Re: Should I consider a travel Credit Card?

I feel everyone should have a least two credit cards in order to provide a backup in case the primary card does not work. During a trip to Italy on rare occasions my primary VISA card would not be accepted but my backup would be OK. When my wife looked at the credit card statement the following mont...

Re: Why not take Social Security at 62

When I was approaching my 65th B'day I made similar calculations as to whether I should begin SS at 65, 67 or 70. One of the factors I used was ( and I know this sounds kooky) how I would feel if I died prior to my break-even date. Some individuals would feel-"so what I'm dead, it does not matter"; ...

Re: Temperature setting for radiant floor heat

After reading the several responses to my original post it occurred to me that my cellar is also toasty warm. This would mean a lot of heat is being distributed downward as well as upward. The pex tubing does have a thin piece of metal shield to hold the tubing in place as well as to radiate the hea...

Temperature setting for radiant floor heat

My kitchen only had a toe-kick element under the sink cabinet as the source of heat. I found this very inadequate and after some research I opted to install radiant floor heat in my kitchen. My kitchen floor is the old fashion 3/4" oak flooring. It was a semi-DIY project. I purchased all the compone...

Re: Worth changing 40 gal. to 30gal. hot water tank?

As the original author of this post I must admit I have come full circle. As suggested in other postings, I looked at my gas bill for the summer months and noted an average monthly charge for gas supply for HW of around $8. The delivery charge was another $25. At $8 per month for gas supply, any sav...

Tankless Water Heaters

My 2nd floor bathroom sink is quite a distance from the hot water tank in my basement and a lot of water is wasted waiting for hot water. Thinking of getting point of use tankless water heater which would be mounted under the sink cabinet. I have access to both 110v and 220v. Other than price, is th...

Worth changing 40 gal. to 30gal. hot water tank?

Had our home for about 10 years now and I was thinking maybe this is the time to think about installing a new hot water tank. I am guessing the tank is around 12 years old. Water is heated by natural gas. Since it is just myself, wife, clothes washer, and dish washer I was considering swapping to a ...

Need convincing annuities are investment grade

Lot of threads in BH regarding annuities. When I began my career in the early 70's it was common to read about insurance products, particularly variable annuities, that turned out to be a bad investment sold by commission sales people. Since then I have avoided pretty much all investment products of...

Re: Which heart rate monitor is the most accurate?

After a heart attack back in 2015 I researched the heart rate monitors. Like most folks, accuracy was my primary goal. Ended up buying a Polar with chest strap. The wrist bands seemed too prone to error during quick exercise routines. Chest strap is probably too inconvenient for every day wear, but ...

How Best to Clean Inside of Windshield

This is the time of year when sun is low and I seem to get sun glare a lot which can make driving a little scary. Compounding the problem is the inside of my windshield has this film on it which I assume comes from the vinyl cover on the dashboard. I have used Windex type stuff to clean it but it ju...

Re: Investing in index funds at this moment

If you think about it, it is almost never a good time to invest. If market is high, you think "it has to drop soon"; if market is down, you think, "how much further down will it go". Remember, your most difficult investment is usually the next investment.

I posted a similar topic back in July. I have had like 3 batteries in less than five years. But since I retired back...

I am in the market for a new laptop and wondering if I should wait 4 weeks till Black Friday. Realclearmarkets generally deals with finance issues, I.e., govt. spending, tax reform, budget policies. But from this site you ca...
