Our policies with Mutual of Omaha have not seen any increase in premiums since we purchased them seven years ago, at ages 56 and 61. They also include a 3% increase in benefit amounts. Total cost is $1464 per year.

Once you have an "official" diagnosis of disability, an ABLE account can be set up, which currently allows annual contributions of up to $15000, with no effect on asset based federal programs, up to a high limit I can't remember..............

What will happen to your budget when the 17yo son heads to college in a year or two? Followed by a sister several years after that..........haven't seen any indication of college savings or the funds to "pay as he goes".

Look at the ER's; our 401K's buy institutional shares, so the cost is less---why we decided not to rollover (plus the former company subsidizes admin costs)

Back when I was filing FAFSA annually (13 years in a row!) I investigated the formula for determining EFC. After a certain "floor" income, based on family size/age of parents/number in college, the highest marginal rate on income was 47%!! Almost made the tax rates look reasonable..........

If the survivor benefits are from Social Security, they will cease at 18 or until you complete high school. Benefits haven't extended to 21 for several years.

Why was it necessary to "unsuspend" benefits? When my husband suspended last year, the confirmation letter from SS stated benefits would automatically begin when he turned 70. Your problem is disconcerting---we figured we were set!

We are disregarding our daughter's benefit--currently, it is very small, since she is also entitled to SSDI on her own record. We are trying to figure out the "new" best option for us as a couple.

Our carefully constructed plan to maximize our SS was torpedoed by the fall legislation, so Plan B is now up. Husband filed early, at 64 1/2, to start auxiliary benefits for myself and disabled daughter. If he suspends at FRA, (July 2016) can be then file a restricted application for spousal benefit...

In my state, MEDICAID has an asset limitation of $1000 individual/ $2000 couple---how have you been able to get around that if you have substantial taxable accounts?

I still work, and contribute to a Roth; joint income is under the Saver Credit ceiling, but since it includes my husband's 401K withdrawals I "read" that we can't use the Saver's Credit since his 401K withdrawals exceed my Roth deposits---correct???

Your current year contributions to IRA/HSA will be added back to your income, but the funds deposited prior to the year you are applying will not be considered. IRA withdrawals will be considered income, as well. Due to the recent FAFSA changes, your 2015 income will be be used for the next 2 school...
