Re: Moving from Bay area, CA to Knoxville, TN
While Knoxville certainly isn’t in any way comparable to the bay area, the metro Knoxville area does have its technical community. Oak Ridge (one of the 3 secret cities built during WWII) is about 15-20 minutes from West Knoxville and the home of Oak Ridge National Laboratory ( http://www.ornl.gov )...

Re: Optimized Roth Conversion Model
I’ve been pondering about beginning Roth conversions next year when I turn 65 to help moderate my fed taxes when I turn 70 and begin to collect SS and start taking RMDs, so your ‘Optimized Roth Conversion Model’ spreadsheet is very timely for me. I download the latest version and have been reading t...

Re: C8 Corvette - who is buying?
The Corvette is too big for me (but then I drive a Miata now). I do like the way it looks, compared to its predecessor. I still miss my old MR2 and will be very interested to see whether Toyota indeed brings it back someday. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a28119853/toyota-mr2-future-sports-car/ ...

I guess you haven't heard of RAAM... Race Across America. 3000 miles, across 12 states, and climbing over 170,000 vertical feet. Now that's a race. :D https://www.raceacrossamerica.org "Solo racers have a maximum of 12 days to complete the race, most finishing in 11 days with the fastest finish...

Re: Car rental drop-off fees
Sky Harbor airport has got to be one of the most expensive places to rent a car. We did a trip from March 25 - April 9 of 2017 and the cheapest that we could find at the airport was a Ford Focus or equivalent through Budget for $981. Found that we could take a cab about 5 miles to a Tempe Budget loc...

This thread is making me feel old… still using the pair of Magnepan MG-III speakers and Hafler DH500 power amp that I bought back in 1984! Back then it was strictly an audio setup also using a Dynaco PAT4 preamp and AF6 tuner. Later replaced the PAT4 preamp with a Hafler DH101 preamp. Then came hom...

Re: HSA for 11.5 months
Thanks Big Dog and Spirit Rider for your prompt replies!
A follow up question…
Enrolling in a self-only HSA and being over 55 the normal yearly contribution limit would $4500 for 2019, so in my case of 11 months of HSA eligibility my contribution limit would be $4500 / 12 * 11 = $4125?

HSA for 11.5 months
My COBRA insurance eligibility ends Jan 31 of 2019 so I’ve decided to not enroll in COBRA for January and instead have enrolled in an ACA HDHP compliant plan that would start Jan 1 of 2019. I’ll be turning 65 in mid-December 2019 thus the 11.5 months of eligibility for funding a HSA. I’ve tried rese...

Re: Retirement savings withdrawals
It sounds like we’re of similar age and mindset of when to walk away from the working world. I’m going to 30 hr/wk starting 1 July and looking at retiring fully at the end of this year or the first quarter of next year. The significance of 1 July is that that will make my full-time working career 40...

Re: Northwest FCU 3-year 3.04% Add-On CD
There’s a ‘Shared Branching Search’ icon on the home page of my local CU that I bank with that takes me to this website http://www.co-opsharedbranch.org . If I enter a zip code of 20172 I find Northwest Federal Credit Union listed as a member. NWFCU does not come up for my zip code. Good tip though...

Re: Northwest FCU 3-year 3.04% Add-On CD
I applied for a CD around noon on Friday and it took two phone calls to finally get the account fully setup late this afternoon. I ended up transferring more than the $15K and will transfer more next week once I round up some other funds into my checking account. Didn't want to pull those funds into...

Kevin, Thanks for the heads up on the FCU CD! I 'think' that I'm the proud owner of a 3.04% CD as I received an email telling me that they received my application and a New Accounts Representative contact me shortly by email... I hope that means they're just completing the final paperwork on their e...

Re: How to sell an old car?
Clean out your garage! Back in 2012 I had a 1992 Toyota MR2 that has to be the most fun car that I’ve ever owned, but it was really starting to show its age. For being 20 years old the car was in amazing shape, but the rear-main seal on the engine was starting to leak, the boots on the CV joints wer...

Alan S, thanks again for your help! I guess that I was as...

Re: Mega Backdoor Roth Clarification
Alan S, thank you for your detailed reply. I didn’t note this in my original post, but I actually have 4 Roth IRA accounts with the earliest Roth IRA being opened in 1998, so it’s my understanding that because I have had a Roth IRA account that has already been open for more than 5 years, I will not...

New forum member! My brother turned me onto the Bogleheads site a couple of years ago and I’ve been pretty regular in following the forum and have learned a lot about both investing and preparing for retirement. I discovered that I’ve been pretty much a ‘Boglehead’ before I knew what a Boglehead was...
