Re: tablet or small laptop for general and travel computer?

I may get a Chromebook after all. Much more frugal.
I could get a Kindle Paperwhite for reading and use the Chromebook for web surfing, watching videos, and casual file work.

Re: tablet or small laptop for general and travel computer?

Well I checked BestBuy and the Surface Go was $549 for the 8GB/128GB model. I prefer 8GB RAM. That's with no keyboard. The keyboard adds $129 so you're $678 .. not $699.

I also saw a Lenovo Yoga 720 which looked nice as well.

I think it's between these two.

your favorite ereader?

I like to download books to read. I had been using an older 7" fire but the resolution and speed aren't great. I've tried larger tablets but ... I find they are too uncomfortable for reading. Sticking with a smaller tablet is great for reading but, not for web surfacing or email. I am considering a ...

Re: tablet or small laptop for general and travel computer?

The Surface Go is possible. It's not that cheap. $699 and keyboard is an option. I'd have to see if I'd be happy with a 10" screen. I'll check that out today in a MS store.

Chromebook is interesting but, I'd like to run some WIN programs.

Lenovo Miix or Yoga seem possible.

tablet or small laptop for general and travel computer?

I'm looking for a WIN machine to use in place of a tablet. I like to surf the web, read ebooks, watch a video, etc...

I had a tablet but hate entering text via touscreen.

A MS Surface is very nice but very pricey. I'd like to be < $800.

Buying house in retirement??

We are < 5yrs from retirement and would like to downsize soon. We want to stay in southern NH area. We will still have to carry a mortgage unfortunately. This will hopefully be our last move. If we move before retirement, our new location options will have to consider our commuting needs. We already...

Lump sum over annuity?

My wife's pension can be lumps sum ($600K) or annuity payout. Most folks say take the monthly annuity but if you choose 100% survivor benefit, the payout drops quite a bit. By it's nature, the lump sum is fully available to the survivor (spouse) as the beneficiary. I've used Fidelity RIP and it give...

low risk, low fee fund for older investor?

I'm 61yo, looking at retiring in 2 years. I've been socking $$ away in my 401K. That's pretty much my total savings strategy. Post tax savings are nil and I'm thinking I should develop a cash buffer, maybe invest in some low fee index funds. Any advice? ... or just stay put and sock away at the 401K...

Don't forget, it's not all about taxes. With the Roth, the growth is untaxed. Thus, converting early gives you the opportunity to enjoy significant growth which will not be taxeable at all!!

I'd love my kids to start an IRA account NOW while they are young (20s).
Can I create an IRA account in their name with modest funds and gift it to them?

I'm afraid if I give them cash to start one, they'll just spend it.

Almost all our retirement savings are tax deferred (401K, 403B, IRA) so, I'll need to factor in the taxes. I'll have to make some guess as to what the tax brackets look like a few decades down the road.

I figure, even if the new job isn't the best .. I can tolerate it for a few years and then retire for real.
The extra pension payment each month will help me pay down some debt (credit cards, small loan, some of the mortgage) which I want to clear before I finally retire.
