Don't get discouraged, keep investing. Now is a good buying opportunity, more money is made during down markets than up markets, you just don't realize it at the time.

Years from now you will look back at S&P 500 at 3,916 with fond memories and wish you could go back and buy more at that level.
Last year I actually "doubled down" and was investing quite a bit more than I did previously, same with this year so far. Keeping my head down and plowing ahead! Eventually it will pay off

I have an odd, specific question...

I recently started the Lord of the Rings trilogy book, about 1200 pages

I don't think I want to read this book continuously though, and want to switch back and forth to it.

I have 2 other ~1200 page books in the queue, both by Stephen King, that I need to get to:

So, which of the following would pair better with LOTR?

Re: Lastpass - abandon? Best alternative for Mac+iOS+Windows+Yubikey household

Not much love for Bitwarden in this thread....

As of December last year I had no password manager, re-used bad passwords all over my accounts and bad security practice in general. It wasn't until I read SoftwareGeek's post in this forum about protecting yourself, did it really open my eyes.

Now I have all unique/strong passwords for all my accounts, stored in Bitwarden and backed up in an encrypted folder. No complaints at all about them so far, but my needs are pretty simple. 1Password does have the better looking UI/UX it seems, but for what I need Bitwarden is fine.

Scouted out a viewing spot on the ride up and after returning to our place, collected the family and walked back over and watched from Turn 6 just above Huez. Thanks, there's some good ideas from that list. I use Bitwarden so the interface isn't laid out like that at all. The options are more more generic (logins, secure notes, cards, identity...). That's basically it. You then create custom folders to store the individual entries tied to those "types".

I think for higher entropy the words in the passphrase should not be related, they should not form a sentence.

I have no trouble remembering my passphrase which is composed of unrelated words, they don’t make any sense when put together.
You're right. I tried to think of something off the top of my head, but unrelated words are a better approach (ones that you would know but no one else would, obviously).

At most companies, you aren't going to get strong every year, as there is a quota on ratings. Higher level ratings get rotated around to make things fair and keep the peace. Performance reviews are mostly theater. Adjust your effort accordingly. As others stated, only be concerned with negative ratings. ^ This, exactly. I had literally 0 areas for improvement for this review, and a laundry list of positive feedback from my co-workers. Everything was "fantastic, and a great year" according to my manager. I ended up with Consistent (using the OP's ratings) rating. Meh. Cpl years ago I had Strong or Exceptional equivalent, I was no better than than I am now. Lots of good information here....

So for my limited knowledge in this area, is the following a safe assumption?

If you have a very strong master password (in Bitwarden, 1Password etc..) and a high key iteration set, even cloud based, the likelihood of someone accessing info in your vault is far less than if someone "hacked" the individual sites you are associated with themselves? For example Bank of America, SSA, Amazon...., even with strong passwords, could depend entirely on their individual security practices around password protection?

Re: Bitwarden usage process

Sorry Bertilak if this is considered a hijack but I have a usage issue I cannot resolve and thought I would ask it here. I have been using the extension with no issues at all. However, the iPad app is basically useless. 1. I open the app and login in to Bitwarden (BW) with 2fa. 2. I then go and launch a site using the BW app and it will load 3. I have the iPad IOS Password settings to autofill, BW is checked, and nothing else is active 4. The "password" bar loads at the bottom of the screen. 5. When I hit the password bar to load, it asks me to go through the BW full login process again, including 2fa, before it will fill. Every time, every site. So bottom line is I have to log in to BW every time I want to autofill a password. I...

Re: Kindle ebooks ? - What if Amazon goes out of business?

I only "own" < 10 books on my Kindle (I always rent from the library) but now this post has me paranoid. Maybe I should look into Calibre (figure out exactly what that is first) or at the very least download the files to my Mac.

I have the same paranoia with movies/TV Shows I have purchased through iTunes. I ended up backing up all of those files on a external drive

Re: SoftwareGeek's Guide to Computer Security

- 1Password which only allows around 100,000 iterations (can't increase) has a secret key, and is apparently more family friendly). I would have thought I could have increased the iterations to over 300,000 and feel a bit skittish after reading what happened to LastPass users. I've also read it keeps less personal info. Is 1Password secure even though it only uses about 100,000 iterations? Is it any more secure than Bitwarden? - Bitwarden. With this product I can increase the iterations, it seems as secure as 1Password, though no secret password and apparently collects more personal info. However I read today that Bitwarden has just acquired Passwordless.dev and I find myself a little concerned that that Bitwarden may possibly chase ROI an...

Re: 35k inheritance

I recently received a 35k inheritance. 5k would be for emergencies. 30k would be for travel . A little background information. I am 57 and my wife is 60. We would both probably retire at the age of 65. We've never made a large annual salary, an average of 30-40k combined. We are used to living on a shoestring budget and we do not have any debt. I'm reading "The Bogleheads Guide to Investing" and watched some videos linked to this site. These resources have made it easier to understand investing, but it's still a lot of information and doesn't all address our specific goals. We're not afraid to live frugally. We've never had the income to travel. Just from what I've learned, I know I don't want the money sitting in my bank savings...

Re: SoftwareGeek's Guide to Computer Security

If Bitwarden claims it would take "centuries" to crack a given password here: https://bitwarden.com/password-strength/ , is it safe to assume that password would NOT be a part of any rainbow table? No, not at all. It can certainly be a part of a rainbow table. The "x centuries to crack" calculation is based on length and complexity. Choosing a password by typing every key on your keyboard in sequence (!@#$%^&*()_+QWERTY...) will yield a "centuries" password since it is long and complex, but I'm sure such a sequential password's hash is in a rainbow table. Rainbow tables are used to bypass brute-force attempts which would take centuries. Got it. It's my understanding if specific institutions (Google, Vangua...

Tap on the PDF to open it, then tap on the share icon in the upper right, then select markup. You will then see tools at the bottom to markup the PDF.
Ah, perfect. Just what I was looking for. Thank you!

How to black out text on iPhone Notes scanned document

I have scanned some sheets of paper into a document via iPhone Notes. When I open the document in Notes, at the bottom I see the pencil icon and when I click on that I see all the options (pen, highlighter, eraser etc...), but when I click on the pen and try and draw over some text on the scanned document it doesn't do anything. Is there a way to do this within Notes itself before sending off the .pdf? Or do I need some other app in order to black out some of the text?

Re: What Book Are You Currently Reading? Part VI

I recently finished 2 Stephen King novels: The Shining & Misery. Both were very good but both quite a bit different than the movie versions. The Shining more psychological and Misery more “brutal” (for a lack of a better word) IMO
I’m following those up with Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. It’s decent/interesting but somewhat slow. Reads more like a history novel.

After you both max out your 401(k)s/HSAs you should still be under that.

Thanks, I just did this. Good idea. Now I have it backed up in a locked Apple Notes, and on an old phone. I think Im good :)
I just started using Microsoft Authenticator instead. Has option for a cloud back up.
I like the old phone idea... but storing on Apple notes? That might get synced to the cloud!
I made it a password protected note. Hopefully that helps
Still in the cloud?
Yes

EDIT: Ok, I just removed it from Notes. Stored the picture in an encrypted folder on my laptop. Now its backed up there and on my old phone
