marginal tax rate is 12%; Effective 17.6%. California Marginal is 6%; Effective 2.2%.

I've been shifting some of the Ltd Term Tax Ex into Total Bond and Short Term Bond, but at the rate I'm shifting, it will be a year or two before I've put it all in taxable accounts.

Shall I do it all at once?

Thank you very much for your advice.

A Different Excess Roth Question for Alan S.

Hello Alan S.

In 2016, I contributed to a Roth. But on April 6, 2017, I discovered I hadn't made enough money. So I immediately removed it.
Now, in 2017, I have the 1099- R for 2017 with the amount of tax. Box 7 codes are P and J (I am 76)

Turbotax tells me I must filed an amended return for 2016. Is that correct?

Are the codes P and J correct?

Thank you for your excellent help on the form.

In a Roth or SEP IRA, tips fund or short-term inv grade

Hello, Years ago, I contributed to Vanguard tips fund admiral (VAIPX) in my Roths and SEP IRA. Then, when I saw advice here a couple of years ago, I stopped investing in VAIPX - but did not sell - and used Vanguard Short Term Investment Grade VFSTX in both Roths and SEP IRAs. Now I'm getting ready to invest in both my Roth and SEP IRA, but I have to admit, I haven't kept up with information enough to know if I should change from the VFSTX fund, go back to VAIPX - or should I be investing in something else? My portfolio is 30/70, with very little tax-advantaged space. In my taxable account I have the Limited Term Tax-Exempt fund, along with Total Stock Market. Any thoughts very welcome. Thank you in advance. PS I know I should study this in ...

Re: Has anyone converted paper I-Bonds to electronic?

Yes, I did it a year ago.

It's a good idea to call TD and find out exactly what you need to do.

I've forgotten the entire procedure, but I do remember that we had to take the paper bonds to a bank in which we had an account to get a signature guarantee (not medallion, as I recall). We then sent them in, along with
a form which you can download from the Treasury Direct website. Make sure you get the correct mailing address for your section of the country.

It went smoothly and did not take long at all.

Note: Do NOT sign the savings bonds until you are in the presence of the certifying bank employee!

Hope this helps and sorry I can't remember all of the specifics.

Re: I-Bond Purchase Over the Limit was Allowed ?

Buying $10k twice as two different people with the same SSN is not the same as buying $10k twice as the same person with the same SSN. The regs are clear: you are not your trust and your trust is not you. The only issue is if you can have 10 trusts with the same SSN. Here is one way to think of it. You open an account as yourself. You later open an account for your trust. They are totally separate accounts. Each account can acquire $10k in a calendar year. This is exactly what I did in 2012. I had an account and purchased the $10k I bonds. I then opened a trust account and purchased $10k I bonds. I got the letter saying it was not permitted. I followed up, since I had read the previously thread here saying that it was permitted, and the re...

Re: I Bonds through Entity Accounts - How Does it Work?

With all the threads on the limits on I bond purchases, there were lots of posts on how to buy $40,000 a year as a couple: you, your spouse, your living trust using your SSN, and your spouse's living trust using the other SSN. Now most couples don't have two trusts, but plenty have one, allowing them to buy $30,000 a year. I just thought that if someone was interested in buying I bonds, they would have known that your living trust using your SSN has a separate limit from your own limit. I guess the living trust as separate entity for I bond purchases wasn't as well known as I thought. A few days ago, I tried to purchase $10k in our recently formed living trust. Treasury Direct has responded that it's not allowed. My SS # is used for the tr...

Some Medigap policies will cover the deductible. My policy does not. The doctor's office finds out after submitting the bill to Medicare (which then sends it to my Medigap provider) that I have not met my deductible, or some portion of it. The doc's office then bills me that amount. This is my experience - other doc's offices may handle it differently.

Re: Medicare Part B First Doctor Visit...What do I pay

In my experience, once you've met your $140 deductible for the year, if you have a Medicare Supplement policy - also known as a Medigap policy - you will rarely have to pay anything else. I do have one provider who does not "accept assignment". "Accept assignment" is a Medicare term. It means that the provider can charge 15% above the Medicare approved amount. The one provider I have who does not accept assignment is a GP, so the 15% is a small amount. Some Medigap plans, like Plan F, will cover that 15%, as well as the 20% coinsurance that Medicare does not cover. I recommend getting a Medigap plan. Even if it's Plan A, which is what I have, it is good insurance to have. If you have lots of health conditions, or expect ...

Re-titling electronic I Bonds into our trust

Today I went over the paperwork for re-titling electronic I Bonds into our trust.
Hard to believe, but the TD website directs people with electronic bonds to "Trust" under "Entity Accounts" and there it states "If a single individual can't legally act alone, then you can't open an entity account." There seems to be no option for trustees who must act jointly.

Anyone know anything about this, by any chance? I'll be calling them again Monday but I thought I'd check with you first.
They are hard to reach - I've never been able to reach them by phone except between 3:30 AM and 6 AM PST!

My mistake; I missed the short term bond fund in your OP. It wouldn't matter how you chose the shares to sell, you shouldn't have big anything, gains or losses. Since January 1, Vanguard requires you to pick a method; if you sold last year, the default would have been average cost.

Re: Vanguard mistake in unrealized gain and... what to do?

You have sold shares, so you have both realized and unrealized gains. Look at both. How did you choose which shares to sell? If you sold the shares with the highest basis so as to minimize the realized gain, you at the same time kept the shares with the lowest basis giving yourself the maximum possible unrealized gain. I've looked at both. They are unbelievable. I have a huge realized capital loss (on a short term bond fund?) and the huge unrealized capital gain. So, yes, I will email and follow up with a phone call if necessary. I can see what's happened, but I don't see how the computer could have made that kind of error. It's frightening - this couldn't be happening just to me. As to how I chose which shares to sell? Because I'm plannin...

Re: Vanguard mistake in unrealized gain and... what to do?

I'm going to do as you do and track carefully from now on. I've already been to the Wiki to download a tracking spreadsheet (link didn't work; I reported it). I checked the wiki. Was it My Personal Index ? You can find it here: My Personal Index - Now a Standalone Application . Be sure to check the most recent posts for an update. I PM'd the owner for an update. It wasn't My Personal Index. It was the link in "most mutual funds". Here's the paragraph where it appears, but "most mutual funds" doesn't show up as a link here...: Sample spreadsheets Here are three versions of a spreadsheet for tracking tax lots, and computing the capital gains and losses on each sale. There is a version for stocks or ETFs, most mutual funds...

Re: Vanguard mistake in unrealized gain and... what to do?

Ok, thanks for that response. It's inconvenient to call from where I am, but I can email my rep. Follow up with a phone call if absolutely necessary.

I did check the confirmations and those are correct and so are the totals in the Accounts and Activity list. But when I click on that link I get a completely wrong unrealized gain/loss and total cost of shares. Way, way off!

I'm going to do as you do and track carefully from now on. I've already been to the Wiki to download a tracking spreadsheet (link didn't work; I reported it).

Thanks!

Re: Molar: repair or extract?

I've always been advised to keep every tooth I possibly can. You may find you need it in the future if you lose teeth in front of it or for some other reason.
If a dentist implied it didn't matter, I'd find a dentist who knows it does matter.

Vanguard mistake in unrealized gain and... what to do?

I've just noticed that my Vanguard account online shows my short term bond fund has a huge unrealized gain and a very small total cost of shares. Shall I let it go for now and hope that it will be rectified at some point?

I am away from my records and have been for some time. I'm also not very good at checking - at least I haven't been up to now, but I sure will be in the future.

Another wrinkle is that in the past couple of months I have sold half the fund and I imagine the figures for the sale are wrong too.

I'm astounded. I've been too trusting. What to do??

Best wishes and thanks for your perspective.
