Re: Would you send your children to private school in my situation?

Just curious which suburb you are at in Seattle? I just bought a home in mercer island just so that my 10 month old would have a good public school. i debated a long time between public versus private in this area but figured it made sense to find a good public school. not sure i made the right deci...

Re: Stick with E*Trade or move to Vanguard?

i have both etrade and vanguard and they are both great in different ways. i would keep both but you can stick with etrade if you just want one. they have a lot of commission free ETFs to choose from. For example, etrade has ITOT which is ishare's total us stock market which is actually cheaper than...

Depends on your risk tolerance level. At those low interest rates I would just pay 20% down and not pay any extra. Invest the rest. How did you get a 3.5% loan? Is that a 30 yr fixed? I am taking 10/1 ARM loan. I plan to refinance if rates get better or pay lump sum in future and re-finance. I do n...

This is great. thanks for doing this. Wish all funds could be compared. I am in a high tax bracket and it helps to know which funds to buy for tax efficiency. My VSS in my taxable account has a tax efficiency of 0.94! Had no idea it was so tax inefficient. I may have to think about putting it in my ...

Why not use that?

Re: 529 AND UTMA

From my reading this non parental support definition defined by the IRS is quite vague and the wording of it leaves it quite open to interpretation. I think as long as there is some rational thoughts in your head for the expense that would match up with the IRS wording, it can be justified in case o...

This way every year I can harvest the UTMA tax free up to the limit to use for his non-essential expenses. I plan to deplete this ideally when he turns 18 or whatever the age is. I won't have to worry about him having control of this money. What do people estimate an amount for non-essential expens...

Yes this is my first child. I may or may not have another. 529 AND UTMA

I had planned on maxing out the 529 account every year for my kid until i started reading about UTMA accounts. For UTMA, the first $2100 in income for 2018 is tax free. Maybe I can gift stock to the UTMA account and harvest gains to pay for non-essential child expenses. Seems more flexible than a 52...

Re: Borrowing against portfolio for home down payment

Check out Interactive Brokers, you can transfer your Vanguard ETFs over and borrow on margin at less than 2.5% interest.

It's what I plan on doing for home down payment. I have the assets for the downpayment but why pay more than 20% long term gain taxes when I can get a 2.5 loan.

why not just put all your Vanguard ETFs into Interactive Brokers and borrow cash on margin if you need it?

No fees to set up. interest rate on the loan likely lower than any you'll get from any bank.

I have reached a similar conclusion that once your annual expenses are met by income streams, there is less of a role of fixed income. EE bonds have an implied interest rate of 3.5% if held to maturity to 20 years.

But you're limited to $10k per year.

With that amount of money, makes no sense to pay a percentage. Use a fee-only advisor. Cardiff Park or Evanson have good reputations. That's what I would do if I were in your shoes. Sure you can do it yourself the boglehead way, it's not easy. But you can pay a small fee each year to have an expert ...

I think AAPL will be fine. 2 issues I see with investor sentiment: 1. Comparisons of growth need to be made to previous S cycle upgrades (2 years prior), not prior fiscal year. Of course more people will not be as excited to buy an S phone rather than a new form factor. Year over year growth becomes...
