vacation home now or in 2035?

Hi, wife and I are mid-40s but starting to dream a bit about a mountain escape to go to on weekends. One thought is to strike out now, and build some memories up of the place and maybe spend some still-somewhat-youthful energy on fixing one up to be ours. We don't have much time to use it now, but c...

Re: too much money in indexes?

Thanks sschullo, those are great links!

In_reality, I hadn't heard of fundamental indexes. In theory, those could play the role of stock pickers/price setters in my theoretical bizarro-index-only world!

too much money in indexes?

Bogles. I've helped a few friends lately and pointed them to low-cost index funding. I usually get a handful of questions that are pretty simple to explain. But as with most topics, once in the role of teacher your own curiosity expands. So, I've had this looming question of my own that may be silly...

car financing

About to buy my first new car. Used discounts are too small in our category. I feel decent about the car buying process. I've read up on steps involved in that process pretty well. However, I want the 0% manufacturer financing. I sense that even with an agreed upon out the door price on the car I'd ...

auto financing

Bogles, just seeking a final word of wisdom. I'm a big believer in used cars, somewhat immaturely prideful of how old my cars have been. Though I'm now with two kids who are pushing us into the minivan zone and we think we need one to meet life's needs these days - and this is bringing new data to m...

Re: NOT saving for college

Original poster back. Great list of comments and suggestions here. I'm going to give my strategy based on some of the most salient posts for my situation. I’m a non-profit worker (circa 90+K) with a spouse who is staying at home to care for the kids, so we maybe able to benefit from financial aid so...

NOT saving for college

Hi folks, two compelling articles I've come across recently making the argument against emphasizing saving for college. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeff-bogle/college-savings-_b_2672873.html http://www.forbes.com/sites/janetnovack/2011/09/14/another-reason-you-shouldnt-be-saving-for-college/ I'd l...

minivan thing

There was a variation of this discussion in '09, but I thought I'd bring it up for a fresh perspective. My wife and I have a 2-year old, and one in the oven. We currently have a mid-sized SUV and a sedan, both purchased with cash when we were single and had fewer considerations. Both are starting to...

will

Just had my first child born! I have my financially house in order (some credit to that should go to this forum), but the missing piece is the will. I got forms off of a web site USLEGALFORMS, customized for our state and situation (married w/ children). We can easily have two witnesses and a notary...
