Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

That's a valid point, will take that into consideration. Tried to capitalize on index funds by purchasing more when the market was down. Had some some success I suppose. Bought VXUS originally at 58.57 for 86 shares in January and then when the market went down, tried to purchase more, and bought at...

Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

time4life....I will give you somewhat different advice. 1) If you do not have a written ISP, write one. 2) Decide if the military will be your career. If so, think in terms of 20 (for the pension). And BTW, thank you from this American citizen. 3) Stay alive. This should have actually been #1. 4) A...

Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

What is HCOL btw? High cost of living (area). That's why just the 20% down. It's enough to avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI), which is extra monthly money down the drain, when home prices are ridiculous but rents even more so. Is there something that I can seek and readily available or you can...

Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

time4life - would like to add a couple of off-topic points here... First, great job in getting your financial life together at a young age - it looks like you are really on track, so nice job and thanks for your service. I'm mid 30's now and got serious about retirement accounts around age 26/27. I...

Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

Single, with a damn near guaranteed military paycheck you don't need a 6 month emergency fund. Yes, you should have some cash available for a vacation, down payment on a quality used car purchase, etc. Get some of that money invested in a taxable account with total US and/or total Intl equity index...

Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

Okay Devil Dog, I'll bite on your portfolio. Good job maxing tax-advantaged space at your age/grade. You're ahead already. Suggestions: TSP: 10% F 48% C 12% S 15% I Roth: 15% VXUS (or VTIAX when you have $10K) Responses to your questions: 1. Yes, I'd put international in the Roth IRA. It's ~22% of ...

Re: What online bank do you use?

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! I happened to stumble upon The Aspiration Summit checking account, which offers an 1.00% APY on balances above $2,500.00. Is this too good to be true? It has foreign transaction fees , so if you're doing much international travel, that puts it firmly below ...

Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

What should I open next for left over money? A couple of things; 1) Start saving up a downpayment for a house. (There is no hurry!) 2) Save up to pay cash for your next car. 3) Consider if you have a good "Now vs Later" balance. You are young, single, and presumably in good health and don't have ki...

Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

The governing board for the TSP recently decided to switch the I Fund index to the MSCI All Country World ex-US which should eliminate the need for holding small and emerging market completion funds like VSS or VWO along with the I fund. Apparently the switch might take a year or so but especially ...

Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

Zero, if you're removing the I fund. VXUS already contains VSS and VWO (and EFA). Man, why didn't I realize that. So to simplify things, I will remove the I fund and sell VSS. That would leave me with 18500 in TSP. I will have no choice but to tilt more towards U.S stocks and bonds. or.... I contin...

Appreciate the response. I was looking into whether investing into VXUS or VGTSX. Reading the forums about the two and can't really tell what the different is in terms of total international stock. Which am I suppose to go for. I know one is mutual and one is ETF. Latest thread on VXUS or VGTSX: htt...

Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

time4life, If your name is any indication, this is becoming way too complicated. The goal of the 3 fund portfolio is simplicity . The L fund is likely close enough. Vanguard Total Retirement is good enough for your IRA. All the rebalancing is done for you and you reduce the opportunity for behavior...

Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

Yes, these are two different paths to the same end. I don't think it really matters which you choose, as long as these are tax-protected accounts and you aren't paying any fees for rebalancing when necessary. Tax-protected same as pre-tax accounts? Looked into Vanguard, are these the funds I'm inve...

Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

Ah I see. So VXUS, VSS and VMO (ETFs) in VG ROTH IRA... Would that still be 38% in VXUS , 45% in VSS and 17% in VMO? No, this is a different plan now. Now your VXUS is already what you want it to be, and you are using the VSS and VWO just to complete your I Fund holdings. You'd have to figure out h...

Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

They all sound good haha. If i were to purchase ETFs, it would be ishares along with VSS, and VMO with a ROTH IRA brokerage account. Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

What's an EFA? So is it simple to open a Roth IRA and invest 38% in EFA , 45% in VSS and 17% in VMO? Is it as simple as me just telling the rep to divide it that way from 5500 ? Sorry, EFA is an Exchange-Traded Fund, aka ETF. Specifically, it is iShares MSCI EAFE ETF, and therefore it tracks the sa...

Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

So Total International has about 16% EM, and an average market cap of about $20.8B, per Morningstar. The I Fund should have about 0% EM, and an average market cap about $33.9B. VSS is about 14% EM and $1.5B, VWO is 80% (different definitions of EM) and $14.5. If you did 80% I Fund and 20% VWO, you'...

3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

Hello all, I am young and new admirer of the BogleHead style of investing and accumulated a wealth of knowledge from the 3 Fund Portfolio thread from Taylor. My head is about to explode with all the knowledge I gained and I am only 1/3 through the thread. However I was eager to make some changes to ...
