No longer in a high deductible insurance plan: impact on current HSA

I saw another HSA topic on this board. Rather than hijack their post and take it in a new direction, I decided to begin a new post. I have contributed to an HSA for the last 7 years and have been keeping my receipts, rather than reimbursing myself. I understand that I can reimburse myself for those receipts at any point in the future. I am retiring this year and will have retiree health care benefits paid for until I reach medicare age in 4 years. However, the high deductible plan that I am currently enrolled in is not an option as a retiree. I will move into a much lower deductible plan. I realize that I cannot make contributions to my HSA contributions going forward. Since I am no longer in the high deductible plan, I made the assumption ...

Agreed. It is my core holding in my tax differed accounts. Obviously, Wellesley isn't as diversified as a target date retirement fund, but the higher dividend paying value stocks and corporate bonds "fit" my retirement account. I prefer to hold lower dividend paying growth stocks (think the top 10 holdings in the S&P 500) and index funds in my taxable brokerage account. Good luck making the decision that is right for you.

I got a Fidelity bank account yesterday and tried to associate it with my US Treasury Direct account - I did this by calling hoping to avoid getting locked out of my account. I gave them both the super long 16 digit account number as well as the short version and US Treasury direct said neither would work. They said typically it's an 11-12 digit number, but my Fidelity account number doesn't fit that number limit. How do you figure out which version of your account number to give US Treasury Direct? Has anyone with a Fidelity account done this? I tried calling Fidelity - first they said to use the long number, then the short one, but USTD wouldn't accept either one. Talked with Fidelity again and they said the long and short version of the...

Editing to say that I found this information with a Google search but I have a new question.

1) My I bond that was issued in November 01 2021 with a fixed rate of zero has a current yield of 3.94%
2) My I bond that was issued in January of 2023 with a fixed rate of 0.4% has a current yield of 3.79%

Why does the I bond issued with a fixed rate of zero in 2021 have a higher current yield than the I bond issued in 2023 with a fixed rate of 0.4%?

Non Financial Retirement Challenges

I am curious if others have been challenged in letting go of things (projects, assignments, etc.) in the workplace. While there are work tasks (meetings and HR trainings) I am glad to eliminate in retirement, I have been lead on a project for over 25 years. The person who will be taking it over is competent and I know will do a good job. There is this empty feeling about letting it go. I guess it has become such a huge part of my work identity. Short of seeing a psychologist, do any retired (or soon to be retired) Bogleheads have strategies they have used to "let go" of some projects that really energized them for years/decades?

I was told that Chase Bank only cashes bonds up to $200 value. 4 years ago I was able to easily cash a $5K bond (around $9K value) at my local Wells Fargo branch and the proceeds were deposited into my checking account. Unfortunately, I do not have my checking account at Wells Fargo anymore, and I have more bonds to cash in the coming months. Are there other large banks or Credit unions known to cash savings bonds of higher denomination? I live in the San Francisco Bay area. For the first time, I cashed out 10 I Bonds in 2023. Seven of the bonds were paper bonds and three were electronic I bonds held at Treasury Direct. I am curious if the interest can simply be reported as the sum of all I bonds cashed in 2023? Or, must I identify each I bond (serial numbers for the paper bonds) and the interest earned on per bond as 11 different entries? Obviously I hoping that the sum of all I bonds cashed can simply be entered into Turbo Tax :D

In addition to refunds of ATM fees, I like the fact that checks are free. In fact, Fidelity sent so many checks I will most likely never have to request more. If you have a lot of money in your account, the Fidelity CMA account exceeds the FDIC limit by splitting your monies between multiple banks. As mentioned in a previous comment the interest rate is modest at 2.7%. I have found it to be a good alternative to a checking account.

Are there any potential advantages of maintaining a couple of old, qualified retirement plans as opposed to rolling them to a rollover IRA? In this case, one plan is a 403b at TIAA-CREF, the other, a small, defined benefit pension plan at Fidelity. I don't expect to ever need or want to annuitize the 403b nor to need to take periodic payments from the DB plan. Joint/survivor options are immaterial to us as spouse & I have sufficient funds from other sources. We also don't care that a pension or annuity can continue to pay if we live far beyond normal life expectancy as we don't need that security. We are both retired and below the age of mandatory RMDs. I did submit my paper I bonds for conversion when I found out that the bank that I have been with for 30 years (and the bank I purchased these very same bonds) told me that they no longer redeem I-Bonds. They gave me the address to treasury direct to redeem them, but also suggested that I try a large bank (Chase) and local Federal credit unions. The 2.5i engine on your Legacy has a deserved reputation for head gasket failure , right around ~100k actually :annoyed . Granted this may be more common on Imprezas because they tend to be tuned too aggressively and driven too hard. There have been some excellent pros and cons replies. I just wanted to add another comment. I owned a house and now rent an apartment. It is extremely quiet, no one lives above or below me (there are garages below), and we have a great exercise room, and pool. My rental insurance is ridiculously low (paired with my auto policy). One big advantage is the freedom to travel. I didn't worry about my residence while away and didn't need to hire anyone to take care of the place. For me, renting has given me a great deal of freedom and I would never go back to being a home owner. I wish you the best in making the decision right for you.

I am coming up on the 105,000 mile mark when the drive belt needs replaced (I haven't checked the cost of that yet). I had planned to replace the car (most likely with a new Subaru) this summer. Other than having to add a half quart of oil between the 7500 mile oil changes when the check oil light comes on (and the usual maintenance costs: tires, battery, etc.), it has been a low cost to maintain vehicle and is still mechanically sound. It does have that pesky Subaru quirk of not letting me take the key out of the ignition when shutting the engine off (I found a youtube video to get the key out when that happens). I don't...

I don't understand what an "emergency fund" means. If I needed money, I know how I would pull money from to pay bills. Yet, I don't actually label assets as an "emergency fund." For example, if I needed $20,000 to cover a surgery, I would simply sell something I own (long held stocks in taxable, I-Bonds, cash from checking) to cover the cost. Does that make those things "emergency funds?" I guess I don't get it, yet I am willing to learn if I am missing something in regards to labeling money. Thank you.

Agreed - The US Dollar Index (DXY) was in the low 70s in 2011 (today > 100).

While history doesn't repeat itself, age demographics have played a significant role in the US stock market performance during the early to mid-1900s. I am not a demographer and do not know where the US is in comparison to other countries.

For me to say US or international will do better, is speculation. I don't try to guess what will do better. My choice, my IPS, is 50/50 US/Int'l. Everyone needs to decide what is right for them.

We love it here, the weather is great and we have lots of amenities....tennis, Pickleball, bocce. 2 swimming pools, a cafe, health club, etc. For the most part the residents are upscale, educated individuals. We snowbirded here for a few winters so we were able to 'test' it out.
This is what I desire. A very active 55+ community. Pickleball is my game of choice. I neither want, or desire to pay for, a golf course. Are you on the gulf coast of Florida?

Re: Where on the Vanguard web page is my RMD?

Yes, the new format is a bit confusing. I have RMDs from an inherited IRA. I haven't taken it yet for 2023, but if you start the process for a withdrawal from the IRA (you don't actually have to actually submit the withdrawal unless you want to) it stated the RMD this year and amount that I have taken this year ($0). It may not the the most straightforward method to seeing your RMD, but it worked for me. :sharebeer

Re: The job was okay. The money was nice. But you retired anyway. How did it go?

This is a perfect thread for me as I am grappling with retirement. I have heard so many people talk about not retiring because they don't know what they want to do with their time. I have lived my life in a carefully planned out way (I am not a risk taker by disposition). Obviously, not everything went according to plan, but to make a decision I have always had a plan A and a plan B. So all of the discussion here "fits" me. I have a friend who works in the same line of work in a different state who is still working at 73 and collecting over 4K per month in social security. Her husband died and while she doesn't fill fulfilled at work, it is comfortable. I also have a colleague I work with who is 72 (I don't know how much social se...

Alan S. wrote: Sun Feb 19, 2023 8:38 pm In that case, you should wait for the Regs to be finalized before taking the 2023 RMD in case the IRS backs off the requirement, although the chances of that are slim. And if the IRS still cannot finalize the Regs by late this year, they will be forced to waive any penalties like they have done for 2021 and 2022 beneficiary RMDs for 10 year rule beneficiaries.
Thank you. I do plan to wait until December. I am willing to take the RMD for this year, yet would prefer if we simply were instructed to simply clear out the account in 10 years (regardless of amounts in any given year). Sadly, my father always encouraged us to use the stretch IRA over our lifetimes. However, I know the stretch will never be an option again.

Re: Inherited IRA Rules

It would be a total waste of money to hire a tax advisor. You should be guided by the proposed Secure Act Regs even though they are not yet final. Your RMD conclusions are correct since father clearly passed after his RBD and therefore you are required to take annual life expectancy RMDs using Table I in years 1-9, then drain the account in year 10 (2032). It is pretty simple in your case because more complicating RMD factors do not exist here. I am assuming that you were either the sole named beneficiary or you created your separate inherited IRA or will do so by year end 2023. In addition, this assumes that your father owned the IRA and was not himself an IRA beneficiary. Thank you, Alan S. Your assumptions are correct: (1) It is a separ...

Re: Inherited IRA Rules

I am resurrecting this thread.. I wish to first share my understanding, and then ask two questions. I am planning to take the 2023 RMD from my inherited IRA (from my father who passed in 2022) before December 31st. I have calculated the RMD by dividing the December 31, 2022 IRA total by 27.1 (I turn 60 in October). However, I keep receiving the message that firms will not calculate an RMD for an inherited IRA that are impacted by the SECURE act. Furthermore, they are encouraging people to hire a tax advisor. Honestly, I don't want to hire a tax advisor as this seems straightforward (take out, at minimum, the RMD based on my life expectancy for years 1-9, and be certain to empty out the account by Dec 31st of the 10th year; more than the RMD...

My main concern is earnings risk that is not priced into the market and I do not want to buy at high.
How would you, or anyone, know you are buying at high? If I could be so bold, I think a bigger concern for you is to find the asset allocation that you are comfortable so that you can stick with it. Best to you!

Re: Using HSA monies for insurance premiums

Thank you both for your responses. My original thought was that it would fall under "continuing coverage" (albeit, not COBRA). I completely understand what you are saying about eligible expenses increase as I age. I will let the HSA grow over time. In the meantime, I am saving every receipt for the future. Thanks again.

Using HSA monies for insurance premiums

If a person retires early before they turn 65, are HSA monies eligible to pay insurance premiums. I find various answers to this question online (most say no) and wanted to turn to the Bogleheads for clarity. I read the following on the IRS webpage https://www.irs.gov/publications/p502#en_US_2013_publink1000205029 "Insurance Premiums You can include in medical expenses insurance premiums you pay for policies that cover medical care. You can't include in medical expenses insurance premiums that were paid and for which you are claiming a credit or deduction." Does that infer ACA premiums where people claim a credit are not eligible? I spoke with HR and given my age and years of service, I can stay on my current state insurance plan ...

thinair wrote: Sat Jan 07, 2023 7:49 am Try this: go to Apple Menu > System Settings > Sound. Click the Output button and you should see an option for your TV/HDMI.

Your cable should be plugged in and the TV turned on.

Good luck!
That worked. Thank you!!

MacAir to TV (no sound)

Greetings Bogleheads!

I purchased a USB C to HDMI Adapter 4K Cable to connect my MacAir to my TV. The video works; however, the sound is still coming from my computer and not through the TV. My old MacBook pro had a HDMI port and when I connected them, both video and sound worked on the TV. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
