When my husband's company tried to set up a 401k for employees about 6 years ago, Vanguard refused to take them on as a client because there were too few employees. I don't know what the minimum number is, but they do (or at least did) have a minimum size.

Re: High expense 403b options - Mutual of America
Those expense ratios actually aren't bad. When you see an S&P index with 0.48%, it means that the employer is passing on the cost of offering a retirement plan to the participating employees. My husband works for a small company that for years didn't offer any retirement plan. Then they finally got one with expenses a bit higher than your spouse's. With that plan, all the costs of administering the plan are borne by the employees in the form of higher fees. There is no match. If employees were to protest the plan fees, my guess is that the employer would simply stop offering any plan.

And as fund holders, we want that? If it is a wake up call to get Vanguard to pay attention to security....yes we would, and I don't understand why you wouldn't. Yules This also lays waste to “Vanguard is client owned.” Clients want this fixed and it appears it is going to take FINRA to actually fix it. Has Vanguard already responded that they aren’t going to fix it? Yes, through years of incompetence and neglect. IT security is foundational in financial services. Way too many examples of their failures over the last few years. They need to get out of the brokerage business if they cannot maintain the security required for people’s life savings. Back in 2015 a Vanguard employee blew the whistle about security problems and was fired for it. ...

I got my first smartphone in 2014. It was a Samsung Galaxy Note 3. It had a removable battery. Whenever the battery lost significant capacity, I popped in a new one for $15.
I finally upgraded last year because the old phone operating system no longer supported a lot of the new apps. Unfortunately the new model doesn't have a removable battery. I understand why businesses practice planned obsolescence, but I detest the practice.

Re: Dental Plan Scam (new twist on bait & switch?) – Beware and Seeking Advice
wow, will never understand how anyone can do something unethical (like doing unnecessary work on a healthy tooth) to enrich themselves. Either something is missing in their upbringing or schooling (or both). It is sad. I recently chatted with an old friend that I've known since kindergarten. She still lives in the same town. One of the local dentists went to her son's elementary school to give a presentation. My friend was quite upset because this dentist did 10 fillings on her when she was in elementary school that in hindsight she probably didn't need. She had barely even started growing permanent teeth. She said having so many novacaine injections at a time at a young age was traumatic, and now the fillings have all fallen out. That was...

In my experience, unless you get a very solid explanation you trust (no "bat-sense" radar going up), or get no explanation, simplest thing to do is to ask for that explanation and say that you would like to get a 2nd opinion and will be asking that your medical records be sent to that provider. Often the reaction you get will give you an answer to whether or not it is necessary. Or, you say that you always like to take time to think about these things, could you take a copy of the notes from that visit home with your to review? You can also ask when is an old piece of work likely to fail and why (have them explain and show you) and result if it does. And how long is it likely to last until it does... My husband went to a dentist ...

In all seriousness, is this birthday party for your daughter (who will not remember any of it) or is it for you?? The timeframe of 3-4 hours is toooooo long for a 1st birthday party (1-2 hours max). And the number of guests is also on the high side. I agree with the other poster regarding setting "high expectations." Normally, there is some very, very simple food served, one cake for guests, one smaller cake for the child to "dig into," and some ice cream. Keep this very simple. Most kids on their first birthday are much more interested in a box or pan with some type of spoon/spatula to hit the box or the pan. I would save the money and put into a college fund. I agree. One thing that jumped out at me was how small your emergency fund is. With 2 kids and a wife, it really should be more than 3 months. I second the suggestion to open a Roth IRA. One great thing about Roth IRAs is that they can be used as a backup emergency fund. https://www.investopedia.com/articles/personal-finance/040714/how-use-your-roth-ira-emergency-fund.asp "You can only contribute a few thousand dollars to a Roth IRA each year, and once a year passes without a contribution, you lose the opportunity to make it forever" I am not sure what this quote means. Opening a Roth IRA is never a bad idea at your age and income level. It can serve as your emergency fund because you can withdraw up to the amount you contributed at any time without taxes or penalties. I would suggest investing it in a somewhat conservative fund if you don't have another emergency fund.

This isn't about paying for medical school, but one thing she may want to consider is freezing her eggs if she hopes to have children eventually. Yes I know that some women have children in medical school or during residency, but it's extremely stressful to be a new mother while working 80 hours a week for less than minimum wage. By freezing her eggs, she can greatly increase her chances of having children when her career is established and she is more financially secure.

Fidelity Freedom Index was somewhere in between.

Re: When doctors leave patients behind
I've had a doctor leave a few times. Once the doctor got a surprise job offer at a renowned medical school. The practice, which was part of a huge health conglomerate, had hired a new doctor and assigned all of the old doctor's patients to the new doctor. There was a several months gap between the old doctor leaving and the new doctor starting, so a lot of appointments got pushed back. During the interim, other doctors in the practice covered emergencies. One time a doctor in a practice with 3 doctors left. Someone new was hired, but again there was a gap of a few months.
