I used to have a boat. Then the kids came into this world. No more boat.
I have however worked on boats in several capacities since I was a teenager. So if I get the urge I just go out on that boat free of charge. It’s cost effective and I still scratch the itch.
This thread will have a variety of answers. Mostly based on income, assets, and spending ability.

Re: What would you do if you found someone else's lost credit/debit card?
I found a few in my time.
Including one sitting in an ATM still logged in once and asking me if I want more time. In that case I canceled the transaction and gave it to Public Safety (was at a college).
The others I gave to the police station or store manager.

I’m an index investor. VTI & SPY mainly, but I’ve been running some numbers in portfolio visualizer and my company stock has been absolutely killing it since their IPO in the 80’s (11,300+% since 84’). Company does pretty basic stuff, not tech related. Mainly heating, cooling equipment, etc…
The question is should I add take a position within my 401k?
I already talked myself out of the Contrafund for that account and will stick with the SP500 fund in that account.
Thanks!

Are you familiar with Enron? If not, google it. Many employees lost a lot, having their company stock in 401k.
Sure, it could work out now, be a good investment. Or maybe not. Usually holding more than 5% in your employer would be inadvisable, so if you must, keep it small.

To be honest I originally liked the idea of M1 - Auto-Investing weekly, auto-rebalancing, etc...
I ultimately decided to close my account because although on paper it looks great there were too many moving parts, and it ultimately was a letdown.
Your trades only happen at a certain time of day, if they happen at all. Fees to cashout were another reason. Don't even get me started on all the paperwork I received when it came to tax time, although this is my own fault because I chose to invest a basket of individual stocks.
The juice isn't worth the squeeze in my mind.

Re: Why not just VOO and chill?
There are worse portfolios to have. Holding just the S&P is not the most popular choice around here - most hold the 3 fund portfolio. Mainly due to the argument about past performance does not guarantee future results (historically the US market has done well, but that may not always be the case) and overall diversification. I tend to believe most of the companies in the S&P have some sort of global exposure, hence holding international is not a big focus of mine. Bonds (think BND) are important to an extent, but after some pullbacks we see they didn’t offer the kind of ballast/dry powder/protection many believed they offered. These days I’d rather hold Treasury ETFs over BND. So my .02 VOO & chill is fine in my book and if you ...

Automatic Investing at Fidelity
I have a question that’s been bugging me. I have almost all of my accounts (retirement, brokerage, etc) at Fidelity. I want to setup automatic investing for my brokerage account into their total market fund (FSKAX). I noticed that you can only auto-invest monthly. I’d prefer it to be biweekly to go off of my pay schedule.
How are you current Fidelity users dealing with this?
Are you just investing once a month and that’s basically it?
It seems other brokerages have weekly or biweekly options as well. The only thing I can think of is to have the funds direct deposited into my brokerage account and then invested according to my core holdings.
Thanks in advance!

Make damn sure all water hitting the roof, driveway and sides of the house is diverted away from the house. Best way to check that is in a driving rain (but careful for lightning). If there's something off, such as a collapsed subsurface pipe fed by a downspout, fixing that could reduce or eliminate the need for the sump pump.

I’ll chime in here because I recently sold a piece I acquired a few years back. It was a singed Cartier piece that held some sentimental value for me and I decided to let it go. I went to several local
Jewelry shops who only offered to pay melt, which wasn’t much. I was surprised since it was a signed 18KT with some previous stones. I sold it for approximately 5X melt on eBay. Honestly it wasn’t even worth the hassle. I should have just kept it.

Re: electric car stocks. What's your opinion?
I’ll play.
Right now I think consumers are coming around to electric vehicles, but the cost of entry is still higher than a used gasoline powered vehicle. This is a major issue along with the batteries (they don’t last forever) and our electrical grid capacity.
Tesla is way ahead of the competition and I think will remain in that position for quite some time. Ford’s loss per vehicle is irrelevant right now. They invested in making electric vehicles, it’s not the same as say the Edsel disaster, but could be close if they don’t play their hand right. Remember they didn’t get bailed out in 08’.
If the indexes I own have electric car companies in them great, I am not gambling on any one company.

My MBA taught me one thing. ROI. Be it on time, money, etc.
If I dedicate my resources to a project what is the ROI, or in some cases cost savings versus hiring someone to do it.
Fixing a washing machine or painting a small room is rather cheap to do - both monetarily & from an investment of time. So I do it.
A large scale yard project that I could do on my own over a course of several weeks, that I’d need to rent a truck for, hire a few extra hands to complete does is not a good ROI for me. So I hired someone to do it.

If I know I have a large expense coming up, I'll hold on to extra cash in the checking account.

I really wish they taught Persona Finance 101 in high school.

I would max out your 401K contributions to decrease your current taxes. Also start maxing out her Roth, via the backdoor if necessary. Fees are high on your stable value fund; so I'd use only the S&P in your 401K. Pay off the auto loan and resolve never to take out another one. You likely don't need such a large EF; after paying off the auto loan, I'd keep $100K in cash and dollar cost average the rest into Total Stock Market and Total International over the next three quarters. By holding all of your desired international allocation in taxable, you'll get the benefit of the foreign tax credit. (20% international is as close as you'll get to a consensus view around here.) Consider buying your annual allottement of $10,000 per taxpayer ...

To answer the OPs question I’m not really sure. I’m definitely more aware of what’s going on now than in the past. Mostly because I’m older and have more to lose these days. When Signature bank tanked in NY I didn’t think much of it until my check didn’t come on time. Made me think twice. I’m not a fan of big banks - JPM, Citi, etc - but like my investments diversifying where I store some of my cash should hopefully limit any downside risk. I’ll probably open an account up with a bigger bank just in case. I’d be more worried if I had all of my money tied up in non-insured accounts. Don’t get me wrong I have plenty there, but I’m also keeping money in HYSA at a few banks just in case. Worst case I lose a little to inflation, best case I have...

I like the idea of going somewhere with the family also. Always wanted something near the beach. Spoke to a wealthy friend of mine and he had some pearls of wisdom - “Why buy something and worry about taxes, maintenance, insurance, natural disasters. I could stay in the nicest hotel around for a month and negotiate a great nightly rate.”
At first I was like you’re nuts, but then I see my friends who bought vacation homes and they are mostly complaining about how they have to get there to check on this or that. Not really the fabulous lifestyle I have in mind.
If you want it go for it. Make those memories. You got the financial resources to make it work.

In various finance book shows a bar graph chart where over a longer horizon the return of stock become positive. The chart implies that the longer you hold the stock, the less risker it is. I have in fact mentioned this wording in the past. However, this is probably not correct. Stock risk does not decrease with investment horizon. It's just that because stocks have a higher return result in a positive return if held for long periods of time. The risk however does not decrease. If you hold stock for a long time, you will likely hit a market correction. The investor will feel the pain and see their portfolio decline sharply even if in the end they end up with more money than they started. This makes me wonder if this is a good white lie. Be...

I mean you’re basically just buying out of favor sectors. Very Hetty Green like - Buy investments that are out of favor and then sell when they appreciate.
With all honesty I’d expect you make better returns than plain Jane VTI or VOO if you can buy, sit, and wait long enough.

Re: Is asset allocation possible without looking at historical data
My answer to the OP is yes.
All I know is that historically equities go up. Are there bumps in the road now and then? Yes, but if you hold long enough they become less and less of an issue because the chart always goes up.
That being said my AA is biased because I mainly hold VTI & VOO.
Are there great companies overseas? Yes, but I think we’re in a world now where companies based both domestically and internationally are so intertwined there’s no need to hold another fund to get exposure to international companies.

Re: Where to put Dividend ETF & REIT Funds
Just curious. I don’t have access to a Roth since I make too much money. Should I place these in a Traditional IRA? Also, if I want to put in more than my IRA limit, where should I place these funds? Thanks! It depends on what kind of space and how much of that space you have. Under most circumstances, REIT should not be held in taxable. IRA, Roth IRA, 401k type plan are all good. If you don't have any of these other spaces to hold it, consider that REIT is already included in total stock and 500 index funds and maybe you don't need any extra. Sort of the same with a dividend ETF although I suspect that a dividend ETF would be better in taxable than REIT. However, if you want to maximize tax-efficiency, you would use total stock in taxable...

Re: You're in your 20's, just made 100k profit from your business, how do you scale your wealth?
I have a small business that I run on the side of my regular job. It creates some revenue for me but nowhere near 100k yet. And I stress yet because it most certainly will in the future. I learned a lot in the last year or so since I incorporated. 1. Cash flow is EXTREMELY important 2. Take your time 3. Block out the noise 4. Keep grinding 5. Have some fun with it 1. I was cash flowing my business from my W2 income to get it off the ground. While this was great when I had big commission checks rolling in from my day job everything hit the skids when the sales slowed down for me. Whatever you think you need to get your side business off the ground, double it. Then possibly double it again. 2. I’ve seen so many guys try to set the world on fi...

Re: FIRE Situation at age 40
No one has really said this yet so I’ll chime in. I think there’s a growing trend of people in our age group dealing with this same situation/thought process. I’m 36 and often ask myself “Is this it?” Cause if it is I want out. It may be teaching for you but for me it is all the corporate “nonsense” I have to deal with on a daily basis. I’m tired of it. My plan has been to start my own side hustle/business that can help me replace my income. It has to revolve around something I am passionate about. It has been slow but steady. A few more years and I should be there. Perhaps you can do something similar. You need to do something when you leave your job. Might as well make it produce some income. You need to take some time and just brainstorm...

Re: Durable Medical Equipment Billing Surprise
Unfortunately this has a tendency of happening with many DME Providers.
They try to bill insurance and when it falls through because they either didn’t file paperwork correctly or there wasn’t an actual need they send you a bill.
To top it all off they’ll claim these are custom made and/or are a medical device of sorts and they won’t refund you.
Rock and a hard place unfortunately.

Awesome thanks all! I’ll probably go all equities. Need to read up on the plan details. This is a first time having one for me.
