Asset Allocation: Where to put future contributions for bonds?

Hi Bogleheads, I am having a lazy three portfolio spread over 401k (all bonds), a Roth-IRA (domestic & international stocks) and a taxable account (domestic & international stocks). My AA is 60/40 for stocks/bonds. Contributions into 401k and Roth-IRA are already maxed out for the year. Ever...

adding Real Estate Index Fund to lazy three portfolio?

Hi Bogleheads, So far I only employ the lazy three fund strategy (Total Market Index, Total International Index and Total US Bond Index). In my employers 401k all of this funds are provided by Fidelity. I use the three fund lazy portfolio for all the good reasons Bogleheads outline (low expense rati...

Hospital Indemnity/Accident/Critical Illness supplements for medical insurance

Hi Bogleheads, my employer offers a decent medical insurance coverage via United Healthcare. For the first time they are also offering now three optional supplemental coverages for Hospital Indemnity, Accident and Critical Illness. Each of this supplements cost roughly $40/month, so $120 in total. T...

what AT&T plan for new iPhone6+S

Hi, I will buy the new iPhone6+S (64GB) and currently looking into different buying options with AT&T (best coverage where I live). I definitely will not go with a 2-year plan - hate those. So the options are either to pay in full with no annual contract ($850) or the AT&T Next Installment p...

HSA via Obamacare if new employer doesn't offer it. Good or bad idea?

Hi Bogleheads, My new employer does not offer a Health Savings Account. So far I have used my current HSA as an additional retirement vehicle, meaning maxing out 401(k), IRA and paying high deductible plan out of pocket. As the health coverage options from my new employer are not very impressive I a...

replicating AA in each account (or not)

Hi Bogleheads, Is there an advantage (or disadvantage) of replicating ones AA in each account (taxable, 401k, Roth-IRA) instead across all accounts? From tax-efficiency side one should hold bonds in tax-sheltered accounts. That has lead to the situation that my 401k is exclusively in bonds. However,...

Rental property purely for tax-saving reasons

Dear Bogleheads What are your thoughts on the following concept? A friend of mine is doing very well financially. Lives in the expensive Bay-Area, has a high income in the IT-industry and owns his $3M house without a mortgage. In his opinion the only way to bring his tax-burden down is via a local r...

How much tilting towards mid/small caps?

Dear Bogleheads, What a fantastic forum this is thanks to it's active members. Thank you very much in advance for providing input to my question: I am holding a simple four fund portfolio (all Vanguard total market index funds for stocks & bonds in both regions domestically and internationally)....

Where to hold international bond funds?

Hi bogleheads,
I appreciate your comments on the following:
Shall I hold the Vanguard Total International Bond Fund in a taxable account because of the foreign tax credit OR in a tax-sheltered account because of the tax-inefficiencies of bond funds?
Thank you very much

Total International Stock Index includes small caps or not?

Can you please help me as I am confused. Does the Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund include small caps or not? According to Vanguards website in Fund Facts the Fund is a "Foreign Large Blend" fund. However, the index it is tracking (FTSE all World ex US) includes small caps. I ...

To refinance or not

Dear Bogleheads, I highly appreciate your thoughts on the following: I have substantial equity in our house. The overall value is roughly $2M. I still owe $275k on a 30-year fixed mortgage at 3,625%. The monthly payment is $3,900. My question is wether I should stay the course for the remaining 7 ye...

Re: advice on personal finance & mortgage

Because my kids are still little I (have) to work another ~15years - I guess.
Vacation home would be primarily for fun and family bonding.
Job is currently at risk and lay-off possible. Finding a new one will most likely come with significant cut.

advice on personal finance & mortgage

Dear Bogleheads, I'm newbie in the forum and highly appreciate some perspectives. Here are my data: married (51 & 42), filing jointly, 2 kids (7 & 4), I'm the single earner for the family, we live in the high-cost Bay-Area, moving to a cheaper place is not an option income ~350k/year, not ve...
