We've stayed in San Jose del Cabo. Near the Cabo San Lucas airport. Same climate as Cabo San Lucas, but a bit lower key/kid friendly. You can taxi or bus into Cabo San Lucas if you really want the party atmosphere! Very safe both around the hotel area, shopping in stores, and in the downtown area. W...

Re: When does it make sense to start paying down (or off) a low rate mortgage?

Reinforcing what MoonOrb says, I started seriously paying my mortgage down when: - My kids college expenses were pretty much covered. - I started to look forwards to retirement in 5 years or so. I wanted to simplify and lower baseline expenses in retirement, and in fact retired about 6 months after ...

Re: Considering buying a new cell phone- ideas?

I've had a Moto G4 for just over a year now and am very happy with it. It doesn't have all the latest high end features, but has good battery life, seems reasonably rugged, and runs any Android app I've tried OK. Very cost effective phone!
I assume the G5 is an incremental improvement.

The National Park Hoh Rainforest is near there. There are short hikes near the visitors center, and longer hikes up towards Mt Olympus if you're up for something like that. There are also numerous beach hikes a bit north near La Push. The Thanksgiving weather on the Olympic coast can vary alot, and ...

Re: HSA Over contributions 2016

Call the HSA Custodian's customer service phone.
Tell them what the problem is.
They will tell you how to fix it.

I did something similar a couple years ago.
In my case they sent me a "Remove Excess Contribution" form
which I faxed in and the issue was resolved.

HDHP's and HSA's are usually offered as a package. However, there is no requirement for them to be "linked". You can use an independent HDHP insurance plan and HSA account provider. I currently operate this way, since my insurance provider has changed post-retirement, and I like my prior H...

Re: Would you buy a house for your college kid?

My kid went to school in Phoenix starting in 2007. The local Real Estate folks in Phoenix must have had access to parent info for incoming students, as I received multiple "offers" for bargain houses/condos in the Phoenix area. Oh how much money I could save on rent and the profit to be ma...

My wife opened a new credit card some months ago to get the initial kickback. We got it and the teaser period is over. She just got a notice of a change of agreement. We don't need the card and our credit rating is fine but is it beneficial to close it for purposes of our credit rating? What effect...

We've vacationed in the BVI for the last few years with friends (Virgin Gorda) A day trip to Virgin Gorda/the Baths is popular and VERY cool! (Be sure to do the trail through the boulders!) I'm a fan of the Vanguard LifeStrategy funds for starter accounts. They have reasonable asset allocations across several risk profiles. For example, LifeStrategy Growth is an 80/20 fund with 0.15 expense ratio. 3 or 4 years down the road, once you get around $20k, you can split out and control the a...

Re: How is the Class of 2015 retirement folks doing?

I retired at age 60 in Jan, 2015 with a corp buyout that basically covered expenses through the end of 2015. I got most of my 2016 cash from rebalancing from my taxable account during 2015. The last batch of funds were sold in Dec 2015, so I took a little haircut on that piece as the market started ...

Duckie, Regarding question 1, It appears you are still employed by the company sponsoring the 401k. If so, the 401K plan may or may not allow you to move money out. You need to find the 401K plan's "Summary Plan Description" that defines the rules for that plan. It should be available eith...
