Re: Is Utah the most convenient destination for East Coast skiiers?

I guess convenience is in the eye of the beholder. You can fly into Eagle or ASE and be at world class resorts as quickly as Utah. Flying into DEN and slogging up I-70 is obviously further.

Re: Retirement - Living in Colorado

In Colorado, I'd probably go for Boulder, which is ranked higher on the list above. Be advised that Boulder is the most expensive city in the state. I doubt that Boulder is more expensive than Aspen or Vail—and I live in Boulder. If I was looking to move somewhere else on the Front Range, I’d proba...

Re: SF bay area: high school IB programs [International Baccalaureate]

Sorry, I don’t live in the Bay Area. When it came time for us to shop for the right IB program and high school, it quickly became apparently that each school district in our metro area only had one or two high schools offering a diploma at all. From there, it was pretty easy to determine which were ...

Re: downside of going to a competitive high school?

My daughter attended one of the best high schools in our state. Public, huge, and highly competitive for the elite top 10-20% of students, with an IB diploma program. Upsides: Excellent college prep. Absolutely outstanding in almost every topic—deep subject matter expertise by teachers in a wide var...

Re: I wanted to teach myself computer programming.

I’ll throw in my two cents here. If you want to learn the basics and don’t have a background in programming, I’d start with Python and a free IDE (sorry, haven’t done much Python beyond helping my kid, so no obvious recommendation). Java would be next—several free self-contained compiler/IDEs which ...

Re: Used car buying: what premium for mileage?

I went through this a couple of years ago buying a recent model year large, expensive vehicle. Over time, it became pretty clear that for the same vehicle (year, trim level) the price dropped by about twenty cents per additional mile already driven. I’m guessing for less expensive vehicles the numbe...

Re: Helping child buy condo with 529 money

Disclaimer: I’m just putting forth a theory: I think you might have a much cleaner time of it if you buy the condo and rent it to your student at a market-rental price. Otherwise I think you run into issues because you can only withdraw the costs from the 529 in the same year that they were incurred...

I’d dispute whether you really need AWD in Chicago. It’s been quite a while since I lived there, but my wife and I both got along fine with our FWD Honda vehicles. They are pretty darned good with the plows and salt. The very worst days you stay home or go in late.

Lots and lots of hotels to choose from because the cruise port, airport, and beach are all within a few miles of one another. Chest freezer not quite cold enough

I’ve got a twelve year old chest freezer that seems to be struggling to keep things cold enough. Things on the top are a bit mushy. My $10 amazon temperature gun shows the walls are as cold as 5F, but the contents are in the mid-20s. Increasing the knob for colder hasn’t really changed anything, nor...

Re: Programming new Toyota Camry (2007) key/fob

You can do this yourself if you are technically inclined. You have to buy a key blank (from Amazon or wherever) and have it cut to match your key. This will unlock the doors but not start the car. You have to program the car to allow the key; this requires downloading software from random places on ...

Unfortunately this amount of cash will only put a dent in my mortgage. Parked Car Hit and Run--Count as Claim on Insurance?

My teenager daughter drives to school sometimes and parks near the school. Coming out after school last week, she noticed somebody had grazed her fender, leaving a nice 12" of scraped off paint on her fender and a small dent. Of course, no note was found. A police report has been filed (online--thin...
