Re: Trip to Kona, Hawaii - Suggestions

I was there in 2005 and enjoyed Kapoloa Falls in the Pololu Valley. You'll need to work with a guide, as the trail to the falls passes through private lands.

Re: Why the Low Quantitative Score on the GMAT?

Like you, my undergrad was in engineering (aeronautics and astronautics, in my case). I sat next to an electrical engineer during most of my MBA classes. We used to look at each other in disgust and mutter about how this wasn't 'math' during the accounting and finance sessions, as we were accustomed...

Re: SS tax question on paycheck

I went back and looked at old pay stubs. The amount of increase in net pay was exactly equal to what I had been paying in SS tax. So no additional taxes were withheld.

I found this book to be a good primer for the sorts of issues you are asking about:

A good starting point is:

I like Firecalc:

It shows you how well you'll do based on projected savings and expenses, not based on percentage of salary.

Re: Vanguard could owe billions in back taxes

Whistleblowers can get a share (15-30%) of whatever the government recovers, so of course his lawyers are estimating a huge liability. Might be a very large payday for him.

As OP is divorced, she may have additional options if she was married to her ex for greater than 10 years. This link covers some:

Re: How do I grow my Roth IRA faster than my traditional IRA

I'm not sure if this was mentioned, but you don't have to take out your entire 401k at once upon retirement, you can set your own liabilities by how much you take out in roth vs trad. Take out enough trad ira funds to hit the 10% /15% tax liability mark for that year and then take out Roth after th...

I am in a similar situation for my son (who is a junior in HS). This new book has been helpful to us as we look at his options:

Re: Hate where we live, do we make major changes?

DW and I are considering where we live next as our sons near the end of high school and the start of their lives away from us. A book we have found useful is "The just right home" by Marianne Cusato. Although she is a bit biased towards urban living, she discusses a lot of things to consid...

Re: Proactively replace water heater?

FWIW, I just got an e-mail from a plumber basically encouraging folks to replace before new, higher efficiency (and higher cost) standards go into effect in April. That said, I'd probably want something high efficiency anyways, so the e-mail's rationale is not compelling to me, but at least it made...
