Re: sell some of my stocks?

I too have moved from individual stocks into a bogle head portfolio. No one can predict the future and tell you the "best" time to do this. Who knows, maybe the next Call of Duty will be even more terrible and Activision will go bankrupt ? If the stocks are in a nontaxable account, just pu...

Re: Is VG Total Stock Market Index too concentrated?

I'd say the only think that this highlights is that more anti-trust regulation is needed. The FB / Google stranglehold on online advertising would surely come under scrutiny if there was greater political appetite.

Re: Tax loss harvesting and Betterment

Once you account for marketing and software development, compliance audits and customer service based out of New York, on 100-205 employees (according to crunchbase) I think they would be breaking even at best, and burning through VC money at worst. My guess would be if an acquihire came in from a l...

Re: Tax loss harvesting and Betterment

It may be true that each new contribution could have the potential for TLH. However, the point is being made about the growing asset base which is not eligible for TLH which you continue to pay the 0.25% fee on despite obtaining no expected future benefit. This 100x times. The only thing that I use...

I read the answers ! But I never seen the DOW go up to almost 100 points and never seen my total stock mkt index loose me money with that many points. Based on being 80 years old. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [OT comment removed by admin LadyGeek] Relax and stop checking your account. There really is noth...

Re: Moving from Betterment to Vanguard - Need Advise

Value skew, should be tilt- So a portion of the US stocks is in "Total market", and a portion (around ~50%) is in Value Large, Mid and Small Cap. If it doesn't cost you any (or minimal capital gains) to get rid of it I would. In my case the bill would have been around 30k , so I decided to...

Re: Moving from Betterment to Vanguard - Need Advise

I have completed the move to Vanguard from Betterment recently. You are making a great decision and your future self will thank you :beer A couple of notes: 1. The cost basis is sent to you via csv. However Vanguard will not accept it, you need to instruct them to post it to Vanguard Brokerage Servi...

Re: Is robo for me?

Having been with robos and left, note that if you are in any doubt, go down the DIY route. TLH is nothing to be scared about, and furthermore, robos may cost you more in taxes if there are no TLH opportunities, since in they are unable to do a full portfolio tax evaluation unless they hold your 401k...

Re: Up my Total int'l ?

What does your IPS say ?

I would recommend writing one if you do not already have one. 30% International is totally fine, I would stay the course with your current allocation.

Changing because of YTD outperformance would not be boglehead practice

Re: Asset Allocation - easiest way to rebalance?

Some rebalancing resources you may find useful: To approximate the total stock market using 401k fund (no tickers, that is strange) https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Approximating_total_stock_market To rebalance using additional contributions I would use this website http://optimalrebalancing.tk/index...

Re: Total Portfolio Cleanup

Man, doing quite well for yourself at 31. Can I ask what career field you're in? As for the portfolio, can you explain the rationale behind holding so many ETFs? I feel like you could beef up VTSAX some, maybe add another mutual fund or two, and have it way more simple and cheap. At the amount of y...

Friendly heads up for anyone leaving Betterment

I have recently moved from Betterment to vanguard to set things in a bogleheadish direction I'd like to warn anyone doing this, that if they use a 'Tax Coordinated Portfolio' and submit transfer requests for the Tax Deferred and Taxable portions simultaneously that the transfers are actually done at...

Re: Roth IRA - is "self" transfer possible ?

@jhfenton I have - betterment sadly do everything by check for non taxable. For taxable they send the securities by slow boat it seems. I will personally never open an IRA, HSA, or taxable brokerage account anywhere until I confirm that I can transfer out in kind. These are wise words, as I have dis...

Re: Roth IRA - is "self" transfer possible ?

Thanks for the replies

Probably I should have been more clear- the withdrawal from betterment to cash will be done with ACH to my bank account, and then redeposited to vanguard with ACH, no mail involved.

Thank you for pointing out the One Rollover rule.

Roth IRA - is "self" transfer possible ?

A quick question, and one I need to double check before implementing I have a Roth IRA with betterment, which I would like to move to vanguard. For non taxable accounts, betterment typically liquidate the account and then send a check by regular mail (!!) to vanguard, a process which takes considera...

Depending on where you live (major city recommended) I would take a look at craigslist for desktop computers. It seems that gamers upgrade frequently and resell nearly new machines at a hefty discount to new I recently got myself a home desktop for $600 including 2 monitors. i7, 24Gb ram, tip top gr...
