Re: Ticklish Tax Puzzle

Thanks to all for their replies. She didn't have taxable income for 2013 and 2014, so while she did "carry back," all of the 2015 NOL then gets carried forward to 2016. Anyway, I still don't see any way to further optimize given the current situation, so I think I'll advise her to file as is and cha...

Ticklish Tax Puzzle

Hello all- Here's a tax puzzle for all the tax nerds (myself wholeheartedly included) out there. I'm helping a friend with her 2016 return, and I want to see if I'm maximizing the return to her (i.e. minimizing her tax burden). She pretty easily gets down to $0 of tax, but I'd like to go further if ...

Re: Tax Gain Harvesting: Which shares to sell?

I've done that exact thing - looked at the percentage gain/loss of VTI near the end of the day to reflect extremely closely what the change will be on VTSAX at the market close. Thanks Longdog. Is there an established reference that shows the reference between the prices of the ETF and the mutual f...

Re: Tax Gain Harvesting: Which shares to sell?

Thank you all for your responses. I think I'm starting to understand it: if/when I want to pull money out of the portfolio (in a situation where I would be taxed on the gains), I want to have some of the shares have as high a cost basis as possible. This means that any time I do TGH, start with thos...

Tax Gain Harvesting: Which shares to sell?

I'm hoping to do some Tax Gain Harvesting this year (thank you free LTCG for 15% tax bracket!), and I'm looking at which lots to sell (I use Specific ID). Having done manual reinvestment approximately monthly, I have a lot of lots to choose from at various price points. Is it better to sell a lot of...

Re: Deferred Comp vs. 401k Match

She will be contributing the maximum to her 401k (including the 55-plus catch-up contribution). What is at risk is not her contibution but the employer match. The match is at risk of being forfeited since her employer matches up to 5% of base salary. So by deferring some of the salary, the "base" wi...

Deferred Comp vs. 401k Match

Hello all- Yet again I'm asking for a friend, once the net-present-value calculations started hurting my head. My friend works is in corporate America, nearing the end of her working years. She plans to quit after 3 months of 2017, and right now is the time to sign up for the "deferred compensation"...

Re: Q For Tax Mavens: EDPA for disbanded LLP?

Yes, you read correctly -- all current and suspended passive losses from the activity are "freed" in this scenario. A partnership is just the passthrough vehicle through which the partners themselves invest; quite sensibly, the "disposition rule" therefore treats the sale of the activity by the par...

Q For Tax Mavens: EDPA for disbanded LLP?

I've read IRS publications, forms, and instructions until I can't see straight, so I'm hoping there may be some tax gurus here who can help me out. Here's the situation: In my pre-boglehead days, I joined an LLP as a limited partner. The goal of the LLP was to participate in the purchase, refurbishm...

Re: "Vacation Buy" from employer - is it worth it?

Thanks again for all the responses. I shared your responses with my friend, and her general feeling was that since she would probably be more or less expected to continue working, even though she wouldn't be paid at all for that time, it's not worth it for her. In any event, lthenderson, Starper, an...

Re: "Vacation Buy" from employer - is it worth it?

What is this 'pre-tax'. If you're not getting paid there is not thing to tax...or is there. Sounds the least bit illegal and the most bit fishy. Or maybe the other way around :confused I strongly doubt that it's illegal (they're a big company after all and this is a pretty public policy they're off...

Re: "Vacation Buy" from employer - is it worth it?

Why 'bid' on time off unless there are numerous people that want to take a time off at the same time (say an extended vacation over Christmas or Independence Day) where the person who 'bid' higher than the next person gets those days in a preferential manner over coworkers who did not bid or bid le...

"Vacation Buy" from employer - is it worth it?

Posting for a friend to whom I've been preaching the boglehead gospel: My friend works in Corporate America and she needs to pick out her benefits for 2016 in the next few days. One benefit they are offering is "Vacation Buy," which works like this: She can "buy" up to 5 extra vacation days (in one-...

When am I ready for TIPS/REITs?

Hello all- I'm a neophyte here, and I just got through reading the Bogleheads' Guide to Investing. I love the simplicity of a three-fund portfolio as describe extensively here on the site and in the book, but I have a question about TIPS and REITs. The book describes TIPS and how they work, which wa...

Hi Shy- I'm just a neophyte myself, so I have more questions than answers, but I'll take a stab at answering what I've been able to deduce so far. 30% total Israeli government bonds ETF (43% of which are inflation linked bonds). 5% tel-bond 60 ETF (holds the 60 corporate inflation linked bonds with ...

Re: Any other Bogleheads in Israel?

Hi Yehoshua-

This is a shot into the dark of history, but yes, I'm an aspiring Israeli boglehead.

I don't think I can sent PMs for some reason (joined only recently), so can you PM me or somehow send me your contact info?

Thanks,
Shmadas
