Re: 4 Days in Iceland - May 2016

Went to Iceland for 4 days a few years ago. We decided not to rent a car and just took the bus tours, and were very glad we did. They are well done and give you plenty of time at each site. The tour guides all speak English and the ones we had were very entertaining. I think we would have missed out...

Re: Friend will be laid off in a month - what should he do first?

If he has a healthcare flexible spending account then he should look at what the rules are for those when his job ends. In some situations he could lose some of that money. He might also be able to use an entire years worth of flexible spending money and not have to repay the extra back so it could...

Friend will be laid off in a month - what should he do first?

My friend is a contractor at the State Dept and layoffs are beginning there. He has never been laid off before so is not sure what to do financially or to find a new job.

Where should he start?

Thanks!

Re: Need advice on girlfriend debt/finances

I agree with others that you are enabling her. She's living rent-free, not even having to pay for groceries! Wow. What would happen if you asked her to contribute to the household? It would be fair to have her contribute pro rata - she has a much smaller income but should still be contributing in so...

Re: Where do you keep your emergency fund?

Thanks so much for all these suggestions! I have my money sitting in a savings account making like .25, so even 1% is an improvement. I'll check out Ally. I am planning to get a HELOC to use as an emergency fund, but was thinking of doing that at the same time that I get my PMI removed (next January...

Where do you keep your emergency fund?

Mine has been languishing in a savings account for too long.

Any good rates out there that I should take advantage of?

Thanks!

Re: Turned 30! Women's advice for skin care??

Great advice here. Sunscreen, well-formulated skin products, and not smoking will yield big results. Red_uu, what well-formulated skin products are you referring to? Any favorites? I use a prescription retinoid which I think is the same as Retin-A but I'll double check. I'll check out Trader Joe's ...

Re: Turned 30! Women's advice for skin care??

I also use CeraVe and I've found that sometimes the cheaper products are better than the more expensive ones. When I think about what I spent over the years on Proactiv, Clinique, and other products that didn't work, I get frustrated. Drink a lot of water and get enough sleep. Cannot emphasize thes...

Re: Need a will and possibly trust - where do I start?

Depending on advice of attorney(s), if this were my situation, because death(s) are unlikely, I would not spend the time, effort and higher expense of setting up trust(s) now, but leave that expense for after your death (chances are will never happen). In my opinion, your (and the ex's) documents s...

Re: Need a will and possibly trust - where do I start?

OP here, thank you for all your input! Lots to take in.

I will definitely not skimp on seeking good counsel. It sounds like the way to go is to try to coordinate getting a will done with my ex - maybe do at the same time so we know we have both covered all the bases.

Re: Is a prenup always necessary when remarrying?

If you die first, absent an agreement, he would be entitled to a portion of your estate, called the elective share. I found this article on the Virginia elective share written by a trusts and estates lawyer in a large firm in Virginia, which might be useful, though I haven't checked to see whether ...

Re: Is a prenup always necessary when remarrying?

I can't see him ever getting greedy or ugly. Then he should not mind signing a pre-nup, right? Do you think anyone just getting married can envision their partner getting greedy or ugly? You're right - I guess I am just trying to determine whether I need one if the state already says that my pre-ma...

Re: Is a prenup always necessary when remarrying?

Proposing a prenup to your intended can often cause you to receive a frosty reception, but one needs to do what one feels is best. OP here - that is what I am concerned about. He is a family friend and from what I can tell is a very principled person with a lot of integrity. I can't see him ever ge...

Re: Is a prenup always necessary when remarrying?

I am divorced and own a house and some investment accounts. My fiancee doesn't have much in assets (he really got cleaned out in his divorce, but is on a good path). If all my accounts are in my name and my house is also in my name, do I need a prenup? I live in Virginia and it looks like these ass...

Re: Need a will and possibly trust - where do I start?

Thanks for all these great comments. The children are minors, both elementary-school age. Right now all of my IRAs and 401Ks list the kids as beneficiaries - I changed that right after the divorce. If minors are beneficiaries, what happens to the money if something happens to me - does it then go to...

Re: Need a will and possibly trust - where do I start?

Thanks for all your responses.

In a HCOL area, how much would a fairly standard will cost?

I assume that if we establish a trust, my ex and I both just direct funds to it, so only one is needed?

Need a will and possibly trust - where do I start?

Hi, I am divorced and have two kids. I own a house and a number of investments (401Ks and IRAs). So does my ex-husband. Right now neither me nor my ex-husband have wills or any kind of trust to make transferring these assets to the kids' guardian easy if anything happens to us. We have also taken ou...

Teaching kids about money

Hi, I am a single mom raising two kids - seven and eleven. We are doing a "fiscal fast" this month to pay for a vacation later this year. I have been teaching them about wants vs needs and other simple concepts. Any book or website recommendations that might be useful? Thanks!
