Re: Oil Change Advice Honda CR-V
I would get it changed when the year is up. Owner's manual for our 2010 says 1 year or according to maintenance minder. We usually get to 8,000 to get to 5% oil life. The mechanic who gets paid for oil changes may tell you to change at some higher % but that isn't Honda's recommendation

Re: Did I take appropriate steps to ensure proper insurance coversge for medical procedure
This is facility dependent i.e. there is no universal approach. Diagnostic pays better but there is generally nothing to preclude billing screening. This is important for people to be understand because it is counter-intuitive for most of us. For example, if a woman has ever had a diagnosis of breast cancer or pre-breast cancer all subsequent mammograms will be considered diagnostic, rather than screening.

Turbotax is pretty nice and the 1116 is very easy. Although I liked the old Vanguard deal, compared to paying someone to do taxes TT is not bad.

TaxSlayer's web site indicates that it can handle form 1116 Foreign Tax Credit but it can't. For individuals/joint filings with < $300/600 you can claim the credit without filing the form. If the amounts are greater TS doesn't give you the option of completing the form. I confirmed with customer service. I am back to Turbotax which has worked well for me for years. I did like it when Vanguard paid for it

Re: Vanguard offers login security code
This was not the solution I asked for exactly, my Etrade account uses the dynamically changing password each and every time, which is less convenient, therefore seems more secure. It seemed more secure until RSA was hacked. Back in the old days I assumed it was magic and not subject to hacking. Soon I will have unlimited texts but for now I pay for each. How would GV work with this? I'd have to check my GV account for the code? Seems a bit cumbersome . Open Google voice in one broswer tab, open the login for Vanguard in another. Not too cumbersome. Of course I have 2 factor for my Google accounts using text. What I found interesting is as soon as I turned on 2 factor auth, I started getting texts at 2AM. Yes, folks were actively trying to ...

True. People have their pet issue and want that implemented. I was a fan of the RSA security tokens over at E*trade but less so now that they (RSA) were hacked. Vanguard has good security. Probably user error/carelessness is the biggest risk but we all think that applies only to the other guy

There is sort of a continuum from PBK and TBP to various lesser organizations. It is probably specific to the area of study. I don't think a one size fits all applies here. My parents wanted me to get the PBK key which was optional and more expensive than the initiation fee. In 35 years I still haven't had occasion to wear it.If you have to spend money to join its not an "honor," it's a club.

Evidence is fine but marketing is designed to appeal to people. A web site run by a dentist with a personal story about his beliefs about grain seems to have a lot of influence. I thought it was interesting that the Tufts and OSU web sites linked in this thread specifically address the grain myth. Most of the claims made by ultra premium brands is pure marketing and not evidence based.

I would also consider anonymously reporting to HR if not for the fact that the new guy would be suspected.Don't pay and see what happens... They won't fire you over it, although you may get on a "list"... So who cares? If being on that list has a noticeable impact on your work life, then you can start looking for another job.

Re: Amount to set aside for Special Needs Trust
I think all you can do is estimate. People plan 3-4% withdrawals from retirement portfolios that need to last a few decades. Maybe 2% would be a good estimate for this longer term situation. That would mean 50x current spending. Of course you would need to inflation adjust and perhaps even eventually account for his aging. I am not sure that a one time attorney visit will resolve this.As a result, we haven't been able to more accurately assess how much to fund it when we die.
We haven't really found any guidance in this aspect. Estimates range from a low of $250,000 to millions of dollars.

I bought a house in Michigan 20 years ago and the current value is the same or less. I don't think anyone would have predicted this at the time. I would be in trouble if I had been counting on price appreciation. I don't regret the decision but my point is that we might be best off basing decisions on current needs than predictions of the distant future.Annual rent increases are the norm in many areas and they can exceed the rate of inflation. I think increases in my area have averaged 4-6% per year with recent increases being even higher. Buying a home in ten or twenty years could involve significant price appreciation relative to current prices.

not bad to have diversification of carriers. The Nexus 5 is a great phone but I have been impressed with a Nokia 521 windows phone that we are running on our T mobile plan. $70 new. T mobile isn't for everybody but it works fine where I live. I tested it out with a dumb phone on prepaid before committing. P-tel is sort of a Ting like MVNO. I haven't switched since we have a cheap discontinued family plan with t mobile. The beauty of the Nexus 5 is that it supports both GSM and CDMA so if my wife is unhappy with Ting (Sprint/CDMA) she can switch to Straight Talk (ATT/GSM) and vice versa for myself.

We live in Boise, very low cost of living, no crime, and make very good money. We live on about 20% of our gross (36% of our net) income, we live in a nice (2700 sqft 5 bedroom in a nice neighborhood) house, drive nice cars (we lease new every 3 years because we like new cars, can afford it and otherwise are frugal) and occasionally buy designer clothes (I love them, she would rather save the money). When we go on dates we eat at the nicer resturants in town and this weekend we are doing a stacation and spending nearly $400 for a hotel for one night.

so is this related to your thread about the guy who wants a Porsche? FWIW I have been frugal about objects but less so with experiences. Flew to Disneyworld with the kids and wife enough that they got tired of it. Cruises, trips. I buy expensive beer and consumables. Experiences that you defer may not be replaceable. It helps that Mrs is ok with frugality. When I have upgraded product quality I have found that the thrill doesn't last. Hedonic treadmill and all that.

Re: Attic Retrofit: Spray Foam Insulation [Updated w Images]
The pictures help. It looks tough. I wouldn't want you to level the house but if there is a central duct rising from the basement to the attic I was thinking that there might be a way to tap in to it in multiple spots on the first and second floor to have short runs of vents to living areas, abandoning the original ducts. Maybe a contractor has done this? Sealing and insulating the attic ducts might be the best you can do. I think R6 to R11 per energy star.

Same situation here but I couldn't figure out how to save money moving from a 4 to a 3 bedroom house after considering transaction costs including my time. The house we have now is bigger than we need now and still too big when we have kids. At least that is what we expect based on the average sized houses we were brought up in. If we were to move to a smaller home, we would want a 3br/2ba, so two kids could have their own bedrooms, if a third kid shows up then he will just have to bunk with one of the others

Do the statistics say that the 07 Accord is a safer car than the 07 Civic? Are you sure? Couldn't the respective groups driving these cars have just a little bit to do with it? In my neighborhood, the drivers of the Accord have to be among the most conservative and safety conscious lot there is (with the exception of maybe Volvo drivers), while the Civic is the number one tuner car going and favored by the 16-30 year old Fast and Furious crowd. Statistics seldom tell the whole story. Just sayin'... I suppose can make up whatever interpretation of the numbers you want. For 4 door sedans the driver death rate in the civic is nearly 3 times that of the accord. The multi vehicle vs single vehicle death ratios are similar. If crazy driving was ...

The overall driver death rate for the civic 4 dr is mostly from multi vehicle crashes not necessarily affected (at least as much) by esc. If you want a safer car than the 07 civic, the 07 accord would be a good choice with a death rate of 19/million.

Re: 2007 Honda Civic, to sell or not to sell?
Just to keep things in perspective, your 2007 Civic (assuming 4-door) has a driver fatality rate of 55 per million vehicles registered. In other words, the fatality rate is tiny, and it compares extremely favorably to other cars of its size and, indeed, other cars that are much larger. If a previous poster is correct that you could drop that by 50% with a brand new Civic, I think it's still vitally important to ask yourself what that reduction is worth. To me, that change in percentage (50% less than an already miniscule rate) is worth approximately nothing, though reasonable minds could differ. good point does someone have an actual reference for the 2014 number? Lease: Who controls master alarm code?
I am new at this but I am looking at leasing a small commercial building. The lessor wants to retain a key and control over the master alarm code. I am fine with periodic inspection of the property but hesitate to allow him unrestricted access to the building when I am not there. From time to time I will need to allow others to enter the property for me and it would be more convenient if I had the master code for the alarm and could assign them a code.
The lessor says that what he is proposing is standard. Is that so? If not is there a reference I can cite?
