Deferred comp/457 vs. self-directed IRA?

My wife is an employee of the town we live in, and asked me if she should participate in their deferred comp plan, in addition to her participation in the PERS plan there. From the little blurb I read, the deferred comp money goes into a 457 account. I don't know more about it... yet. My first insti...

Not sure. I was surprised when the iPad died, with no warning. You're doing more than twice as well as I am.

Please recommend a new tablet

My Samsung "Tab E 10.1" tablet just quit and I need to buy something new, now, sight unseen. I was reasonably happy with it, and the price seemed reasonable at about $300. My previous tablet was an iPad--liked it fine, but it cost more like $550 and it failed after 18 months. Primary use i...

Re: Cost of preparing Form 1041

This was certainly considered. If I call the CPA who does my personal return to ask questions or otherwise take up his time, he bills me in 1 minute increments at $225 per hour. The CPA who does my corporate told me he has 1/2 hour per year baked into his fee for phone/email time. In the case of my ...

Re: Cost of preparing Form 1041

My brother paid $1000 of the $2300 bill and we've been looking into whether more should be paid. The preparer gave absolutely no detail on his invoice, just a bottom line. I run a small business, hire out an enormous amount of work from a large pool of providers, and get a lot of bills for services....

Cost of preparing Form 1041

Looking for some general guidance here, if the forum rules allow it. My mother passed away during 2015. My brother, who was executor, had an estate tax return prepared for her estate by a CPA, and feels the amount charged--$2300--was excessive. I looked at the return and can see that the majority of...

Re: Power washer recommendation

If you ever want to wash more than a car, you'll wish you had a gas unit with some power. I bought a Dewalt 3400psi model with a Honda GX engine, and it's a great performer. $600. I use ethanol-free fuel with stabilizer in it so it can sit long periods between uses. With the right tip it is plenty g...

Managing kid's internet use

We have a 10-year-old daughter and are looking for ways to easily manage what she sees and does on the web. She is allowed a small amount of screen time each week, mostly to watch Netflix, and is usually where we can see her, but as she gets older she has learned a remarkable amount about how to use...

What type of account should I open?

I currently have two tax-advantaged accounts: a 403(b) from a previous employer, and an inherited IRA. I am employed now by a sub-S corporation that has employees aside from myself, and in which I am the sole shareholder, CEO, toilet-washer, etc. What type of account should I open if I want to conti...

Re: Air duct cleaning estimate - too high?

If you had remodeling work done and dust was generated inside the house, the contractor should have turned off the system, sealed all of the supply and return registers, and used another heat source. If they let dust or debris fall into the ducts, or worse yet ran the system during work, they need t...

Re: Windows - are these two equivalent insulators? hue?

You will get somewhat better energy performance from new windows with insulated glass units than from single pane with storm panels, for two reasons. One, the size of the airspace between the panes in an IGU is closer to optimal than it is with sash/storm, and two, the airspace is actually tightly s...

Re: How much did your roof cost?

Prices for roofing and everything else in construction vary widely by region, and based on other factors too. $500/square for tear-off, disposal, and new architecturals is right where you'd be in my market, near Seattle. The main questions I would ask are 1) is the roofer going to remove and replace...

Re: Architectural Shingles VS Metal Roof

Metal and architectural can both be great choices. I have a Pabco Premier 40-year comp roof on my house and a NuRay 24-gauge "snap-lock" metal roof with Kynar 500 paint on my shop. I'd rather have put metal on the house, but it wouldn't match the style (and my wife is an architectural hist...
